Cinderella Man : Renée Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

Renée Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

Rene Zellweger is a fine actress. She did this film after she won the Academy Award for Cold Mountain. This movie was an expensive film and it was risky because it is a period piece. The films main auidence would be Adult Males over 30 and they don't buy many movie tickets. In order to have a better box office bet Ron Howard cast Rene Zellweger because she was a "NAME" that could bring in younger females.

Well if you watch the film Rene Zellweger scenes slowss down the film. Lots of Her scenes should of been shorter or elimanted. Her part doesn't drive the story! Have they cast someone else or cut down on Rene Zellweger the film would of been much better. I like the film but a better film could of been made.

Re: Renée Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

Although I am not a fan of Renee Zellweger but I thought she did a goog job in this film and that the love between her and Russel Crowe was very believable.

Re: Renée Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

I thought her acting was fine, though she sounded like Marge Simpson in her more anguished moments.
Her character did seem to get through the Great Depression without losing her rosy plumpness. Hollywood doesn't have many actors who can do 'gaunt' : Christian Bale, Rooney Mara, Keira Knightley with some make-up alterations. That's all I can think of. Strange really, as various forms of hardship are a hollywood staple.

Re: Renée Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

Should have been Marcia Gay Harden in the lead role! That would have made this a more memorable movie. Probably would have garnered some Oscar considerations!

Re: Renée Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

I agree with stanleybix-1, that's a good shout, Marcia is twice the actress Rene is imo. I've never understood the love for Rene, I find her very overrated. She always seems to have the same pained expression in everything she's in.

Re: Renufffde Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

The love that doesnt exist? odd.gif I had no idea what a good actor she was before this. She is sadly underrated but fools will never stop childishly obsessing over her supposedly weird expression(s).

And really? She has small eyes. A bit hard to have a ton of emotions with them. But don't see you complaining about Russell's either. roll.gif No, just complain about the female actor.

We're collecting dust, but our love's enough.

Re: Renufffde Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

The film padded out the part of the wife so they could cast a well-known female. Her acting was fine its just more then 1/2 of her scenes should of been eliminated. The film could of been 30 shorter and leave a bigger emotional impact on those who saw it in theaters.

The films unnecessary scenes hindered all award prospects

Re: Ren?e Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

Yeah all that pesky family stuff and motivation for the protagonist. If you just want to watch a bunch if fake boxing and training scenes go watch Rockyoh waityeah the whole Adrian thing might kill that for you too.

And who gives a flying *beep* whether it won an Oscar almost 10 years ago? The oscars are *beep*

And Renee did a fine job in her role. Like others said, this was the first performance of hers I liked.

Re: Renufffde Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

His wife and family are a major part of Braddock's story. Her fear for his safety, love for him, and strength during the depression are what motivated him. You'll notice in the epilogue that they stayed married, Jim turned out to be a successful (not rich or famous) human being and lived a meaningful, authentic life. She is a major part of his life and without her, the story means less.

Re: Renufffde Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

Exactly. He fought for his family, not himself. It was not about his ego. Just like the soldiers in WWII really fought for their buddies in the end. Human connections, love, loyalty and protectiveness? That motivates a lot of physical strength and courage.

Re: Renufffde Zellweger Casting was a major screw up.

I don't think Marcia Gay Harden would have done much with the role, either.

The character of Mae only has about four or five significant scenes during the movie. Zellwegger did OK, not spectacular, but not bad either.
