Re: Poll: Which scene is the show's most iconic?

I voted for the chocolate factory scene as most iconic, even if Lucy and her Vitameatavegamin is funnier for me.

The grape stomping scene never was funny for me, but it is a classic bit and Miss Ball herself cited the episode as her number one favorite.

If there's another scene that you think rivals these four in terms of classic status, I'd love to hear which one!

The funniest lady to EVER grace the small screen and perhaps even out of cinema too. A rare breed and one of a kind.

I find all of those funny and I love the William Holden episode in its entirety. He seems like a good sport and what an actor and what a looker. 🔥 I've only see mostly snippets of Lucy's shows over the past decades, as only watched on t.v. as a wee lad and barely recall.

I think though the chocolate one would be the most iconic and even relatable. A simple gag that was milked for all it was worth.

I wasn't a fan of the two later shows all that much, but ILL is AMAZING comedy. The four characters had such wonderful chemistry and the writers wrote beautiful funny dialogue.

Ball's comic timing was uncanny. I watch her get drunk and her hilarious reactions are so fresh it's almost hard to fathom how she did it. Maybe she really knew how to work her face. I don't know. She was extremely self-confident in what she did. She has zero apprehensions. Even when she is speaking dialogue that is maybe not all that funny in itself, she does wonders. Her capacity for humor with her Lucy Ricardo character is actually fascinating. I really have never seen anybody be funny in the way that she was. Of course, Pat Ast is my number one funny gal forever and always, but Ast was a very funny person in real life. Ball was not a funny person in real life, and it is remarkable how she did what she did. How she channeled her child like side or something. The psychological term is called sublimation. Lucille Ball had it.

I agree. William Holden is very nice to look at here.

Re: Poll: Which scene is the show's most iconic?

From my era, it was Here's Lucy that used to play a lot on t.v. when I was a kid in UK. I wasn't aware of all the previous t.v. episodes she had. NZ only had one t.v. channel and then 2 in the 70's and with all the other contemporary t.v. shows, they didn't have broadcasting time and space to play older ones.

You Tube allowed me to watch some older series episdoes and I did see many vhs tapes around selling box-sets of the ILL.

I have seen several of the Lucy/Desi comedy hour specials which I did enjoy on YT.

There is a movie recently made about Ball and Desi with Kidman and Bardem Being The Ricardos. I don't know much about their personal life, but with Ball, although it perhaps could be considered a one trick pony with her Lucy character, her talent at comic timing and facial expressions still managed to retain freshness for the most part.

There's a whole book in what you wrote. Yes. Lucille Ball was good at one thing, i.e., "Lucy Ricardo", and at that one thing, she was the best there was. Second place breathed on her fumes.

And, even at this, I have long thought that on the original ILL, Ball's freshness (and that's the best word I can think of to describe what she could do), lasted exactly 3.5 seasons, with her comic highpoint taking place during the show's second season (kind of like how Kate Jackson's freshness on CA also came during the 2nd season! Never forget Sabrina!) It didn't hurt that Ball herself was pregnant and the baby fat showed up in her face and gave her this childlike cuteness that was irresistible. The show was an immediate hit. The first season sometimes had this slapstick/vaudeville thing going on that I wasn't all that big a fan of. But the second and third seasons had almost weak episodes. The first half of the 4th season starts out great, with the hilarious "The Business Manager". The 4th season stayed great all the way up to one of my favorite episodes, "Ethel's Birthday".

Then, the producers and Ball herself fed off the show's popularity and they went to Hollywood and Lucy Ricrado became less of a great character and more of a commodity. The show was too aware of the character's appeal and exploited that and, imo, Lucy Ricardo became just a little ridiculous. And though I am a fan of the first of the Hollywood episodes, "L.A. at Last", the John Wayne stuff, and Richard Widmark and Harpo Marx, etc. were all a bit much. This element just got more and more dominant. And the Europe episodes are for the most part a bit stale, at least for me. I did like the episode where Lucy pretends to go on a starvation diet.

Vitameatavegamin for me. Take after take, and her face!!! Love it!

Re: Poll: Which scene is the show's most iconic?

I couldn't agree more. I do think the chocolate factory bit may be a bit more iconic, just a bit. But from the moment Lucy takes her first "spoonful", the look on her face makes this bit maybe the funniest one on the entire show. Just hysterical!
