Mysterious Skin : UFOs

UFOs

The part of this story devoted to UFOs was very disappointing. I expected so much more...

Re: UFOs

What were you expecting, I wonder? It's not meant to be a science fiction film.

Re: UFOs

I haven't yet seen the film, but, please do tell why that part was disappointing?

I am currently reading the book, and I can't wait to see the movie because the story has touched me so; but somehow I only became aware of the movie because of the UFO aspect. (I've had my own encounter).

I am curious if they actually show the craft, or not.

Thanks!

Re: UFOs

Why was that part disappointing? Because that part wasn't explored. Instead the story seemed to only delve into gay themes, not UFOs.

Re: UFOs

Oh, I see. It is a pretty interesting aspect of the book, but I could see how the filmmaker could stick with the sexual themes - for the sake of succinctness.

Re: UFOs

There's a post in another thread that you may want to look over. Basically, the gist of it is that this is not a 'gay-themed' film -- this is a story about child abuse/paedophilia and how it affects people differently. There are gay characters, yes, but is this, say, Brokeback Mountain or Milk? No.

As to the UFOs, again, I have no idea what you were expecting. It's not a science fiction film. It's explained that alien abduction/UFOs were Brian's way of dealing with what happened to him as a child. This is how his repression manifests itself. The film does explore this topic adequately, but if you were expecting something different, then I can see why you might think otherwise.

Re: UFOs

There was a scene with the entire family looking at a UFO outside their house; did his repressed feelings manifest something that could be seen by others?

Uh huh...

I find it a little odd that your scripture stick has dried blood on it.

Re: UFOs

Only because you missed the whole point.

There was no "part of the story devoted to UFOs." The subject was, and remained, false memories.

That's the whole significance of alien abduction stories ... or do you suppose they represent real experiences?

Re: UFOs

No, I got the point of the story now. However I didn't go into it with preconceived notions.

As I've seen other movies where they delved into the subject as if it were true. I guess I was hoping that part of the movie was more interesting.

Interesting link you provided though.

Re: UFOs

this movie was so misleading, i read the description and it said something about UFO's and i thought oh great maybe it's a mysterious movie with possible aliens in it, then all of a sudden some dudes are having sex
