Film Art and Cinematography : New B&W Movies Suck

New B&W Movies Suck

I think its a trick to get the cocktail middle-class to like it. They're fucking awful. Gimmick. "Le Haine" sucks, and many more, but I won't name them because I don't want to advertise for those talent-less pieces of shit.

Last great b&w was probably "The Elephant Man"

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

While I'll not take anything away from the elephant man…to this day Lynch's
Best work IMO…I must interject Coppola's adaptation of SE Hintons
Rumble Fish as a later motion picture that utelized B&W properly and with artistic taste. Although not a masterpiece in film making…it is a wonderful adaptation that not only stays very true to the novel but uses the medium to further flesh out the character of the motorcycle boy.👍

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

I agree its Lynch' best, and I've seen every movie of his except "Dune" and "Inland Empire", but I actually liked the adaptation Coppola did for "The Outsiders" - which has the most pre-stars ever.

But I didn't like "Rumblefish" - seemed like HE was trying to be like Lynch.. Or a bit of "Mickey One", which can be traced to many French and American directors, that kind of muddled style, but with "good cinematography" to distract the critics from a bad screenplay.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

So I guess we more or less agree. The cinamatography was good… hence the use of B&W tasteful 👍

And yes…the screenplay for the outsiders was superior…but then again… so was the novel in comparison to rumble Fish.

I do respect Hinton for more or less retiring once she felt she no longer identified with the youth of the following generation 👍

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

Guy Maddin makes good black and white movies.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

Actually, later than 1980. I did like "Stranger Than Paradise" by Jim Jarmusch which I think was made in 1984.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

This one looks impressive. Piquant. And she’s damn smoking gorgeous. Like this kind of inked black&white. Not surprisingly the site where I came across the news about the trailer was just talking about similarities with Muddin…

Wow so stylish…love the black & white. And she’s so damn hot!

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

Le Haine was excellent but there was no need for it to be in black and white apart from the makers wanting it to be in black and white.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

I quite liked Call of Cthulhu.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

Yes, interesting. Looks nice. Missed it. Pity the trailer is only SD.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

It's worth hunting down to watch. Especially if you like Lovecraft. I thought they got the old black and white aesthetic quite right. It felt like a love note to both.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

I thought "The White Ribbon" was very well done. Along with Following, Man Bites Dog, Sin City and Wings of Desire. Although Wings was only 1/2 B&W. Still a brilliant film.

Sin City

Sin City isn't exactly in my wheelhouse but it was a very well done film. Like you said, the cinematography is pretty amazing.

The White Ribbon is another one that kind of sticks with you after you watch it.
Wings of Desire is just plain a brilliant film. It also has Peter Falk in a role that you never would have imagined him playing. As far as I'm concerned it's Wenders ultimate masterpiece. It should be required viewing for anybody who loves film.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

True, which is why we should spread the great ones, especially the unpopular stuff.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

I saw it 20 years ago, but I think it kinda worked. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Not sure how I'd feel about it today, but I imagine I'd still like it. I usually like dialogue-driven movies.

Re: New B&W Movies Suck

As posted in an other topic, for those interested (like me) in Three mirrors Creature's Flashes of Flesh, they released two new trailers. One is redband (with some nudity). Still nice use of black&white(imho) ande very very hot. Waiting for the screen release:
