The Running Man : Was the premise prophetic?

Was the premise prophetic?

2017 is just around the corner. So were the makers of this movie just about right? Look at the rise of reality programming. Is Running Man that different from something like Survivor or The Amazing Race, with only the addition of some gore and bloodshed? I'm not sure it would it be that much of a stretch anymore to think the public might just have an appetite for executions televised as sport.

Re: Was the premise prophetic?

It certainly got it right that oil and natural resources are in low supplies. It got much of the technology right too. It also seems we are on the verge of a collapse the way the Obamas spend money, too many takers, and the way the Fed is printing money like crazy.

Re: Was the premise prophetic?

I was pointing out how people have become addicted to watching suffering in "reality" programming, but you just had to bring politics into this, didn't you? Fine, you want politics? How about a certain president lying to us about WMDs in Iraq, shades of Killian and company lying about Richards to get the public to support his cause? Thirteen years later, we're still stuck trying to fix the damn mess he created. Mission accomplished, eh? Meanwhile, his cowardly brother refuses to say that the invasion was unjustified, saying hypotheticals "disservice" the American men and women who have died in the conflict. No, you latest in a dynasty of liars, getting them killed in the first place over a personal vendetta and ego trip was the greatest disservice.

Re: Was the premise prophetic?

Sorry, that you are so touchy. It is a political film. The first forty minutes show us what our government looks like in 2019.

As for lying goes, Obama totally lied his way into office. He hasn't kept several of his promises. He also keeps his personal records secret which looks shady.

Re: Was the premise prophetic?

Yes, our great government, mostly dominated by Homeland Security. Guess who started that? Dubya never lied. Right. He kept every single one of his promises and we know everything he and every president ever did in office. Right. You're a cretin who's not worth responding to anymore.

Re: Was the premise prophetic?

Whatever, libtard. You voted for the most unqualified person in office. He made the economy worse after Bush. The real unemployment rate is about 14%. Obama also carried on the agenda of Bush and is going to collapse the economy at one point. I could list several things that suck about Democrats but you are not worth the time.

You dismiss that as not that big of a stretch, but it is. There is a huge difference between watching people play a jumped up version of Legends Of The Hidden Temple in an actual jungle and people killing each other for entertainment. These reality shows are just game shows, safe and controlled for the most part. Most of the reality programming these days is either of the voyeuristic variety (Karadashians, Real Housewives), about niche careers (Duck Dynasty, Swamp People, Pawn Stars) or just about buying and refurbishing stuff. It's mostly harmless. And even in the more extreme shows like Survivor or whatever, the suffering people want to see is more along the lines of people crying or having to eat bugs, not getting murdered with a chainsaw. It would take more than just the natural progression of our appetite for entertainment to make televised bloodsport a reality. Which is why in most movies where this type of thing goes on, such as Running Man, it's after a major shift in society either because of war or disaster. I think something would have to happen to make us value human life much less than we currently do as a society before we would be able to stand for watching people being hunted down and murdered for entertainment.

See you guys at the 10 year prison reunion - Ben Richards

Re: Was the premise prophetic?

I don't think so. Certain things about it do add up, such as the crisis about resources, but it's way too far-fetched to happen any time soon or to happen at all. Just like The Purge, Battle Royale/The Hunger Games etc.

"Ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?"

Re: Was the premise prophetic?

This movie definitely predicted reality TV going down a more seedy and sinister path. No, we don't have people killing each other on camera, but we do have reality shows that deliberately try to instigate violent confrontations for the amusement of the audience.

No.

The bloodshed was the whole point of The Running Man, so they are very different.

Based on what?
