Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope : Is it a plothole that…

Is it a plothole that…

Vader didn't know that Leia was his daughter? No "force sense" of it when she was in his custody, not even when she was recaptured in Empire. You would think that'd drop something, anything that was a special connection between them. This is especially telling since Yoda, "there's another" when Luke goes flying off.

Come to think of it Leia's been screwed big time in the Jedi department. She Luke's friggin twin and she's never done any psychic things or even held a light saber. Han has used one and she hasn't. Before the new saga movies are done they have to give Carrie Fisher one saber fight. C'mon the girl is 30 years over due.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

Princess Leia wasn't related to Darth Vader in Star Wars. That didn't happen until Return of the Jedi.

And Yoda's line "there is another" wasn't supposed to be Leia in Empire Strikes Back, when he said it. The "another" was a yet-to-be introduced Jedi.

Wrong.

It happened in Empire Strikes Back when Luke called out Leia's name hanging on the Cloud City weathervane antennae; "Leia!".. John Williams excellent "ways of the force" soundtrack plays, and Leia looks up and stares, knowing exactly where Luke is and that he needs help. <--This originally happened in 1980, in the original theatrical version of the Empire Strikes Back playing at theaters.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

Yes, but just because they have that connection doesn't mean it insinuated they were siblings. Obviously it's open to interpretation, but personally I don't think it was intended for them to be siblings until Jedi. Remember, Luke and Leia were potential love interests due to Ford's wanting his character to be killed off.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

So "there is another," refers to the same person Luke was told not to save?

In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

He was not told to not save her. He was advised to not leave before his training was complete.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

But didn't Leia use force powers at the end of Empire to find where Luke was after his fight with Vader? I could be remembering wrong.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

Perhaps if she is not using the force then it cannot be sensed

Re: Is it a plothole that…

I think it is this.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

same reason the Jedi couldn't sense Sidious when he was right under their noses.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

No its not the same, like at all

Re: Is it a plothole that…

Lucas has said Leia being his daughter was never thought of til "Jedi".

Re: Is it a plothole that…

Leia wasn't originally going to be Luke's sister. At one point Lucas was planning for episodes 7,8,9 to feature Boba Fett as the main villain (or at least a major one), with Luke also setting out to find a long lost sister. As production went on with Empire and Jedi, Lucas grew more tired and less enthused about the idea of another three movies. So he scrapped the idea of a new trilogy and put whatever he could from those ideas in to Jedi, or did what he could to tie them off. That's why Boba dies so abruptly, that's why Leia is just Luke's sister now out of no where.

It wasn't all planned from the beginning like Lucas sometimes likes to claim.

True, it was pretty much made up as the series progressed. This is evident in the MANY plot holes throughout all the movies, not just the one mentioned here

Re: Is it a plothole that…

She's just a headstrong women who's connection to the force is more mind than physical. She was never trained in Jedi practices and would likely find all that time away to do so a distraction from her Princess or General(TFA) duties. A New Hope makes it obvious she is very stubborn but brave and commanding. Not Jedi ways but strong character traits. She wouldn't adapt to Jedi training as Luke barely did.

"Come to think of it Leia's been screwed big time "

Leia had the comfort of being raised in a lush planet as a Princess, Luke got to be a farmer in a sh!thole like Tatooine.

The way I see it, it's Luke who got screwed.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

You kinda proved it wasn't a plothole here. Vader didn't know Leia was his daughter because she wasn't a force user.

Vader sensed Obi-Wan's presence because he's fricking Obi-Wan, a high-powered force-using beast even as an old man.

I also think there's something to be said for how the force works before and after the individual realizes they have it. Like, had Luke never met Obi-Wan and learned about the force, yet somehow ended up in an X-wing going up against the Death Star, would Vader still have detected his force strength? It's possible that it was detectable by other force users only after Luke had begun to tap into it. Leia never even tried to tap into it in any of the films. So either she was screwed in the Jedi department like you said, or it was also a matter of simply choosing not to be a force user.

If you can read this then you are trying too hard.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

I always thought Leia was 'strong with the force' only never had the opportunity to have it cultivated by Jedi training (as Luke was before he learnt from Obi-Wan or Anakin before he met Qui-Gon).
Vader, on first encountering Luke, remarked "the force is strong with this one", but did not at that time know who he was. (It was only after Luke's fame as the hero of the battle that Vader made the connection - Luke's surname would have been a big hint!)
Vader is perspicacious, but not omniscient.

Re: Is it a plothole that…

perspicacious

ooh, word of the day!

"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"
