The Natural : Not A Movie For Sports Fans ???

Not A Movie For Sports Fans ???

I'm a guy, and I remember avidly going to see this back in 1984 when it was first released, and both my friend and I walking out afterwards, pretty much feeling 'ripped off' by the experience. Not that we had felt that it was necessarily a bad film, just that it was definitely NOT what we had hoped to see.

Both of us were 24 at the time, and had gone in (as typical baseball fans) expecting a "sports" film, based on the trailers we had seen, which led us to believe that's what it would be (in other words, a baseball film with a dramatic story, rather than the drama that it REALLY is, that just happens to be set in a baseball world).

Curious if there are any other sports fans who went to see it then, or have seen it since, who had the same, or a similar reaction.

I have to say though, that in the ensuing years, I've come around to better appreciating this film, now accepting it for what it is, and being better able to appreciate the 'finer' points it has to offer, in terms of acting performances, the great direction, music, and the outstanding production values (regarding props, sets, wardrobe, etc.).
