I Love Lucy : Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

Lucy lived in a perpetual state of fear of punished by her husband. She’d always have to hide things.

Ricky would try to intimidate Lucy with his “Lucyyyyy…!” And Lucy Would give her trademark “eeek” sound, which back then implied that he was going to discipline her, off camera.

Ricky would spank her on the bottom when she is “naughty.” What man disciplines his wife with spankings on the butt like a child?

Lucy would cry like a baby when she doesn’t get her way. It was like Ricky was caring for a mentally retarded woman with whom he has sex. I wonder if he got disability for her.

They had nothing in common. Your spouse should be like a best friend who shares your hobbies and interests. Lucy knew nothing about Cuban music. Ricky did his own thing. Ricky has a parental relationship with her rather than a friend.

Re: Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

Really? I never saw it that way at all. I always thought it was a sitcom involving a wacky married couple and their relationship with their semi- normal married friends.

Re: Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

You just overthink everything. You can’t look at a 1950s sitcom through a 2020 lens. Comedy about spousal abuse wasn’t taboo at the time. Interracial couples on tv were, which is what made the show so groundbreaking.

Re: Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

Oh snap Erica. I think I get his point. I saw a video from Lucille Ball interview. She did not have a lot of nice things to say about Desi. I'm not going to summarize this for you. Watch these videos

Re: Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

That is an impressive family overall. They have done good work in the show business.

Re: Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

EricaRene-Price, I would not call them an "interracial" couple. Desi Arnaz was white.

Re: Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

True, he was Cuban, just not Anglo-Saxon white

Interracial relationships are taboo today in 2022 America. In the 1950s, Interracial relationships were completely illegal and could provoke violence/lynchings.

The CBS Jews certainly didn't consider Desi to be white as they refused to cast him and wanted to replace Desi with an "American" (aka non-Hispanic white). This is not surprising as white-Jews have always hated Spanish people since 1492.

They got away with a lot in those days.

Yeah, their BDSM dungeon was not for the faint of heart.

Once you have seen them in matching ball gags, that is something you can never unsee!

I agree with you because this is one of my socks.

Re: Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

Goes to show how appalling parent/child relationships are that they're permeated with stuff which if happening to anyone else it's "creepy" I am not comfortable with treating children in such a way were if you treated anyone else that way it's an outrage.

This shows what it's like when a minority (eg. women) which we're conditioned to see as "equal" is treated like those we aren't, shows just how crappy we treat ourselves when young as a species which is the reason everyone has psychological and personality disorders. I bet it was stressful for Lucy to always be hiding things and worrying, stress isn't good for the brain let alone a developing one, actually it's WAY worse than people realise.

So what if it was slightly resembling the disdain and condescension and to borrow your word "creepiness" of a parent/child relationship? it was a different time clearly, it started in '51 for Christ sake I'd be surprised if it did resemble the mores/norms of today back then women didn't just have to endure degrading assault for the first one (or two) decades of their lives but it was more acceptable (still not as much as when they're little and defenceless as it was illegal after all) for them to suffer it longer, times change, people are the most inconsistent creatures and what's "logical" or "ethical" today will be madness tomorrow or just in another geographic location because people are hive minds when it comes to ethics or what's appropriate and influenced by their peers/background NOT rational unbiase judgment.

Re: Lucy and Ricky’s relationship was creepy

LOL! When all is said and done, Lucy ruled that household!
I agree though… the Op is looking at the 50s situation through a present day lense.
