Mysterious Skin : great films you never want to watch again

great films you never want to watch again

mysterious skin
requiem for a dream
life of david gale - more f_d up than i expected
basketball diarees

snow angels - great acting but otherwise now watching again anyways
butterfly effect - creative, but otherwise now worth the disturbingness

my friend sais american history x, but i could watch that a few times, the performance was so exilerating, and anger to me is easier to watch than depression

candy is another disturbing film that carried enough poetic beauty to watch again

havn't seen united or irreversable yet

Re: great films you never want to watch again

I can see your point, but I just saw Skin and own Requiem on DVD, and I have to say while disturbing, and hard to watch without emotional overflow, they're very important as cinematic experiences, in that they force the viewer to actively watch (ie: feel, think, respond) rather than passively consume like your typical Hollywood flick would do. Other, less unsettling films do this too, but these, at least personally, work as a reality check, grounding my frame of mind, and alerting me to what a jewel my life really is, and that my little problems really do pale in comparison. So, regular viewing isn't necessary, but one movie like these, maybe once a year is a good idea to remind a person how f_cked up life is, but at the same time, can and do contain glimmers of light in the darkness.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

i totally agree. my own life moves quick enough that i actually often only see films i'd only watch once or twice. movies like these i absorb, or rather let them absorb me, for everything theyre worth, and that affects me enough that i don't actually NEED to watch it again, for many of these films are so graphic and intense, necessarily so, that to view continuously would be irresponsable

you write well btw

Re: great films you never want to watch again

I definitely agree with Mysterious Skin, and after Requiem I was crying for at least half an hour after.

Candy, while it was depressing, I wouldn't mind seeing it again just because it was beautiful and Heath is in it.

For me its The Pianist or actually any Holocaust movie for that matter. Anytime we talk about it in classes, I get extremely depressed for the rest of the week.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Try watching "Grave of the Fireflies".

Enjoy.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Grave Of The Fireflies really didn't affect me at all
I guess I just don't like kids

-We've survived yet again-
-We've lost yet again-

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Wow, I've never heard anyone say they weren't affected in some way by "Grave of the Fireflies" :O

To each their own :)

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Aw man. I cried like a baby.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Snow Angels, United and Candy I haven't seen (unless you mean Hard Candy??), but the other movies I'd definitely watch again. They're really powerful.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

If you liked those movies you should try My Own Private Idaho. It is one of the best.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

arpalermo: "Aw man. I cried like a baby." (about Hotaru no haka).

Indeed. Me, too but I'm too proud to admit it. But this movie devastated me for a week after. Never thought a movie could do that for me. However beautiful and touching it might be, I am not sure I want to watch it again.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

me too

Re: great films you never want to watch again

grave of the fireflies tops the list. i was devastated..........

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Yeah, that one's wrist-slashingly depressing! An amzing film, but sad! Oh so sad!

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Gaspar Noe's "Irréversible". It's a great, powerful film that I don't think I could ever sit through again. It's very raw & emotionally draining. But definetly worth watching, even if it's only one time.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

i'll have to agree with lindsaym41

"irreversible" is the only movie i know i will never watch again.
don't get me wrong it's an awesome movie but it's emotionally too draining

Re: great films you never want to watch again

it would probably have to be mysterious skin and kids.

i saw mysterious skin once and i decided once was enough. the movie was too disturbing for me.

kids, i saw it online and the whole movie i was cringing.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

has anyone seen L.I.E?

I'm not the sort of person who says 'i'll only watch that once' i'm too into films to ever say that (unless its a 'i'll only watch it once because it is so aweful' like that piece of crap hostel)

Anyway, even so, i feel this movie would probably be one that you guys would see as a single viewing kinda film

Jamie Bell! :) <3
...That Is All.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Yeah, I loved Mysterious Skin, but I don't want to watch it again. For some reason, I couldn't watch The Lovely Bones again. I have had Irreversible sitting next to my bed for months but I can't bring myself to watch it.

You know what the best thing is? I'm not hooked.. I could stop at any time.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Really? Trainspotting is on my list of movies I will watch over and over again. The amount of times I've seen it is already in the teens. I just love it so much, and want to share it with everybody.
I think it's just a very dark comedy. There is happiness in it, even with all the terrible things.

Requiem for a Dream on the other hand, I completely agree. That movie is soul suckingly depressing. I made the mistake of watching it again with friends, not remembering how incredibly devoid of any semblance of happiness it was. That was such a mistake, and I think I was more affected then any one else. It's just such a incredibly depressing movie. Nothing good happens, and at the end of it all, everyone is just *beep*

I don't know if I'm in agreement about Mysterious Skin, because I did just re-watch it. But that was the first time I had re-watched it in years, so I'm going to go with the fact that it sort of affected me enough not to want to see it for awhile.

For me, Pan's Labyrinth is a movie to go on the list. It was beautifully done, but I was just so disturbed and horrified that I don't think I can ever watch it again.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Martyrs.
Requiem For A Dream. (I will watch it again, but not any time soon)
Irreversible.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Oh man watching Martyrs more than once is like asking for dying, tooo strong, violent, disturbing, unbelievable I dont know, short of words for that movie.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Don't think I want to see Antichrist again any time soon.

