Deep Blue Sea : Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

Refering to the scene where she is eaten:

When Susan pulls on the ladder rail and it comes off, she goes under water. The shark appraoches her and she slives her hand across her neck and waves it back.

Why is this?
Is it some kind of shark language or what...

If you don't remember, here is her getting eaten:

Thank god someone just uploaded that clip on it's own, it's like less than a minute long.

I think this may be recorded from the video because normally you can see up to her chest when the camera is on her but in this clip you can't...

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

That's what I was wondering to.

nothing going, going, wild in you, you know
i don't do sadness. not even a little bit

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

i think she was telling them to cut

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

Yeah calling cut is my guess as well. But keep in mind it could be related to the alternate ending somehow.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

I'm not sure why either. I was just glad to see her character die horribly. I'm so tired of movie endings where the chick is the only one (or one of the only ones) left at the end, not because she had what it took to survive, but because all the men died trying to protect her. All this chivalry crap in films needs to be omitted from now on. Chicks these days *believe* they're so self sufficient, so I believe it should be reflected action/horror films. And if there's any realism at all in the film, they'll be off'd in the first 10-20 minutes. Hopefully before their obligatory nude scene.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

I felt sorry for her. That was such a brutal way to die.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

That's the "kill" gesture, meaning "stop". I'm not 100% sure why the director put that in there. Maybe her character panicked and for some reason decided to tell the shark to stop as if it was a human.

The shark's like "okay... NOW YOU DIE"!!!

wow! what did your mom do to you?!

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

I think it is an editing mistake, the scene looks to have over-run by a few seconds on the front facing shot. That motion she gives appears to be saying cut, probably due to needed more air from the underwater air line etc

When you talk to God it’s called prayer...when God talks to you it’s called schizophrenia...

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

I doubt that. I took a diving lesson not long ago and I happened to ask the instructor what it meant.
He said he wasn't aware of the action that Susan took (I imitated it) but when one is under water and needs air and has to signal someone they do a sharp, straight, slow cut across the next.
Susan waved hers. I think it must be a "kill" gesture as said above.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

I thought she was crossing herself, in a religious gesture since she knew she was going to die.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

I always presumed she was trying, and failing obviously, to copy what she saw Carter do the Gen 2 shark at the beginning when he took the license plate out and then he also does to the big mama after its eaten Susan.. I remember her saying something to him earlier in the film like, "One day you're gonna have to show me how you do that,"

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

I thought it was an editing mistake too. If it was supposed to be in there, maybe she was signaling to Carter to stop coming for her since she realized she was going to die and saw that the shark was noticing him.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

Did they even re-shoot this? I am sure they used the shot of her before they were swimming out of the facility, right?

''If the apocalypse comes, beep me.''

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

The hand across the throat is a standard signal in scuba diving for "I'm out of air, help me". She was looking at and signaling her safety diver to tell him she was in trouble, and for whatever reason (poor editing) they left it in.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

I think she tried to communicate with the shark since it had superhuman intelligence, as if trying to tell him to stop his attack.
Because in the next scene, the shark pauses for a split-second as if observing her, tilting his head to the right as if saying "now u don't" and then attacking and devouring her.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

Superhuman intelligence? NO, they were very smart for animals, but still not quite on par with humans. Susan herself even said it when she decided to use herself as bait, "she may be the smartest animal on Earth, but she's still just an animal."

Also, the shark paused because it was waiting for Carter to jump in the water. It wasn't observing her, it could hear Carter running to save her, which is why it waited for Carter to dive in before killing Susan, so that this way it could kill Carter as well.

Re: Why does Susan wave her hand past her neck?

Thought she was trying to communicate with the Shark.
