The Rocky Horror Picture Show : Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

Anyone catch in the opening scene of the wedding the four as the preacher (Frank) and
the chapel staff who carry in the coffin while Brad and Janet sing about getting engaged and married. So,
the aliens make their first appearance as American Gothic impersonators before the castle setting.

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

I noticed it since the first time I saw the movie.

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

I noticed them, but I just figured they were different characters, meant more as a joke.

I can't really see why Frank and his entourage would want to infiltrate the wedding beforehand. And they don't act like they saw Brad and Janet at the church earlier.

I don't think they are supposed to be different characters. The Criminologist has photos of them with their faces circled.

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

I just don't see why it would be them. There's no logical reason WHY they would do it. Frank and his staff never act as if they saw Brad & Janet earlier. Frank seemed certain that they were there to spy on him

Frank saying "How 'bout that?" the way he did is just him being flamboyant. That's all. Sometimes a cigar is only a cigar.

To be fair, a lack of a logical reason IS a logical resaon for a barm like Frank to do something!

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

Then why bother to draw attention to it.

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

Look. Frankenfurter et all are NOT the people at the church, okay?

Seriously. What would they have to gain from being at the wedding? How could this infiltration POSSIBLY serve any of Frankenfurter's needs? All he wanted was to make his new boy toy. That's it. Pretending he was a preacher would do absolutely NOTHING to advance that agenda.

Curry being at the wedding is just a visual joke. Nothing more. There's absolutely NO logical reason for Frankenfurter and Co. to be there. If that was them, they would have made a point of it at Frank's house. And they were genuinely surprised at Prof. Scott's appearance. If they were interested in Brad and Janet beforehand, they would've known of Brad's connection. Brad and Janet's presence would not be essential to making Rocky, as Frank already had him ready to go without them.

Show me ONE instance at the mansion that even HINTS that they were also at the wedding.

Literally THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of movies and television programs had one actor playing two or more roles. That didnt mean they were the exact same entity.

I do not Believe That People can be so thick. The fact that there faces are circled in the picture must mean something !!!!

They make it very clear that the car didn't just break down, it was planned.

Also I believe it's to add to the topic of shame with gender/sexuality. Both Janet and Brad have sex with a transvestite in private, and are ashamed in public. People feel they have to hide who they really are in public. They're the same people, but can't show it.

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

I think it's more of an easter egg than some conspiracy like they were behind it all along.

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

Yeah, I have noticed it. The church where the wedding is taking place seems to be their church. Frank seems to be the minister [or whatever type of holy man he was] and he most likely conducted the wedding between Brad and Janet's friends. I guess that's their cover and how they make money. Unless they have some machine that makes money from them, they'd need some way to support themselves while their on earth.

Frank didn't seem to be around when Brad and Janet did their little number inside the church and talked of going to visit Dr. Scott [although they never mention his name]. Of course, Frank being Frank probably would have had fun toying with the newly engaged couple. He could have had them watched and had something put in the road to puncture the tire so they'd get stranded right near his mansion. He didn't exactly seem shocked about them being there or worried. He could have let them use the phone and be on there way, but instead he had them stripped down and brought to the lab to see the unveiling of Rocky and later he slips in both their bedrooms.

It's an interesting point to debate.

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

Actually, I realized three of the characters were there at the beginning. I didn't catch the photo shot originally and saw in a book about the film that the Minister was Frank and saw a picture of the photo shot and then realized he was there too.

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

Yes this was all very intentional, and referenced later in the movie. You'll notice Riff Raff's "farmer" character is holding a pitchfork (a reference to the famous painting "American Gothic".) At the end of the movie when Riff Raff is holding his gun, it is in the shape of a pitchfork.

They could have been there to steal body parts for Rocky

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

"They could have been there to steal body parts for Rocky"

Hmmm! First time I've heard that theory! Cool!

I've been torn about this issue for decades. One one hand I agree that it's just a visual joke. But yes I admit that I also noticed that The Criminologist had circled their pictures in his slideshow.

Barring any input from Mr. O'Brien my vote is to err on the side of a visual joke.

Speaking of The Denton Affair, during "Eddie's Teddy" when the narrator sings, "But he never caused her nothing but shame.", the picture of Eddie's mom, the Whistler's Mother parody, is actually Meat Loaf himself!

Re: Overlooked at the Church: Magenta, Frank, Columbia & Riff Raff

I think Curry being there was either a joke or the person they did get for the priest didn't show so they were "Hey Tim, put on the robe".

Since they had RiffRaff circled I am just saying they were harvesting organs for Rocky
