Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

i'm a vegan but i'm really not one of those kinds of vegans

i've had people on the internet tell me that i can't really say i'm vegan technically because i go to the zoo, and i'd wear fur if it's vintage. i've got a badass leather jacket that peta can pry from my cold dead hands. i've eaten eggs off and on too because we have a bunch of chickens and cook with the eggs on occasion. but i don't eat anything else animal related

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

I love chickens, our neighbor used to have them but the people behind them complained because they attract rats

I loved hearing the little rooster crow

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

Rats? i hope we don't get rats. I haven't seen any but we have cats so maybe they've been keeping them away

I love chickens. When mr bee got them i thought they were going to be nasty and terrible lol. But they're hilarious and not shy of people at all so i love them now

I want to get a rooster to hear it crow! Right now we just have hens

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

They make sweet pets

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

My son-in-law is a Vegan and literally evertime I cook something for the family he says "Is it Vegan? Can I eat it?" this makes Mr.Dazed roll his eyes and mutter dark things under his breath!

I do actually get a kick out of trying to adapt recipes and veganize them so I try to pre-empt the conversation by making it Vegan and announcing it loudly to all before we eat.

I have a sneaking suspicion that he doesn't really like vegetables much, he seems to exist on bread and cheerios.

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

Lol that would be annoying! But it's super sweet of you to make stuff for him.

Sometimes i get really into cooking and i like trying to find vegan substitute for things too. i made these "lobster rolls" using heart of palm instead of lobster and i thought it was perfect but mr bee isn't a vegan and he was like "…it's ok. It's been a long time since you had lobster" lol but hey, it worked for me

I have a sneaking suspicion that he doesn't really like vegetables much, he seems to exist on bread and cheerios.
he probably does. When people are like "omg you must be so healthy!" I'm always like…yes *hides oreos and soda* lol i try to eat better now that I'm older though

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

Yes!! So good

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

I'd imagine it comes down to what you mix it up with, right? What is in the "dressing" that you toss it with?

I would definitely be down with giving that a go to see what it tastes like. As someone who eats lobster, I wonder if I'd know the difference? To be fair, even knowing it was vegan, I'd still be game (no pun intended).

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

I think it's mostly vegan mayo but you chop up a ton of onions and celery, and spice it up with dill and garlic. I put a bunch of lemon in it to make it tangy. It's pretty good!

I think you would be able to tell the difference because the consistency is still a little different but it's still good!

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

I'd like to try it because it looks really good. I'd consider myself mostly vegetarian but I do eat meat on occasion, like today I ate turkey. Everything else was vegetarian, but I felt the desire to eat turkey (perhaps I was influenced by either being a Yankee or all the commercials or just our New England history, lol).

Regardless, (I know it's not the same thing) I'm primarily a vegetarian, but once in a great while I'll eat meat, just not very often. I'm completely open to trying new things, and I'm not put off by anything being "vegan" just because it's "vegan" by all means.

I like trying new things!

Where do you get your recipes from?

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

I totally get that lol. It's tradition. I wasn't even crazy about turkey when i ate meat but i still feel like I'm missing out during the holidays lol.

I think is cool that you don't want to put it down just because it's vegan. I think some people are just immediately put off by it -but i get it, there are a lot of preachy vegans lol.

I get most of the recipes off pinterest. I'll look at food pages on instagram but i get so frustrated because they hardly ever give directions. It's just a delicious looking picture and i have no idea how to make it lol

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

It's a damn shame to all of those nice vegans who don't make a fuss about their lifestyles.

As rare as meeting a nice feminist

Ding Dong! 🤡🌎

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

If a vegan doesn't "make a fuss about their lifestyle," then they're only vegan for health and dietary reasons, and not because they believe not eating plant-based diet is committing an ethical crime. If they believe the latter, they'd want to spread the word; that is, in fact, the whole point: they don't want others committing these crimes.

Ethical crimes are represented in our laws. No one says, "I'm against murder, but it is not our place to tell others to to murder. I'm against slave ownership, but it is not my place to tell others not to own slaves." Some issues are so important, that we want to force them on others.

