Curse of the Golden Flower : Excellent movie, I don't understand the hate

Excellent movie, I don't understand the hate

This is one of the best movies I have seen in years. While Hero and House of the Flying Daggers were visually stunning movies, they were kind of stupid plot-wise. Hero was mostly pro China-Unification propaganda, House of Flying Daggers is just a series of plot twists, each one more unbelievable than the last. This movie has the visual splendor of the two previous films but, but this time based on a very solid play by Cao Yu, one of the best Chinese playwrights of the 20th century. It has all the feeling of a Shakespearean tragedy. I seriously don't see why people like Hero and House of Flying Daggers better than this.

Re: Excellent movie, I don't understand the hate

My sentiments exactly! It also teaches a lot about Chinese culture. I own the film and I wish there were similar films about the Forbidden City. They'd be expensive too, though!

Re: Excellent movie, I don't understand the hate

viewers prefer hero and house of flying daggers *because* they are more positive and romantic, whereas curse of the golden flower is extremely black hearted and nihilistic.

I don't think there's any hate for it, it's just a stupid movie. Black ninja like warriors zip lining to attack some riders in the middle of a canyon? Are you real?

The secret guards hiding in the ceiling.

Shots of breasts in the opening sequence.

The huge battle at the end where were they staging those soldiers? Where was all the support equipment and personnel?

It wanted to be a "real movie" but was dumbed down so many shades that it was hard to take it seriously on any level.

I felt like I was watching a train wreck in slow motion as I watched one poorly directed scene after another.