If you like genital mutilation and talking foxes this films for you!

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Ereserhead. Great movie, but I wouldn't EVER want to watch it again. Agreed on Grave of the fireflies. I didn't cry but it bummed me out majorly.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Irreversible I could never watch again, same with Antichrist.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Sophie's Choice. I watched it about 15 years ago, and have never watched it since. I just can't bring myself to do it.

I like pigs. Dogs look up to you, cats down on you. Pigs treat you as equals.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

The woodsman

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Antarctica
City lights

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Watch Shank the gay movie. Soo sad

GO MICHAEL PHELPS!!

Re: great films you never want to watch again

AntiChrist
Requiem for a Dream
The Woodsman
Martyrs

I do believe that every one of these films should be viewed at least once, because they each offer a very unique viewing experience, but all share one common trait: your soul will feel like it's been shredded.

You tore off one of my chests!

Re: great films you never want to watch again

This and 'Leaving Las Vegas' I have actually seen the latter multiple times, but have no desire to watch it again EVER.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

I will not watch 'Irreversible' or 'Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom' again. I thought both films were well-made, and I actually recommend Irreversible to my friends with edgier cinematic tastes. 'Salo,' however, maintains such an air of discomfort, tension, and general unpleasantness that I really can't recommend it to anyone. But if you've heard of it and are curious, by all means dive in. Just make sure you get the double-disc Criterion edition---the second disc is very illuminating.

When I first saw 'Precious' it bothered me so greatly I couldn't sleep the night I saw it and was sure I wouldn't see it again. Took 3 months but I did see it again and it's now one of my favorites.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

No one could talk into me into rewatching 'Irreversible'. A friend of mine I was watching it with starting shaking during the rape scene. I understand the point of the movie and I think it's clever but at the same time I think it's hostile towards the audience and ultimately unenlightening. The message is far from subtle and even rather stupid. "Time ruins everything" (or something like that) it declares, stating the message blatantly for those who might have missed it. This is the equivalent of saying *beep* the world'. Sorry to rant but I really disliked that movie.

'Salo' also scarred me but I don't feel that it is hostile towards the audience. Rather I think it's a very sincere expression of frustration with mankind's capacity for evil and the commodification of the human body. It's a tough one to recommend but it certainly leaves an impact.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Here are a few to twist the soul and darken the mind. But FIRST...

Seek forgiveness from your perspective God(s) for what you are about to do... Watch and enjoy... Then seek forgiveness again!

Though OOP, I HIGHLY suggest you find them!

1) Reflecting Skins
2) Closet Land (***DO NOT... I REPEAT, DO NOT look up info on Closet Land, just find it and watch it!!!)

Other soul twisters:

3) Tidelands
4) Subcutaneous Cruelty
5) Devils Backbone
6) Session 9

And for some HARD CORE:

7) Storm Warning

*** I will again reiterate, do not look up the details of Closet Land for it will only go to spoil the very essence of what makes the movie!!! I am NOT kidding with this!!!

There are some Bertolucci films I enjoyed but don't really have any desire to watch again.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Requiem for a Dream
Watched it once & was crying as well as speechless for the rest of the evening.

Ken Park
I have it on my computer and I cannot bring myself to watch it again.

Irreversible
Brother let me borrow it and once is definitely enough for me.

Garden of the Night
Far too depressing for me to ever watch again.

Leaving Las Vegas
Mystic River

Re: great films you never want to watch again

i was hoping closet land would end faster so i could go to bed....

Re: great films you never want to watch again

If any, the only films I wouldn't want to watch again for a while are Idi I Smotri and The Gateway Meat.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Brokeback Mountain
Not for the main reason a lot of other people wouldn't watch it in the first place.
The scene where Ennis is seeing in his mind what might have really happened to Jack was a disturbing scene for me.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

I watched A.I. and it made me cry, and yet for the same reason that I had watched it repeatedly even in a relatively short period of time, so I don't understand why everyone avoids the 'emotionally draining' movies.

As for me its Mulholland Dr.. I had enough with the confusion and decided to settle for a rather vague personal interpretation.

Hark

Re: great films you never want to watch again

No one is going to say "Boys Don't Cry"? Mysterious Skin, yes. Requiem, yes. But this is the only film I KNOW I can't see again. Things get to intense for me by the end.

~That girl thinks she's the queen of the neighborhood
I got news for you, she is!

Re: great films you never want to watch again

Well i could NEVER watch The Boys of St. Vincent or Song for a Raggy Boy again.

I would like to see OLDBOY again but i can't get myself to do so.

I like to watch intense films again...to get them out of my sistem. Otherwise they stay in my head for months...

This shark, swallow you whole.

Re: great films you never want to watch again

The Stoning of Soraya M
An American Crime

Re: great films you never want to watch again

This is a great thread

Re: great films you never want to watch again

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was absolutely traumatizing. I felt sick to my stomach after. I don't think I could handle watching that movie again, not that I would need to as it left such a strong impression.

It is definitely a must see, but I think you would have to be completely desensitized to not be affected by it.
