Westworld : Old hosts vs new

Old hosts vs new

I've been re watching the series.

One of the standouts is Lawrence. When he is walking around d with mib he is like a real person. Then cut to his death and his second appearance to Billy and pals and he becomes robotic in his acting.

Clearly a nod to the last designs.

The first scene in the ep is Ford talking to the first bartender...or whoever he is...one of the original originals...and it's extremely robotic.

I might be late to the party since I haven't discussed much of this show with anyone. Just wanted to point it out.

Re: Old hosts vs new

You mean Old Bill who says "Shall we drink to the lady with the white shoes?". He seems like a very early experiment. Just as the piano player in Ford's office in the last episode.

The first robots looked just like robots inside, and the later ones are just like flesh and blood. Even Dolores and all the others who have been updates.

Re: Old hosts vs new

Rebus, Dolores, Maeve, Armistice, Lawrences daughter, Abernathy, Angela, Teddy all were all around during the first host slaughter in Escalante / Arnolds self-sacrifice. But the narrative has played out more than once in several loops after that. Dolores was constantly revisiting her steps.

Just not with Arnolds death at the end of it.

Dolores is also the oldest host in the park, and shes been repaired so many times shes practically brand new.

Re: Old hosts vs new

The fact that Dolores has been repaired so many times says something about what she has gone through. If she now remembers all those injuries caused by rape and other attacks, it could be a little traumatic for her and explain why she was so eager to kill the humans.

Re: Old hosts vs new

This too, for sure. She also remembers what MiB has done to her over the decades so no wonder she got a lil aggro :)

Re: Old hosts vs new

I made the assumption that her body was upgraded from the old more robotic system to the newer more bio form.

I think this in turn due to mibs discussion with teddy when he was bleeding out. I'm not sure how old teddy is, I assumed he was also one of the first...

Re: Old hosts vs new

That's a very good point, you can really see differences in the upgrades made to them (all of the originals). Lawrence is a good example, very subtle differences in his acting. Also, it was intriguing to see the evolution of Armistice, from when she was first being "directed" on how to dance, there was such a sweet vulnerability about her (I know that is a strange observation about a robot). I loved the scene when Dolores was first born or technically brought online for the first the time, she was still mostly robot on the outside, I loved her first interaction with her creator.

However, I thought it was an interesting comment by the MIB (I'm paraphrasing), that by making the hosts seem more human, was actually cost effective. I can see how that would be the case, less mechanical workings on the inside, which likely makes maintenance and repairs much more expedient.

Re: Old hosts vs new

You can see Armastice stray off her group a bit during the rampage, and look around in wonder :) Was a nice touch.

Lawrence is an interesting one tho. MiB tells him "You used to be more eloquent" Its like Lawrence is carrying a grudge against MiB, hence why he keeps him tied up :D

They were super best pals back in the day right..hunted down Ghost Nation, MiB knows what he likes to whistle, knows his fav Whiskey. Etc. So that Lawrence dont recognize MiB is also a BIG clue.

The "Wetware" the new hosts are made of is some crazy nano tech indeed. No more robotic parts. Love the milky white liquid.

Now..is Rebus and his milkmaid narrative connected? ^
Walter ends up pouring milk over every dead body. Kinda erratic behaviour heh.

Re: Old hosts vs new

There is also the scene in the church where it looks like she is crying.

Re: Old hosts vs new

Yea shes not alone though. Those hosts were suffering from the 'inner voice of God' experiment. It didnt work well. Not to begin with anyway.

Re: Old hosts vs new

For all the differences between old and new hosts - emphasized most pointedly by the old models in Ford's office, the premise of the story makes it necessary to make that distinction pointless. The entire course of young Billy's experience obviously takes place 30 years prior to the events of the present yet none of the host appear diminished in any meaningful way.

Re: Old hosts vs new

I had many questions about old vs. new, mechanical vs. biological, etc. I was afraid the show wouldn't address them but it did. One important detail is that a host can be completely destroyed and remade. For example, Maeve was around when the park first opened, and was a mechanical robot like all the others. At some point they created a biological Maeve and scrapped the robot. In episodes 9 & 10 she intentionally destroys herself by fire and we see the tech, Sylvester, putting a skeleton together for the new Maeve. The only question I still have about this, is where is the "mind" so to speak kept? Is it in an airplane like black box that is able to withstand being destroyed and then placed in the new host? Or is the "mind" stored on a cloud and downloaded into the new host?

I adore simple pleasures, they are the last refuge of the complex.
