It's meant to be that way. The purpose o the film is to take you through all of the glorious highs of the mob life and then take you on a sharp turn downhill as Henry's life devolved into cocaine driven chaos, the final act is edited in a way that leaves the viewer feeling very uneasy, which contributes to the sense that the characters have 'overstayed their welcome.'
