Religion, Faith, and Spirituality : Was Christ married with children?
Re: Was Christ married with children?
It's a good point. The Bible never specifies whose wedding it is. But it does say both Jesus and Mary, his mother, were there.
And it is Mary who tells Jesus the guests wanted wine. Of what importance is Mary to this wedding that she is the concerned one for the wedding's catering? And Jesus and his staff on hand took the time to magically brew it, probably during the reception. It would have to be someone very important to both Mary and Jesus's family.

As suggested in this scripture - Jesus, his mom, and disciples were invited to a wedding. Why then would he be invited to his own wedding? I think you are reaching, and the notion that Jesus married and fathered children is sacrilege.
The bible states repeatedly that Christ is figuratively married to the church.
The wedding is featured so prominently, because it was one of the first places where Jesus publicly performed a miracle.

John 2:1 - 11
1 On the third day there was a wedding at i Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with j his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." 4 And Jesus said to her, k "Woman, l what does this have to do with me? m My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

Ephesians 5:22-32
Marriage Like Christ and the Church
22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body. 31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.

Re: Was Christ married with children?
the notion that Jesus married and fathered children is sacrilegeNo it's not. jesus was a rabbi. To not be married would have been the actual taboo. I realize it's easy to forget that Christ was a Jew…never an actual Christian (as there were no Christian's for a hundred years after his death)…but those are the facts and not debatable.
Re: Was Christ married with children?
We all know that Jesus was Jewish, but there is nothing in the bible to suggest he was married with children. People make assumptions because Mary Magdalene is heavily featured in the bible as a devoted disciple of Christ, who was there at his crucifixion and resurrection.
There is no hard evidence which points to them being husband and wife; and to suggest there could be some truth to this unfounded speculation is pure conspiracist hogwash.

You're an idiot. He wasnt here "to live like us and experience what we do" He came to reveal the truth. What is the truth? He is the truth. His mission was to pay the debt of death that Mankind's sin created.
He is the way and the truth and the life. He who believes in him and lives shall never die. And he who believes in him and has died shall live again.
Jesus is eternal. From everlasting to everlasting. Whrn people like you and Gameboy speak about Lord and ascribe Man made things to him and his traits, it sickens me. Marriage and Children?
May God have mercy on your miserable souls.

Re: Was Christ married with children?
If Jesus were actually here to live like us, he would have also fallen victim to temptation. Which he did not.
His purpose on earth, was not to mirror the life of men and attain what we have. Why? Because man is sinful, lustful, and subject to corruption. Why would one who is unblemished, not corrupt, and has never sinned emulate us? Lust itself is a sin.
Falling in love with a woman would involve lusting for her. Giving in to lust to marry a woman would have caused Jesus to sin, thus defeating his purpose on earth and giving Satan the victory.
This is also the reason why the Lord initially prohibited Adam and Eve from eating from tree of life. For if they did, it would open their eyes to the knowledge of all things (including sex) and cause them to sin and transgress against him. Which they did.
Our goal as Christians is to emulate Jesus and live how he lived, not the other way around. Satan tempted Jesus throughout his life on earth, and Jesus rebuked him at every turn. We as humans mistakenly believe that our desires are also God's desires, when the bible said:
Isaiah 55:8-9: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Jesus stayed on the move, preaching the gospel and gave up all of his worldly possessions to do so. He was here to bring us the gospel, preach the truth of God's love and forgiveness, teach us about salvation and how to obtain it, and to redeem mankind by dying for our sins.
John 14:6
6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Peter was jealous of Mary because of her position as one of the highest ranking disciples in a culture and religion dominated by men, and her close proximity to Jesus. So there was probably a bit of sexism behind Peter's jealousy.

why would falling in love be so far fetched? He is Gods and Mary's child. Why would he deny half of what he is?

Not just Jewish…a rabbi. This is an important distinction.
There is nothing in the Bible that should be taken as an historical account
There is no hard evidence that supports Christ's existence either.
Also, could you point me to the passage in the Bible that states the son of God taking a wife to be sacrilege?

Sure PE, as soon as you point me to a scripture in the bible that states Jesus was married with a wife and kids.
Which totally defeats the point of your whole attempt at a rebuttal. Stop wasting my time.

