Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones : The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

Okay, so we've got Anakin Skywalker, who was only allowed to be a Jedi on a technicality, now grown into a towering bucket of hormones, and he is reunited with Padme Amidala, the woman he'd been obsessing over for years. So then what happens? They send him and her on an unchaperoned, all expenses paid retreat—I mean hideout to the most scenic and romantic friggin' planet in the galaxy. R2-D2 was there, but he didn't say anything cuz he ain't no snitch.

Trusting someone and putting them through trials is one thing, but not recognizing a terrible idea is another.

They've been sitting up in the Jedi Temple too long.

"Anakin is a loose cannon!" — what Obi-Wan should've said.

There is no objective reality... and that's Sucker Punch

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

Well yeah, it should have been Obi-Wan that escorted Padme to Naboo, and Anakin should have been the one investigating the deleted planet Kamino.

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

That probably would've worked better. Or—it's been a while since I've seen the movie—why did it have to be Obi-Wan and Anakin at all? I bet if you asked the Jedi Council, they'd say, "The Dark Side was clouding our judgement" etc.

Maybe they should keep a civilian 8 year old girl on staff to say, "And Anakin and Padme will fall in love! That's so romantic!"

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

Anakin and Obi-Wan were assigned to Padme because of their familiarity with her and both those events, Kamino and Naboo, came from their assignment, Zams failed assassination attempt.

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

It was Palps who suggested that Obi Wan ("an old friend") be assigned to protect her. Anakin tagged along as his apprentice.

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

The original film established that the Jedi were all but extinct. You don't generally get to that point without a bad decision or two.

"Have to say, Jimmy - you turned into a real impressive fighter. If I was ol' Mengsk, I'd be runnin' scared from you, too."
"You really mean that, Tychus?"
"Nah. I was just kiddin'."

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

The Jedi councils extinction is not an automatic suggestion of mistake making, and even if it was there still is no excuse for them being the most obliviously stupid like that they are portrayed in the prequels.

Well, doh. That was the point Lucas was putting across. A healthy, vibrant Jedi Order wouldn't get destroyed by the Sith.

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

I think they must have figured that it was an easy assignment with little chance of combat, and would be a suitable first assignment for him to do solo. And I don't recall the council was aware that Anakin was in love with her, while Obi Wan thought that Anakin's only real flaw is being impatient and arrogant, but otherwise is able to control his lust.

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

obi wan was worried about anakin going on a protection mission on his own.

bird signs you want to plan a strategy based on bird signs.

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

I thilnk there was more to it than him being alone for the assignment, he knows that Anakin has strong feeling Padme and the possibility of trouble. However, the Jedi should know as he was kissing and embracing Padme at the end of AOTC.

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

The Jedi having Anakin play babysitter for the woman he clearly yearns for is a great test of his abilities and strength as a Jedi. Mind you, he fails miserably, but what good are trainers if they're not ever going to truly test you?

Also Anakin was better suited to play bodyguard then go around the galaxy playing Dick Tracy. Obi-Wan has instincts and resources that Anakin simply does not.

Re: The Jedi counsel's phenomenally stupid idea

Thats a good explanation. They already have doubts about Anakin and this would be an easy non-combat, non-confrontational way to test them.

Only problem is that they never followed up on him and how well he did this task.
