What does the G7 do? It seems choreographed, like all they do is get together and announce a joint action that had already been agreed to before the meeting. Has the G7 ever played a necessary role in anything?

Arguably, debatably, yes.
There were times after economic crises when the coordinated messaging and high-level political signaling was helpful. And there were some coordinated efforts that came of that direction, like debt relief for the poorest countries some 20 years ago or so.

It's not relevant because only the United States is relevant. The other countries are unnecessary.

The US, a key if not the key country, used to support international action; today many Americans hold more isolationist views.
Should we look to more expansive fora to include countries with more economic heft, such as the G20? Or should the G7 move to become more of an alliance of liberal democracies, so start including countries like India, Australia, South Korea?