It really doesn't effect my stance. I'm playing the fairy tale game. I truly believe Christ to be a fairy tale, but others don't…I can play their game if need be.
Also…I'm not PE. Im actually one of your contemporaries. I've not been insulting, I just have differing opinions. I'm also sorry that you see a calm exchange of ideas to be a waste of your time… I'll waste no more👍

Re: Was Christ married with children?
I truly believe Christ to be a fairy tale
Precisely. Since you don't believe in Christ, what's the point in trying to explain something that doesn't even pertain to you? I typically don't engage in religious debates, because most people (even follow Christians) often cannot come to a consensus about an interpreted scripture.
My faith is an integral part of my life, as is my belief in God and Christ. I don't force my beliefs on anyone, but when we are taking part in a discussion such as this, I have no problem expressing my opinions. If I feel as though the other person is open to learning or respectfully disagreeing that is fine, but I don't want this to turn into a battle of the atheists against the christians, because I didn't sign up for that.
Feel free to continue sharing your opinion, if you wish. I'll not stop you.

Here's the King James Version:
And his marriage to the church doesn't abrogate that he had a wife.
The Gnostic Gospel of Philip 63:32-64:10 says his "companion" was Mary Magdalene.
So what is the significance of this marriage that both he and his mother are there?

Jesus didn't come down here to live like us, but to show us how to live like him.
Like I said before, Jesus was figuratively married to the church, why then would he take on an earthly wife?
https://www.gotquestions.org/marriage-supper-Lamb.html
Question: "What is the marriage supper of the Lamb?"
Answer: In his vision in Revelation 19:7–10, John saw and heard the heavenly multitudes praising God because the wedding feast of the Lamb—literally, the “marriage supper”—was about to begin. The concept of the marriage supper is better understood in light of the wedding customs in the time of Christ.

What John’s vision in Revelation pictures is the wedding feast of the Lamb (Jesus Christ) and His bride (the Church) in its third phase. The implication is that the first two phases have already taken place. The first phase was completed on earth when each individual believer placed his or her faith in Christ as Savior. The dowry paid to the bridegroom’s parent (God the Father) would be the blood of Christ shed on the Bride’s behalf. The Church on earth today, then, is “betrothed” to Christ, and, like the wise virgins in the parable, all believers should be watching and waiting for the appearance of the Bridegroom (the rapture). The second phase symbolizes the rapture of the Church, when Christ comes to claim His bride and take her to the Father’s house. The marriage supper then follows as the third and final step. It is our view that the marriage supper of the Lamb takes place in heaven between the rapture and the second coming (during the tribulation on earth).

Lol. I don't know if he did or didn't. But I do know some wise men in the Mormon Church say he did.
When he took on human flesh he wore clothes like us and he ate food like us so what's to say he did not love a woman, have sex, and have children?

The same Mormon church founded by Joseph Smith. So some random unnamed "wiseman" from the Mormon church said something, and you automatically believed it? Part of being a Christian or believer in God, is to hold steadfast in your faith, and not make yourself susceptible to false indoctrination.
All I say to that is:
Beware of False Doctrines and False Teachers (Prophets)
Jesus taught, "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits" (Mt. 7:15,16).
2 Peter 2:1-3 ESV / 941 helpful votes Helpful Not Helpful
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
1 Timothy 6:3-10
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
1 John 4:1-3
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
2 Peter 2:1

Re: Was Christ married with children?
First, the LDS Church has never officially stated that Christ was married. But Mormonism has a vibrant theology and there are many who debate the great issues.
So I find it a bit sectarian and bigoted that you'll attack the Mormon Church and try to delegitimize it because it had a spiritually inspired founder. Luther and others were inspired as well. Who's to say?
But you're taking a sectarian leap and calling Smith a false prophet. Is the Pope a false prophet? He claims to be infallible. Is Luther a false prophet? He protested against the Catholic Church?

