The Natural : Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

I liked the movie but Redford I never could buy as a gritty ball player. He looks too good looking silver spoon type in the movie.

Does anyone know who else was considered for the role of Hobbs? I think DeNiro would have made a great Hobbs. The movie would have been more of a classic than just a baseball classic with DeNiro.

Re: Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

The irony to your post is Redford was a very good college player. The batting practice hits are actually Redford hitting the ball.

Re: Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

I thought he had a pretty good swing. I think he and Kevin Costner (Bull Durham) have been most credible at the dish. Redford supposedly modeled his swing after Ted Williams'. Chadwick Boseman did a pretty good job in 42 as well, although some of his scenes were a 'stunt' double.

Now, John Goodman, Tom Berringer, Wesley Snipes and Bernie Mac all looked embarrassingly bad. They all should have played pitchers.

Re: Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

To your point Charlie Sheen was a pitcher in college at Arizona or Arizona State.

The actor that played the DH in Major League never played baseball but was really hitting the balls in that batting practice. He liked it so much he joined a softball league.

The director's commentary for Major League is a riot. He didn't name names but he talked about guys not knowing what end of the bat to hold, how to throw the ball or run the bases.

Re: Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

FYI- Charlie Sheen never went to college. He was a star pitcher and shortstop at Santa Monica High School.

Re: Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

i dont really care how good he was at college. When he played the role, he looked too much like a Hollywood Celeberty big time star for the role imo.

I think if they used someone more ordinary looking and grittier it would have been more than a baseball movie.

Re: Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

Yeah, see they put big stars in movies so people will recognize them and go see the movie, which you seem to have an issue with.

Re: Never bought Robert Redford as a baseball player

i don't have an issue with that. I have an issue with him not looking the part. I think if it was someone else, someone that matched the character in looks, it would have been a classic movie instead of a classic baseball movie.
