The Wizard of Oz : The last to go will see the first three go before her

The last to go will see the first three go before her

There are four of them, so shouldn't the line be: the last to go will see the first two go before her?

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

The line implies that the last to go will not be Dorothy; therefore, there would only be two remaining to go before her.

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

^^^ Simple math. Think of it. She's saying Dorothy will be the last. There's:

1. Scarecrow.
2. Tin-Man.
3. Lion.
4. Dorothy.

The last (Dorothy) to go, will see the first three (Scarecrow, Tin-Man, Lion) go before HER (Dorothy).

Not only can't you do simple math, you can't seem to grasp that since Dorothy was the only female the line definitely states that she will be the last to go since it says the first three will go before her.

I don't know what they have to say. It makes no difference anyway. Whatever it is, I'm against it.

Your version only works in a world where 1+2=4. The last to go plus the first 2 before her equals 3.

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

Actually this is an edited line. Noticing how the film cuts abroptly to the witch when she says it. There were many lines in the film that were edited because it would have been to frightening forbthe children. The original, line was to have been: "Our pretty little miss here will be the last to go. We'll see the first three go before her. And her mangy little, dog too!" They cut it so that she says....the last to. We'll see the first three go before her." Think about it. It doesn't make sense any other way. The writers would be really bad script writers to have such a awkward line. Another line that was edited if you'll notice is in the Munchkinland scene where Dorothy fearfully tells the witch it was an accident and she didn't mean to kill anybody. The original line for the witch was: "Well, my little pretty I can cause accidents too and this is how I,do it!" In the edited version they cut the " and this is how I do it." You can tell the witch is saying "and this" before it cuts abruptly to Glinda saying, "Aren't you forgetting the ruby slippers?" This is all in the 50th Anniversary Oz book.

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

I don't know if you meant to reply to me, but I'm not following. Even if evwrything you say is accurate, what does that have to do with the OP's incorrect math?

If there are 4 people, the last one would see the other 3 go before she went. 3+1=4. That's 4 people "going". Whether or not the line was abbreviated, it was still accurate.

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

I've always noticed those quick cuts. Pretty much all of the Wicked Witch's scenes were trimmed down because she was deemed too scary.

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

Well no, wouldn't the three go before her, and I don't think she was counting Toto

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

Following this thread is getting my head spinning like the house in the tornado. Yes, Dorothy will see the other 3 go before her.🐭

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

We have a victim of common core math.

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

dogs don't do math

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her

Took me a while but I think I see your confusion.. The way that line is written, one might think that the "last to go" and "her" might be two different people. But that was just the witch's way of telling Dorothy that she will be the last to go and will have to watch her three friends get killed.

Yes, thank you for explaining the OP's logic to us. Too bad there's no way to bump your post up to near the top, to save the rest of us the headache of trying to figure out what he/she is talking about.
😀

Badgers? We don't need no stinkin' badgers! But if you could show us something in a nice possum…

Re: The last to go will see the first three go before her
