Bud Abbott : The ring on Buds left hand?

I've been watching quite a bit of Abbott and Costello's movies and TV appearances and 5b4 one thing that I never fail to notice is the ring on Bud's pinkie finger on his left hand. Does anyone know why he always wore it? Was it his wedding band or something else?

Anybody have any ideas?
