Dance with a Stranger : watching the dvd, film tries too hard to make us feel sorry for Ruth?
Re: watching the dvd, film tries too hard to make us feel sorry for Ruth?
When I looked into some of the facts behind the case, I realized that the movie intentionally left out some things that could have made Ruth more sympathetic. For instance, Blakely really beat her very badly, instead of just "hitting" her once in a while as in the movie, and she even said that her miscarriage probably was caused by him punching her in the stomach. And also it turned out that Desmond was more of an accomplice to the murder than depicted he actually gave Ruth the gun and drove her to the pub where she shot Blakely. But it's true that in photos, the real Ruth Ellis appears much harder and much less attractive than she was in the film.

Watching it again I am struck that the film tries really hard to get us to feel sorry for Ruth.
I don't feel much sympathy for her,she was badly treated by the men in her life but she made bad choices.
Watching the film makes me want to have a flat in Dolphin Square however.