Re: Was Christ married with children?
You know what GB, I'm saying this to you as a Christian to a non-Christian. I was taught from a young age, when it comes to all of these different branches of Christianity and denominations, if the doctrine of that church doesn't fall in line with what the scripture says, walk away from it.
Let me put it in simple terms for you:
I'm not a Catholic, because I don't pray to Mary or the saints; I pray to God as Jesus did. I'm not a Jehovah's witness, because although I don't celebrate holidays or partake in drugs and alcohol, I believe there is a hell. I'm not a Moron, because I believe in the holy trinity and I don't believe in being wed to multiple spouses. I'm not a Lutheran, because I believe in full body immersion during baptism. And so on. I'm a non-denominational Christian.
You can find it however you want; I'm not locked into one particular sect of the Christianity. I read my bible, pray, and commune with the Lord on my own time. It's human fallacy to believe that one church is the perfect embodiment of Christ, and the only way to salvation is to embrace their doctrine. Most Christians can't even come to a consensus on which road is the best to travel on their way to enlightenment. That is why we have so many different branches of Christianity.
If you believe so strongly in what you are saying to me, why then did YOU turn your back on God and Christianity? Is your grandstanding and pontificating all for show? If you really believe everything you are trying to sell me, why aren't you buying into it yourself?

Often I'll debate points of philosophy as well. I did so with Ben. I do with Patrick. One can argue the pros and cons of a philosophy even if one does not accept it in its entirety. So there are atheistic philosophies and there are theistic philosophies. There are pantheistic and deistic philosophies which are somewhere in between. You don't have to be a believer to discuss ideas.
You seem to approach this from some sectarian position that says I'm right, I interpret the Bible correctly, and anyone who doesn't, be they Catholic or Mormon or Lutheran, are wrong. Smith was no more a "false prophet" than Luther or the Pope. He had what he felt was a revelation and so be it.
And you just said you believe in the trinity. That idea is not found in the Bible either. It was invented in Rome. The trinity is an interpretation of scripture. It is not set in stone.

For me, it's a waste of time. None of the 3 of you are even Christian, let alone believe in God, so you can debate about atheistic/theistic philosophies et al, and it means nothing to you. This is my faith that we are discussing here; a belief system and doctrine that I live my life by. Not some arbitrary philosophical talking point to be dissected and desecrated before moving on to the next topic of discussion.
No, I'm saying that it has to jive with what the scripture says, or I have to at least find some sort of reasonable explanation for what you are saying in the bible, if I am to take you seriously. My directives come from God, not from some pastor in a church who may or may not be anointed to preach the gospel, and I take up counsel with those of like mind who I can worship with to strengthen my faith.
Wondering whether Jesus had a wife and kids or not, isn't of any importance to me, because it doesn't factor into my life (at all) as a Christian woman living in a secular world. Debating about Jesus' marital status, isn't paramount to my salvation, nor is it in any way consequential to my ultimate goal of going to heaven once my soul leaves this body for good.
And you just said you believe in the trinity. That idea is not found in the Bible either. It was invented in Rome. The trinity is an interpretation of scripture. It is not set in stone.
Trinitarian formulas found in the New Testament include Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:13, 1 Corinthians 12:4-5, Ephesians 4:4-6, 1 Peter 1:2 and Revelation 1:4-5. These passages provided the material with which Christians would develop doctrines of the Trinity.
The Trinity in Matthew 28:19
Nazianzus’s use of a numerical example is fruitful beyond his immediate purpose. Although he does not make the connection, part of the question about whether the doctrine of the Trinity is in the Bible is the question of whether the number three is in the Bible with reference to divine things.
Throughout his theological orations, Nazianzus explicates “the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (Matt 28:19), which he summarizes as a threefold name.
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”—Matthew 28:19
He frequently uses the word triad in reference to God, but also in reference to the threeness in the words of the risen Lord as he gave the baptismal command. Triad simply is Greek for threeness, just as thrynnysse is Anglo-Saxon and trinitas is Latin for threeness. Any reader of Matthew 28:19 must admit there is threeness, or trinity, in the biblical text.
So in closing, although the "Trinity" is not mentioned by name in the bible, the trinitarian formulation of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is.
Now, since we have been going on about this for two days, I'd like to move on to something else. Unless this debate has yet to reveal something I didn't already know?

I guess you could say that. I just never saw asking someone to pray for you as also a prayer itself. Lol.

@Platonic_Caveman, @~AnnaMaria~ You are guys Catholics? Or in GB's case, a former Catholic?Lol. No, I was raised Greek Orthodox. Orthodox and Catholic are similar but Orthodox reject the Pope and don't believe any man can be infallible.

I used to date a black Greek Orthodox monk, if you can believe that. The brotha was weird to say the least, and he was always trying to get me to convert.

The priest at my family's Greek Orthodox Church is Irish. Many Catholic clergy leave their church and become Orthodox so they can marry.

