Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

Does this mean Code Red somehow finally got their hands on the original negative??

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

I hope you meant to say "original interpositive". Since internegatives are used for striking prints, at the very least, they should strike a new one from the direct negative. I suspect an "original" internegative is probably not in the best of shape in this day and age.

At least with an interpositive, you only have to worry about color-timing and applying just the right amount of DNR, among other things. But since an interpositive is never used for print copying and is also a first-generation from the camera negative, using the interpositive would truly be "the next best thing".

Just my two cents.

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

The Shriek Show disc had terrific extras. It's just a shame the print they chose to use. I don't think I've ever seen a DVD before that was mastered off a theatrical print with that much loss of footage around the reel changes. In earlier times, a print in that condition would have been melted down for the silver content.

Anyone know if Lieberman's 102(?) minute director's cut will be included as an extra? I have no idea if good quality 35mm elements of it exist anymore (I've heard the Hreljanovics cut the negative in accordance with their 91 minute release cut) but even a U-Matic transfer of it would be appreciated. I watched the fan composite that somebody made by pasting together the Paragon VHS with the Odeon DVD and I think that's a much better version of the film. And thank you to the person who took the time to put that together.

I guess this isn't really happening, is it?

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

Word on the proverbial street is that it is happening, but the release date has yet to be determined. There was a guy (a legit source I was told) not too long ago actually taking pre-orders on eBay for the blu ray... so don't give up hope yet.

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

Yeah, the person at Code Red said it's still on the schedule. Just heard back.

Here's hoping.

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

I'm really confused because as far as I had read, this was limited to 1,000 copies, which I assumed were gone by the time I was aware the release even happened (last month). I was on eBay though and Code Red's store on there was selling a small number of them, and I immediately bought one. They were all gone within a matter of a couple of days. So was there really only 1,000 pressings? Amazon doesn't even have the Blu-ray for this film in their catalogue, which is also really bizarre because most of Code Red's releases are on there.

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

I don't think the blu is sold out; Bill (owner of Code Red) recently admitted on another forum to be undergoing some personal difficulties which has forced him to enact a temporary embargo on his store. He removed all but a few listings (including Ebay) and even withheld international shipping.

It doesn't appear that he has everything sorted out yet, but I am aware that several copies of some of the aforementioned pulled copies have surfaced on Ebay (presumably when/where you saw JBD relisted.) By all appearances, stock is available, he's just selling it in limited quantities.

It was never available on Amazon either for some odd reason.

None of this really matters to me because I bit the bullet and bought just a couple of months ago, just saying.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, I just checked to see if Bill's direct sale is up and running, and lo and behold, several recent blus including JBD (at original MSRP) are currently there. What'd I tell ya?

RE-EDIT: I took a closer look and they all have a big red SOLD OUT disclaimer at the bottom. So who the hell knows anymore.

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

Code Red is a mystery to me and always has been. I remember having a hell of a time trying to order Ghostkeeper from their online store when that came out— I think their site linked me to another site and I had to pay for the DVD through the other website or something. It was really weird.

As far as the Blu-ray goes, it's GORGEOUS. I didn't realize how nice it was until today when I found a copy of the Shriek Show DVD at a used movie store and watched some of it for comparison. The Code Red print is amazing, which I guess shouldn't be a surprise since it's been scanned from original negatives, but still. It really makes the Shriek Show DVD look like crap. That said, I'm not going to get rid of the DVD, because it has some really great bonus features that Code Red's release doesn't have (commentary and a documentary being the biggest). Those two things alone were worth the $15 I spent on the DVD. As nice as the Code Red Blu-ray looks, it is a shame that there are no bonus features to speak of (aside from the extended cut and a trailer).

I also picked up Code Red's "Nightmare" Blu-ray in the same order, because I knew that it, along with JBD would both be gone quick, and it looks like I was right. I love Code Red for releasing these films, but their exclusivity on releases is frustrating, and not to mention creates a ticket-scalping sort of atmosphere where people wheel and deal their discs to us desperate fans.

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

Funnily enough, I spent exactly $15 on the Shriek Show DVD, which I won in an Ebay bid literally the day before the blu was announced. I retained the second disc and moved everything into a double-sided blu case for a nice package (I don't listen to commentaries so the mucky first disc has no value for me.)

I double-dipped because I couldn't pass up having that Oregon wilderness in glorious hi-def, plus I knew that it'd soon be a rare collector's item.

I agree that Code Red's blu presentation is amazing. You encounter nitpicking from spec geeks about CR's decision to "cram" two cuts on one disc, but I'm not sure how much better it would have looked with a higher bitrate.

Code Red's business model is, um, unique to say the least. But I can get down with them over other botique labels like, say, Twilight Time for a couple of reasons: a) TT's ethos seems to be re-releasing films that already have wide availablity in solid editions, sans extras. CR takes the time to put stuff out that most other companies wouldn't touch (usually with a decent heap of extras), and thus curries favor with the obscure/cult crowd. b) Bill is essentially a one-man outfit, and while I think he's guilty of inflating the prices of his items, he can be hit very hard if he doesn't at least break even on releases. c) CR is better-priced.

I've flirted with the idea of the Nightmare blu purely because of its inevitable rarity, but unlike some of this other stuff, I just do not think that movie is nearly worth that kind of money.

Re: Just Before Dawn To Blu-Ray….FINALLY!!!

Haha, weird! Yeah, I just got the Shriek Show DVD yesterday. I recently upgraded to Blu-ray (I was resistant), and I'm switching out a lot of my DVDs for the Blu-ray counterparts, so I've been making trips to a local trade shop for that. There are some DVDs though that I can't pass up (and others that I won't get rid of), and the Just Before Dawn set was one of them.

I've never even heard of Twilight Time, but it sounds kind of bogus. I used to be a big fan of Anchor Bay's releases back in the day, but they seem to have dropped all their horror titles (sans Dawn of the Dead and Halloween) and passed them on to Shout Factory and Blue Underground. I have a pretty big collection of some of their original discs though, and certain ones are pretty rare (I Saw What You Did, Hell Night, etc.)

I'm really impressed by Code Red's picture here though— it's a movie that has so much visual flair and it's nice to see it so clean and crisp. I'm from Portland and live only an hour from the forest where they filmed the movie, so I'm planning on making a trip there this summer for a hike! Weirdly enough, I've never actually been there before, but it looks amazing.

As for Nightmare, I couldn't resist getting it just because of what you said— its inevitable rarity. Truth be told I'm not sure how much I ENJOYED the movie, but I did like it. It kind of made me feel filthy after watching it. I have the 2 disc DVD set from Code Red as well, but I don't think I'm going to get rid of it because there are different prints/features between the two.
