sunset boulevard

I get melancholy if I don't write. I need the company of people who don't exist.

Pimpin gets it right!

Now, I don't whether these lines were written by the three scriptwriters -- Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder and D.M. Marshman Jr. -- or whether they were improvised by Erich von Stroheim. Von Stroheim had a certain perverse streak and the reference to auto-asphyxiation with a pair of silk stockings seems right up his alley. If you watch the extras on the Criterion DVD of "Sunset Boulevard" you will learn that Stroheim suggested to Billy Wilder that there be a scene of him washing Norma Desmond's undies in the film! (Billy put the kibosh on that suggestion.)