I was seriously considering it, but he had some strange sexual fetishes that I just couldn't get with. But he did tell me that the Greek Orthodox bible is the first and only authentic bible, and that I should read it to learn the true word of God instead of the KJV.

Re: Was Christ married with children?
Roman Catholics claim their church to be the direct heirs of the Apostles. But the first Christian communities were all Greek. If you look at Paul's epistles, most were written to Greek congregations - Corinthians, Ephesians, Thessalonians, et al. The original language of the New Testament was Greek.
When the Catholics and Orthodox split in 1054, a great case can be made that the Orthodox Church inherited the authority of the 12 Apostles.

Yes, he explained all of this, which is why he said what he did about the Greek Orthodox bible.
What's your opinion on black Jews? I'm not talking about the black Israelites or Ethiopian Jews, but black people who have converted to Judaism? I used to date such a guy and would sometimes attend synagogue with him.
I've led an interesting life and met a lot of unique people along the way.
Oh and to add: The guy after this one was a black Wiccan. I was engaged to him before I met my husband. The Wiccan guy and I parted ways after I refused to give up Christianity. This is why you can't believe all of those stereotypes about black people, we're an eclectic bunch.

Jews have wealth and power and I have known people who converted to establish some great business connections.
Judaism is a tribal religion. It's like Japanese Shintoism in that regard. Shintoism is the native religion of the Japanese people and doesn't seek converts. Jews aren't out to convert people like Christians.
You remember Ivmeer of course. Once she told me that only Jews will go to heaven.

True and I can't recall how his family came about converting their religion to Judaism, but they had some connections to the local Rabbis in their area that I never got the full gist of.

Well, Ivy is entitled to her opinion, just like we all are.

Re: Was Christ married with children?
The current Pope does not believe in a physical resurrection of Christ. The current Pope also doesnt believe in Hell. He says Hell is made up, just something to scare people.
The current Pope is an apostate. He will burn for an eternity.
In World War 2 Pope Pius XII stood silent instead of being a leading voice against fascism and the Nazis.
The House of Borgia produced two Popes: Pope Callixtus III and Pope Alexander VI . And the House of Borgia was a house of Sin and debauchery.
So spare me the lecture. The Vatican has been Corrupt for Centuries. And I didnt even mention the alleged ties that The Vatican had with La Cosa Nostra from 1968 to 1981.
Plus , you're a former Satanist and Neo Nazi. So morality is hardly your area of expertise.

Re: Was Christ married with children?
John 2:1 - 11
1 On the third day there was a wedding at i Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with j his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." 4 And Jesus said to her, k "Woman, l what does this have to do with me? m My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
That's right. Basically, Jesus was asexual.

Re: Was Christ married with children?
This is from William Phipps, a Presbyterian minister and Biblical scholar who maintains Christ must have been married like all Jewish men and especially rabbis. All the Apostles were married. In those times an unmarried man would have been ostracized.

The traditional assumption that Jesus was a celibate is totally incon gruous with the fact that marriage at an early age was a sacred obliga tion in the Hebrew culture in which he was reared. Celibacy was complete ly rejected in both theory and in prac tice among the ancient Jews.
My studies reveal, however, that in the many centuries of biblical history there is not a single instance of life long celibacy recorded anywhere in the records of Palestinian Judaism. The Qumran scrolls display that even the sect of Essene Jews—who were for merly thought to have been a com munity of unmarried monks—had wives. In I eviticus, religious leaders are commanded to marry. All Jews took with utmost seriousness the first Torah commandment, “Be fruitful and multiply.” Moreover, they believed marriage served more than a procrea tive and companionship purpose. On the basis of Genesis 5:2 the ancient rabbis claimed that an individual was not a full human until married.

That's one rogue scholar's opinion against thousands. Are you serious right now?
There were also "scholars" who extolled the virtues of slavery and proclaimed it as "God's will" and the black man's preordained destiny. You'll find a so-called expert who will support any stance you take, if you look hard enough.
Keep in mind that the Rabbis, Scribes, and Jewish leaders at the time considered Jesus a heretic (which led to his crucifixion), because although he followed the Torah, he didn't entirely adhere to every aspect of it or Jewish law. Like when it came to observing the Sabbath for instance.
I should be going to bed. I have to be up and out of here bright and early this morning.

The Wedding at Cana where Jesus changed water to wine is posited as Jesus's own wedding to Mary Magdalene. Why else would a wedding be featured so prominently?
