"Stick with me, baby, and you'll be fartin' thru silk."

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

I say 'soda' but I admit I get a kick out of the chance to ask "Can I get a can of soda pop?"

It just sounds so....rural~ly retro! 😀

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

When I was a child I said pop, as an adult I say soda.

I love these lyrics out of the song 'Washing Machine' by 'Sonic Youth':

"Yeah, I take my baby down to the corner and"
"I buy him a soda-pop"
"`cause he's so neat, sweet"

I guess I'm "rural~ly retro," because I always say "soda pop."

I'm from Michigan. We drink POP here! :)

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

I say "soft drink." A "soda," to me, is ice cream with carbonated water and a little flavoring. "Pop," just doesn't seem to be popular, in this area.

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

I'll say "soda," but more often than not, I say "Coke" because it's my preferred soda.

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

yep, same here.

Here in the Deep South we say soft drink or cold drink.

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

Soft drink same in New England, where pop is non-existent if not a family member. Years ago the standard "regionalism" for soda was "tonic", but it's fallen way out of favor. It's old New England, and in my family, no newbies to the region, I have never heard that word used to describe a carbonated beverage. Once common, tonic wasn't always used for soda. Me, I prefer soft drinks. Go figure. 🤓

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

Soft drink for me, too, and in New England, where it's become more common in recent years. Years ago, it was nearly always tonic.

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

I say soft drink.

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

If you walk into a convenience store in some parts of Southern Mo. and see
somebody walk up to the counter with a soft drink from the cooler you might
here the cashier say.............
"One ass code sodie.....*punch-punch-punch ...ching!*...... with tax that'll be 69¢ please".

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

I always call it soft-drink. Though sometimes by its brand name like coke or sprite.

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

I say "pop" (because you popped the top of a can or bottle...or the name of the individual soft drink....aka: "COKE", PEPSI, SCHWEPPES, NEHI or whatever. A "Soda" had ice cream, flavouring, sometimes fruit, soda water or pop, and "ruffles"....aka whipped cream.

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

Where and when I grew up it was most definitely Pop! Pretty much everywhere I've lived after college it was/is soda, and I've been corrupted into calling it "Soda".

Now I don't drink "pop" or "soda", unless there are no other options.

soda

Simply me.

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

"Coke"

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

I say "Soder"

ending it with an A reminds me too much of when people turn "mother f--ker" into "Mutha f--ka" and other words ending in er with an a sound

And that annoys me

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

In the Kansas City area, I hear 'pop,' 'soda,' and 'coke' used pretty much interchangeably. I usually refer to any carbonated non-alcoholic beverage as 'pop.'

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

Re: do you say 'pop' or 'soda'?

Soda.

In my state, the people are ignorant and call all soft drinks "coke." Whether it comes from a can, bottle, or fountain. Be it diet root beer, Big Red, etc. Restaurant workers go into a tizzy when I ask them "what cola do have?"

Nothin' wrong with calling it Pop.
