Requiem for a Dream : end scene with Harry Spoiler

end scene with Harry Spoiler

In the end when Harry wakes up after his operation and gets all upset saying that Marion won't come..is it because now he's an amputee and therefore deemed inadequate for her?

Re: end scene with Harry Spoiler

I think he knew she was going to see Big Tim and she didn't need him anymore. He knew at that point all she wanted was the drugs and not him. And he kept promising her everything was going to be ok and he failed her. Which is why the last thing he said to her was "I'm sorry" and she said "I know" and hung up on him and left for Big Tim's. After the amputee, he knew she wouldn't come because she got what surpassed everything else.. Her fix. Notice her creepy smile after cradling her bag of dope? That's all she wanted now and Harry knew that.

Re: end scene with Harry Spoiler

You made a good point. I did notice her smile in the end..she was the only one out of all 4 of them that continues to her fix

I know it's been a long time since you posted this, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents. Yes, I think he was devastated about Marion, but I think it was more than that. When you think about what he, Ty and Marion went through over the last six months - starting out with a dream and a possible way to realize that dream - and ending up having your arm amputated, your best friend is in jail and your girlfriend has left you for prostitution and drugs...

I think the magnitude of it all, and the hopelessness of it all, made him cry.

Re: end scene with Harry Spoiler

Wow, I guess I always thought that Harry was going to die and that's why Marion couldn't / wouldn't come. I realize that (in the end) the drugs were more important than their relationship to Marion- but when the prison nurse said that Marion would be notified and be sent for, I thought it was an empty prison promise because the nurse knew he would die from the infection that spread from his arm. Hospitals may send for visitors but not a prison. Why play along unless Harry was going to die and she was trying to soothe him with false promises. Just my interpretation.

Your interpretation could be right. Now I'm curious. I read the book - I should look at the ending again and see how Selby described it.
