The Prisoner of Shark Island : Purchace or Rental?
Re: Purchace or Rental?
I just finished watching it Ben and I would say that you should rent it instead of buying it.
Re: Purchace or Rental?
Ok cheers. I'm guessing it's not that good then. Is it even worth renting?
Re: Purchace or Rental?
I just saw it on FOX MOVIES, and it was pretty good. It is worth renting, there are few movies that are worth buying. There couldn't be many extras for a movie that was filmed in 1936. Although I could be wrong. Maybe a historical feature on Dr Mud.
Re: Purchace or Rental?
I recently purchased and watched this movie (the region 2 Masters of Cinema version), and I really enjoyed the film. Definitely worth my purchase. It's said to be one of John Ford's favorite films that he made, if not his favorite. THe special features for this version is an excellently restored transfer, a full-length audio commentary by a Ford expert, a video appreciation film by a film critic, and a very nice 28-page booklet which contains an interview with John Ford plus a number of essays.

Re: Purchace or Rental?
The book "Interviews with Film Directors" by Andrew Sarris includes a 1955 interview with Jean Mitry for "Cahiers du Cinema," translated by Sarris.
John Ford lists "The Prisoner of Shark Island" among his favorite movies.
Mitry: And your Arcs de Triomphe your favorite films what are they?
Ford: "Stagecoach"; "The Long Voyage Home"; "The Informer"; "The Prisoner of Shark Island." Also "The Sun Shines Bright" it's a very simple story, the kind I like.
Mitry: And "My Darling Clementine"?
Ford: Yes, if you like. My children liked it a lot. But I you know.
[Mitry] then asked Ford about Henry Fonda, but [he] gathered from his manner there had been a falling out.
