Classic Film : I just saw an instant favorite

I just saw an instant favorite

I can't believe I never saw this until last night. It's John Huston after all~

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Hate boxing.
Don't care for it.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

This has much about boxing as Forrest Gump had to do with football.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Forrest Chump played football for two minutes or less.

If this Wiki description is true then this looks like it has a lot more boxing than that movie had about football.

Billy Tully, a boxer past his prime, goes to a gym in Stockton, California to get back into shape and spars with Ernie Munger, an 18 year-old he meets there. Seeing potential in the youngster, Tully suggests that Munger look up his former manager and trainer Ruben. Tully later tells combative barfly Oma and her easygoing boyfriend Earl how impressed he is with the kid. Newly inspired, Tully decides to get back into boxing himself.

Tully's life has been a mess since his wife left him. He drinks too much, cannot hold a job, and picks fruit and vegetables with migrant workers to make ends meet. He still blames Ruben for mishandling his last fight.

Tully tries moving in with Oma after Earl is sent to prison for a few months, but their relationship is rocky.

Munger loses his first fight, his nose broken, and he is knocked out in his next bout as well. He gets pressured into marriage by Faye because a baby's on the way, so he picks fruit in the fields for a few dollars.

For his first bout back, Tully is matched against a tough Mexican boxer named Lucero, who is of an advanced age and in considerable pain. They knock each other down before Tully is declared the winner. His celebration is brief when Tully discovers that he will be paid only $100, which causes him to end his business relationship with Ruben. He then returns to Oma's apartment and finds Earl there. Earl, still paying the rent, assures him that the alcoholic Oma wants nothing more to do with Tully.

Munger is returning home from a fight one night when he sees Tully drunk in the street. Munger tries to ignore him, but when Tully asks to have a drink, he reluctantly agrees to coffee. The two men sit and drink, and Tully looks around at all the people immediately around him, all of whom now seem at an impassable distance. Munger says he needs to leave, but Tully asks him to stay to talk a while. Munger agrees, and the two men sit drinking their coffee together in silence.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

lol, it's more prevalent but it's more about relationships and how life constantly kicks you in the butt.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Kinda like Rocky?

I like that movie up until the big fight.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

yes, Rocky was a low-budget indie

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Ok, Mort.

If you like early 70's underrated movies of "Down on their luck and losing to the establishment guys" types with ambiguous endings you might like this one.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

I liked this movie a lot. You'd think with Pacino coming off The Godfather and Hackman winning an Oscar this would be more popular but it's not. Maybe you or someone else can explain this.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Maybe you or someone else can explain this.

In my layman opinion I suspect it has to do with marketing, box office money and if it was an Oscar contender as well as word of mouth.

Good to know that you also saw and liked that underrated gem.
I got it last Christmas and am very pleased that I did.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

I liked Scarecrow, haven't seen it in years

I like "Scarecrow" a lot.

Yes! According to her profile page her last credit was in 2001

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Yes, I have seen that one a couple times. It is an excellent, creepy tv movie. Charles Durning did a very good job in his disturbed, sick character.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

I love him. He was so cute in Tootsie

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Awww… Yes, he was. The way he falls for Dorothy was kind of precious. Of course, Dorothy's increasingly nervous state was hilarious.

Poor guy. He was eating a sandwich when the soap opera was on and missed his mouth during the reveal

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

As soon as I started watching that clip I got a big smile right at the start when Dorothy is standing at the top of the stairs.

Such a classic and endearing film! To my mind, should have won best pic over Gandhi.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Very good flick. Bill Murray was good as always "You slut!"

Jessica was so pretty. If she hadn't been a heavy smoker and protected her skin from the sun, she would still look great

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Every character was spot on, every moment is a delight and it was nice seeing Lange here after the harrowing Frances in which she gave it her all.

Sydney Pollack pretty much steals the film as well in his small role Dorsey's agent.

Now, is that Emily Kimberly, Dorothy Michaels, Micheal Dorsey or Dustin Hoffman as Tootsie?

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

I agree, Sydney Pollack was great

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

I watched The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas - 82' the other day. Durning had a fun and playful minor role as the Govnor' of Texas and he sang and danced a little ditty. Durning and DeLuise were the best thing in the film.

He got an Oscar nomination for it, yet he was even better as Julie's father Les in Tootsie from the same year.

I wonder why he was singled out for Whorehouse and not Tootsie

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

I agree. He was more appealing and gave the better performance in "Tootsie". My favorite part about BLWIT is Dom Deluise. He always made me laugh.

I have just added that bit to my post. On the ball again Mr. Hutch…

I think Whorehouse is pretty meh overall. It needed to be racier and raunchier. Even Parton didn't appear to have the same spunk she possessed in Nine To Five.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

I watched it about five years ago with a bunch of gay guys. They all loved it and sang along with all the numbers and I was not reacting to it in the same way and it gave me a feeling of being isolated.

In reference to your post about Lily Tomlin in "9 to 5", Dolly's warmth and overall "dolliness" made up for her sometimes seeming kind of out of it. But she delivered where it counted. I sometimes forgot that Jane Fonda was there.

I also liked the Missy Hart character and Grace Foster, aka "the old lush"

"Atta girl!"

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Whorehouse film is missing a little something overall and by then, audiences were used to raunchier stuff, what with Animal House, Porky's, Last American Virgin, et all. It tried to be too cutesy as well.

Interesting comment about being isolated, because that is what the setting can invoke, but something like Texas Chainsaw Massacre doesn't really give off that vibe, or if it does, it makes it work to its full advantage.

Would you mind putting your Tomlin comments on my 9 to 5 post Mr. H, It will give it a bump.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Great movie. Stacy Keach's performance is one of the best I've ever seen.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Stacy Keach and Susan Tyrell are both excellent. And I remember back in the day frequenting those seedy neighborhood bars. Those days are mostly long gone, but there are some interesting people who go to those places!

Like in the movie Barfly

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Oh, for sure! I think that's one of Faye's best performances. I don't recall her usual tendency for the high emotions as "Wanda"! "Wanda" is a cool ladies' name!

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

You can see faye's beautiful tits in a few movies.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Ever see the movie "Wanda" by Barbara Loden? I don't think it was great or anything, but I like movies like that and had she lived longer I'm sure she would have made some excellent movies. I admire anyone who can make a decent movie while writing and starring.

Ever see "Buffalo '66" – probably the most unique and funny movie I ever saw. In my Top 10.

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

I saw "Wanda". Pauline Kael gave it a somewhat favorable review. And while I would never call it a bad movie, I don't think I could ever watch it again.

Poor Wanda. Talk about a person with no direction in their life. The saddest part is this is one of mankind's biggest problems.

Without me looking it up, wasn't Loden married to Elia Kazan?

Re: I just saw an instant favorite

Yeah, Kazan actually slighted her saying Barbara used her sexuality to get what she wanted.
