Law & Order: Special Victims Unit : When are they gonna call it quits?

I loved watching SVU back in the day and also really liked Law and Order/Criminal Intent but it seems like SVU has been hanging on by a thread for a few years now. Maybe their gonna go for a solid 20 years and call it quits, what's that 3 more seasons?

Having actors on a show become producers is a terrible idea. Best example, "Charmed".

They wanted it to be the longest running series of the franchise.so I'm guessing they'll drag it out beyond the bones and ghost until they're doing a Weekend at Bernie's schtick with Hargitay's corpse.

They can't get anyone better, or younger, to stay on full time, so they're adding the usual attention grabbers (AKA; ratings suck so we're bringing in kids, someone minor will die, someone main will be in peril, etc).

If you think about all the cameo appearances, all those actors went on to bigger and better things. Peter Scanavino started with smaller bit parts, I'm fairly certain SVU is his first steady gig. Raul Esparza is still booking shows, Tamara Tunie is still busy with side projects, Ice T has straight up confirmed that SVU is just a paycheck to fund other projects.

Mariska is the only one dragging, ahem, *carrying* the show along because her loyal fans (sadistic bunch) can't wait to see Benson getting beaten again.

According to my research, most career police officers retire or get promoted around the twenty year mark.

Say Benson went straight to the academy wfhen she turned 18. There's about twelve weeks of training, and then she's a beat cop. She's literally the lowest man on the totem pole, especially because you have to be at least 21 to have a gun.

Advancing up to being a level 1 Detective would mean four or five years experience as an officer, plus six months of training, and then passing the exam.

It took a good long while for her to bump up to Sergeant, then a bit quicker to Lieutenant. Probably due to necessity because Cragen retired, but I digress.

Even for a television show, it's quite remarkable and improbable that she'd be allowed to apply for and remain in SVU. Given her family history, her sessions with Dr. Hendrix (recall her being unable to answer, she was at a total loss for words, when asked what she would do without SVU). She's also been kidnapped, assaulted, etcshe's damn near on par with the original pink Power Ranger for being the most kicked around and still sitting pretty on the team.

I remember reading someplace that to become a NYPD cop, you have to have two years of college or be honorably discharged from the military. Also, I think the age requirement is 21, not 18, for the NYPD and most larger police departments.

Agreed about Olivia almost getting raped, Warren loves putting female characters in danger and it is disturbing and unrealistic. Hopefully that won't happen under the new guy but I'm not confident as the new guy seems like Warren 2.0.

Isn't it neat how her PTSD only pops up when it suits her? Kinda reminds me of Firefly, when you could time the ensuing drama to whenever River twitched the right way.

first of allthere is NOTHING about PTSD that is convenient. It does not come and go on a whim. Heavy drinking is oftentimes a result of PTSD. There are many symptoms of it, and there is a very broad range of trauma that causes it. Usually the person reacts when it is triggered by certain events, but that is nowhere near what you say as it coming on at a "convenient" time.
I would love to hear your personal experience with PTSD (seriously, I would. I'm not being scarcastic here).

Because it allows the actress to show powerful performance that the usual police procedural drama doesn't.
Plain and simple.
But I agree, it got boring after a while. Olivia can be challenged in a different way other than putting her in constant kidnapping/hostage situations. For example, give her cancer and let her beat it, but then again some viewers won't like that and say that it's too much personal drama and that the show turned into a soap opera.
You can't please everyone.

I'm an Olivia fan and I don't want to see or at all happy when she gets hurt. I was raped and I wish I had someone like Olivia to talk to back then. I love the character. I think she is really caring. I HATE to see her get hurt when she was almost raped when she was undercover in that jail, I felt sick, that was one of the ways I was raped and I didn't want Olivia to go through that too. I HATED that scene. :(

Kelli seems younger than both of them because she is younger, lol. Quite a bit younger, in fact. She's 18 years younger than Ice and 16 years younger than Mariska.

And I agree; I wish they hadn't written the Noah and Jesse storylines into the show. Worst storylines ever, in my opinion.

Regarding Benson's and Rollins' kids, women have children. It's what we do. We also work. It's mirroring reality to have the female leads have kids.

She's saying it's unrealistic cops that old and have been in SVU that long would remain in SVU. If you're talking realism, it's not realistic for cops to stay in a unit like SVU for so many years. So it's not actually realistic.

I still really enjoy SVU even though it has changed over the last few years. They couldnt just keep doing a procedural cop show forever. sometimes its good to get a little personal with the characters. do they go overboard sometimes? yea but for the most part its still entertaining. honestly, i even find the stuff with Rollins sister good and i know im in the extreme minority on that.

When it comes to things like Benson still being in SVU not being realistic i really don't care. its a tv show not a documentary. it doesnt need to be real.

I could find something likable about the Rollins sisters drama if only Amanda could stop babying her sister. She's got no problem calling out anyone else, yet she's so kidgloved with her own family.

Anyone want to start a betting pool on if/when Kim makes a move on Carisi, lol.

But is it unheard of? If it does happen, it's realistic, technically.

Yes, but this is a sex crimes show. we don't need Noah to be in every storyline. They can say they need to get home to the kids, but we don't need to see them all the time. Is the kid that plays Noah Mariska's real kid? If so, I'm sure in a few years, he'll be taking over the squad for SVU 2.0.

I'm thinking of at least one episode (the one where Olivia is home sick and somebody used her car) and Tucker was yelling at and blaming Olivia and wasn't listening to her which made her have to find out on her own what was going on. I just don't get after getting treated like that by a man and then a few years later dating him? It's like in, I think it was Days Of Our Lives, where a woman was raped by a guy and a few years later she marries him. WHAT?!! I wouldn't want to marry my rapist, but I guess that's just me? What episode was it that Tucker did that? I vaguely remember it but I can't recall which episode it was.

Tucker may have overstepped his bounds but SVU has done that numerous times, Stabler and Benson lied and overstepped bounds and broke so many rules it is amazing.

Is that comparison absurd? Yes. But you started attacking this poster before they made that comparison. All they said was they didn't like them together and you said they either were an Elliot and Olivia shipper or they think Olivia's a lesbian. Just because they don't like Tucker.

You know who you're like? Nancy, when she defends Cassidy.

And it's the episode when they discover a company smuggling cocaine in baby formula. Elliot goes undercover in it. I think it's season 6. They went to question someone, Tucker showed up and lied to them saying Cragen gave him the okay, when Cragen was completely cluless. Then he let the suspect go without Olivia or Elliot talking to him and he was killed before they could get back to him.

Yeah that was season 4 episode Risk where Tucker did that. Yeah Tucker screwed up in that one but Benson and Stabler have done the same thing numerous times, they have screwed up, lied to their boss, and gotten more than 1 innocent person locked up or killed indirectly. So while Tucker has made mistakes, he has never been a bad guy and was always doing his job when he investigated Stabler or Olivia. The Stabler lovers always act like Tucker was some kind of arch enemy and terrible person and that Olivia is being disloyal to Stabler by dating Tucker and it pissed me off. Stabler doesn't deserve Olivia's loyalty, he retired without telling her and they haven't spoken in over 5 years, Stabler was never meant to be with Olivia and he wasn't a good influence on Olivia. He took up a ton of Olivia's life and she has been much happier since he left.

Most people like Benson and Tucker together. The ones who don't are usually the delusional Stabler fans who act like Stabler was some great guy who has been wronged by everyone. Stabler made his own bed, he quit, never told Benson and hasn't contacted her since. Stabler was a sorry human being and held Olivia back.

Comparing Olivia dating Tucker to a woman dating her rapist is stupid.
