This was a topic of debate on British radio this week, and an argument being put forward was that he isn't 'NEGRO' enough-I.e. he isn't 'culturally significant' like Ali or Woods.

Yeah, he's one of the greatest American sportsmen. Definitely in the top 25 of all time. Dude's probably got the most accomplished career out of any quarterback except for Otto Graham. Has 7 Super Bowls, 5 Super Bowl MVPs, 3 NFL MVPs, broke the passing touchdown record in 2007, and still played like a Hall of Famer well into his 40s.

But he's still looking up at quite a lot of athletes in the rankings. I guess that's due to a lack of cultural significance – though I'd hesitate to say that's because of his skin color. Athletes like Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Bruce Jenner, Jack Nicklaus, Michael Phelps, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Arnold Palmer definitely moved the cultural needle quite a bit. They all maintained larger-than-life public personas and were idolized by legions of people. Granted, a lot of them are baseball players and played during a time when baseball players were more famous than movie stars in America.

Tom Brady just suffered from having a bland personality. If he was someone with the level of charisma and swagger as Joe Namath and still accomplished all that he did, I reckon he'd be much more of a culturally significant person as opposed to just being simply a great quarterback.
