The Walking Dead : Most influential books ever written?
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Your choices are good. The Bible is foremost. Das Kapital is second. The Koran too, though it's derivative of the Bible.
The Wealth of Nations, meh, it didn't spawn capitalism. I hate when it's compared theoretically to Das Kapital because Marx created something new. The Wealth of Nations is just an apology for a system which evolved on its own.
I'd say Shakespeare's entire body of plays are up there as well, definitely ahead of The Wealth of Nations.
Mao's Little Red Book is another one.

Re: Most influential books ever written?
Nossir! W of Nations consolidated and clarified, and influenced everyone! To this day influential economists like Friedman go back to it. I'm not saying I approve of its influence, but I can't deny it. Even Marx keeps referring back to it.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
The Scientology books too.
But I'd rather talk about books that were most influential to us as individuals. Mine would probably be bruce coville's 'how i survived my summer vacation' (the first book in the camp haunted hills series). Definitely helped develop young bee's humor and appreciation for meta stuff because there were tons of easter eggs to other books he wrote that i was already a fan of.

You're telling me! I watched the show with leah remini and was obsessed for a while lol
Re: Most influential books ever written?
They do have some good ideas. I've been cornered by Scientologists on Hollywood Boulevard before. But they're also crazy!

Re: Most influential books ever written?
They're ideas are good but there's zero follow through. I used to say that all religions sound crazy and no one should judge Scientology just because they're different. But the organization is corrupt beyond redemption. They're doing some real shady stuff -and that's coming from someone who already thinks most organized religions are shady lol

Fuckin' snob! I meant popular books that influenced you almost under the radar. Who ever read Milton for pleasure before doing an MA in English?
Re: Most influential books ever written?
I read Milton on my own during my Christian/Satanic period. Great book. Lol.
My favorite novel is James Baldwin's Another Country. Important book.

I love Milton, but only came to love him after I started teaching him. I haven't read that particular Baldwin. I loved The Fire Next Time and Notes of a Native Son.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
So it's true, you're an English professor? I'm impressed. If I could do it over I would buckle down and get a PhD.

Re: Most influential books ever written?
Lots of people in their 50s and 60s doing Ph.D.s. Not that hard.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
The books that most influenced me, were written by Alan Watts. - Philosophy. I still have them all.
Also, 'Look Younger, Live Longer' by Gaylord Hauser. The best health book I've ever read.
The book that can always make me cry, no matter how many times I read it is 'The Snow Goose' by Paul Gallico.

Re: Most influential books ever written?
My favorite health book is 'how not to die' by michael gregger. I got the cookbook too lol
Re: Most influential books ever written?
The cookbook helps you to accumulate cholesterol and the health book helps you avoid it? Nice!
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Exactly! His youtube channel is really great too. He goes through tons of medical journals and studies and whenever he brings stuff up he always sites who did the study and who funded it -which i think is really responsible.
I watch his stuff religiously.
This was the shortest video i could find
It's all plant based but the cookbook is super tasty stuff.

Re: Most influential books ever written?
I do too.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Bible, Koran, Augustine's The City of God, Wealth of Nations, The Book of Mormon, Das Kapital, Baby and Child Care by Benjamin Spock, The Feminine Mystique, Atlas Shrugged, Silent Spring.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Spock! of course! My sister wore out her copy of it when she had her first kid. She also wore out Linda Goodman's Star Signs! I did think of Augustine and Aquinas, but I think more people had these books paraphrased for them than read them themselves. I may be wrong. I just bought a copy of The Feminine Mystique!
Re: Most influential books ever written?
The Book of MormonAre you LDS? I have enormous respect for Mormon theory, the most intelligent religion ever invented.

No, but I tend to respect their missionaries, having seen them in action in Colombia. Just don't ever want to be one of them.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Nor I, though I almost went on a mission. It's a fascinating religion which explains every facet of Christianity and brings it to a rational whole. And I say that as an atheist.

Re: Most influential books ever written?
Not exactly books but Euclid's Elements and the writings of Aristotle and Plato.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Good choices. Maybe Newton's Principia and Galileo's Starry Messenger and the Dialogue Concerning the Two World systems too?
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Yeah, even though their direct influence was probably relatively short-lived. Science moves too fast for those to be anything other than historical curiosities for long. They changed the world but nobody reads them anymore.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Any of the Judy Blume books.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Yassssss
Re: Most influential books ever written?
On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Yep. Changed everything, that book.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Actually Darwin's is a good one which we all forgot and I'm finally impressed by something that guy posted.

What's incredible though is, despite most people understanding the principle of evolution, very few understand the principle of natural selection.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
I really liked the painted veil because its female protagonist was ditzy and shallow but became better. Having a lead character that was unlikable, especially a woman seems risky. But i really connected with her when i read it in my early 20s.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
The bible lol. Influential to the retarded, yes.
Re: Most influential books ever written?
Religion is the opium of the masses, eh?
Re: Most influential books ever written?
You miss the point entirely. The Bible is influential because it shaped Western society, not because anybody believes it's factual.

A Wrinkle in Time
When the kids traveled to the evil planet to rescue their father. The evil mind turned all the people into drones. They all walked in the same rhythm, speed and motion. The food they are wasn't real. It was food made of artificial food products and flavors, additives and food subsitutes like what McDonalds serves its customers. The evil mind tricked them into believing what they were eating was tasty. But that only occurred if it had you under its hypnosis. And apparently the evil mind could control your thoughts and memories.
I don't know why I was obsessed with that book. It was an okay story until someone tried making a replica of it in real life. It's just as terrifying as I remember reading in the novel.
