Underworld: Blood Wars : Varga….(spoiler)

Varga….(spoiler)

I don't recall seeing him at the end. Did he survive? If so, did he ever answer for killing the recruits and framing Selene under Semira's orders? Thanks in advance for any responses.

"The storm cannot be stopped, but it can be survived.'"

Re: Varga….(spoiler)

Yes, he survived. No, he wasn't punished. He only did his job, which was follow Semira's orders as leader of the coven. Now that David is the leader (and was proven as such through his lineage and Amelia's blood memories), he is loyal to David. Varga is not a weasel like Tanis. He doesn't serve individuals he serves the coven leader, unquestioningly. That person is and forever will be David, by birthright.

Punishing David for obeying Semira would be hypocritical: had he refused to help Semira when Semira was in power, Semira would have had him killed for refusing to obey, and rightly so, since he was her subject. If you look at it from Varga's perspective, he was between a rock and a hard place. David understands this, even if Varga helped kill his father. Once it was firmly established that David was the rightful ruler, Varga did not hesitate to fight for him.

Example: if you watch Game of Thrones, Ser Barristan was a knight to the Mad King, sworn to protect him. When the Mad King died, the new king, Robert, pardoned Ser Barristan because of his bravery and loyalty to the king, no matter who the king is or was. Ser Barristan killed many people in the war, some of them even King Robert's friends. But King Robert saw that Ser Barristan was loyal to the Crown almost to a fault and decided to keep him around.

That kind of logic might not match our current sensibilities, but vampires operate much like a royal succession line, where hierarchy is more important than the individuals in each position.

Re: Varga….(spoiler)

I agree with all of this. Early on, it was clear that Varga was only doing what he was ordered. He was being emotionally and sexually abused by Semira. His loyalty to her was never personal and always about the coven. He may have been a relatively minor character, but he was actually fairly complex.

Go with your heart, buddy. Our brains only screw things up.

Re: Varga….(spoiler)

What I don't understand is why he was so loyal to Semira in particular. She was probably the most ambitious council member, but she was low-ranking. Why did Varga follow Semira's orders in situations where he knew that Cassius would overrule her? Maybe the chain of command in the coven is very strict, and he couldn't go over her head I don't know.

Re: Varga….(spoiler)

Like we've said, he was being abused by her, so I don't think it was as much loyalty as it was maybe fear. She probably saw she could manipulate him, and the others maybe didn't care what he did. He was her subject. As someone else said, she probably would have killed him/had him killed if he hadn't followed orders.

Re: Varga….(spoiler)

That makes sense. I guess he wasn't in a position to calmly reflect on his situation and find a way out.

Re: Varga….(spoiler)

Semira was the ‘head of house’ of the Eastern Coven and as Varga himself pointed out, he had sworn his loyalty to whoever was the leader of the house.

Re: Varga….(spoiler)

So if David wanted some gay sex, Varga would let him do it?

Re: Varga….(spoiler)

To be fair, Varga didn’t seem to want to be with Semira much either sexually and she treated him horribly, but he submitted due to him having sworn himself to the leader of the Eastern Coven.

So my guess, would be yes.

Varga likley wouldn’t want or enjoy it, but he’d submit if the new leader forced the issue.
