The Evil Dead : did this freak you out? disturb you to the point of being petrified?
Re: did this freak you out? disturb you to the point of being petrified?
No
Re: did this freak you out? disturb you to the point of being petrified?
I thought it was a scary flick when I first watched it back in the 80s. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre had a similar effect on me. Both films are "harrowing, terrifying, terrorizing, ferocious, creepy, primal, eerie" and raw af. A feeling of isolation, abandonment and doom is prevalent in both films. The woods can be a damn creepy place.
Re: did this freak you out? disturb you to the point of being petrified?
see i love that you whole heartily and fully agree with me about the evil dead. THIS IS THE HORROR FILM! i mean there is no horror film that compares to it's urgency and immediacy of you watching it and being affected by it. it is a transcendent and highly psychologically affecting film.
and i actually compared the evil dead with the texas chainsaw massacre on here as far as it's gritty, ultra realistic look and feel and quality. both films benefit hugely from their super low budgets bc out of necessity or maybe from design (maybe sam thought the evil dead would be more real ad affecting if it looked dark and grainy).
the evil dead's impact is made greater by how it looks and sounds and feels, it's atmosphere. these aspects get heightened and increased by the film stock quality used. as with the texas chainsaw massacre looks ad feels real bc of it's low film stock quality.
the evil dead is spooky and dread inducing and what a grueling film to endure. it is at the top of the list of the hardest films to get through it is an endurance test. do you have mental fortitude to watch all of it?
but you didn't answer my questions. did it freak you out? did it disturb you to the point of being petrified?
but it's more than just the woods being a scary place bc it also has a demon and possession which are both really scary things bc they both are real.

I think what spooked you were The Deadites.
But Deadites in subsequent Evil Dead films are a whole lot more evil and disgusting. This movie is tame by comparison.

do you have mental fortitude to watch all of it?
Yes, of course.
did it freak you out?
Yes, the first time I watched it. Same with TCM.
did it disturb you to the point of being petrified?
I don't know about that but I probably slept with my lights on for a few nights just thinking about the film. The Shining made me sleep with the lights on for almost a month after seeing it (mind you, I was only eleven years old at the time!)…I kept thinking the two little Grady girls were going to visit me in my bedroom.
it also has a demon and possession which are both really scary things bc they both are real.
As a Catholic, I was taught that those things were real, so demonic possession films scared me more than anything. I couldn't make it through The Exorcist the first time I tried to watch it.

I think TCM beats Evil Dead tbh.
Re: did this freak you out? disturb you to the point of being petrified?
Did the TCM terrify you?

No. It was more like, I could feel the terror, and horror and from the victim's point of view.
I didn't feel like that watching Evil Dead.

I agree.

You know which movie had that same effect you had while watching Evil Dead? Oculus.
Have you seen Oculus yet? There's demon possession in that film as well.

Re: did this freak you out? disturb you to the point of being petrified?
No! But I did find it scary on first cinema viewing and while the sfx makeup were cheesy, they were inventive, creative, original and effective for the time.
I also don't feel this film was made with the intention of being perceived as horror/comedy either.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?

it is the most harrowing, terrifying, terrorizing, ferocious, creepy, primal, eerie film i have ever watched. and i still haven't watched a film as all consuming, internal, over powering emotionally, nerve shattering in my life.
i can still remember the moment at the very end when the turntable plays this old fashioned '20s sounding song in this overpowering disturbing atmosphere in otherwise total silence and being the most scared, disturbed and petrified i've ever been while watching a movie. and being paralyzed in fear not being able to move bc my body was in high alert protection mode.