Christians do this. They fear for people's souls, so they tell non-believers.

Eating flesh is not one's choice - it infringes on the consent of someone else: the animals who did not consent to be enslaved, tortured, and killed to become one's flesh. Let alone, innocent animals never convicted of a crime.

If someone has a belief on an economic or social issue, then the goal here is to share it with others. Otherwise, there is no point in having the belief.

If a politician believes health care is a right, they're going to try to tax-based health care. If someone believes climate change is destroying the world, they're going to try for more green energy solutions worldwide. If someone believes abortion is killing children, they're going to try to outlaw it. Keeping it to themselves misses the point of having a strong conviction in something.

Feminists as you point out believe women are treated unfairly compared to men and want to change that - it'd make absolutely no sense for someone to be a feminist and not be vocal about it: "Yeah I'm a feminist but it's not my place to tell others how to treat women." Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. You can't change it if you don't talk about it.

Monster, how should I feel? Creatures lie here, looking through the window.

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

We have our differences and I believe there is nothing ethically wrong with killing an animal for food. But you do have a very seamless and logical argument. That's why I wish you weren't such a jackass. You could be a great poster if you had the same ethics about people that you do about chickens and rats.

Why are you entertaining his false equivalence rants . This is all PE does. He makes comparisons that don’t equate to anyone with a functioning brain.

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

How is there any false equivalency in this argument:

Ethical crimes are represented in our laws. No one says, "I'm against murder, but it is not our place to tell others to to murder. I'm against slave ownership, but it is not my place to tell others not to own slaves." Some issues are so important, that we want to force them on others.

He's giving the case for political advocacy among vegans.

I disagree with him. But it's logical.

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

It isn’t logical. Chickens and cows are not people, we cannot apply equal treatment under the law to unequal animals. He’s comparing murder and enslavement of other people to consumption of chickens and pigs for food. There’s nothing logical about it. It’s a tired argument used by moralizing vegans who largely know nothing about nutrition. Human beings are omnivores. The structure of our teeth and jaw have evolved to accommodate eating both meat and plant foods. We need both meat and vegetables in our diets with few exceptions based on immune deficiencies.

"You had me at Elk Tartare"
-Erin Wotherspoon

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

I just said I see nothing wrong with slaughtering and eating animals.

He's saying that if you truly believe that raising animals for slaughter is wrong, then you are ethically required to actively oppose it just as you would oppose murder or slavery. That was the issue.

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

Again , my point stands. His comparison is of unequal things therefore I dismiss the attempt at ethical equivalence.

Since were comparing Pigs and chickens with human beings why not elect them to congress too? They’ll get a 2nd stimulus passed about as quickly as McConnell will so why not?

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

Oh please, I've trounced PE on the issue of animal rights a hundred times. I'd eat your dog if he was properly prepared by a good chef.

His argument was not about health. It was about political advocacy. If you truly believe meat is murder, then you better be out there trying to stop it.

If PE wrote a paper using that argument in my last undergrad nutrition class he would get an automatic F. Everyone thinks they’re an expert until they meet one.

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

PE is talking politics and advocacy, not nutrition. He supports animal rights. I think animals are dumb brutes we kill for any good purpose which helps human beings. I'm referring to his ethical belief that if you think meat is murder, you are required to stop it. Sheesh you're dense today.

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

Naw , it’s you who is denser than Hadrian’s wall. The ethics of animal consumption is always discussed in nutrition classes. I know full well what point he’s trying to make and he’s not making it well. You just blindly defend whatever nonsense PE throws out there to play devil’s advocate.

You also sprinkle in your own anti-science ( like you’re meat rotting bs) for good measure and then disappear when I correct you. 😉

There's HDL and LDL. Lumping "cholesterol" into just the total number is ineffective. Taking triglycerides into account is important. Each form of cholesterol affects the body differently.

Some people are genetically predisposed for higher (or lower) total numbers or ratios, true. But the HDL and LDL numbers need to be looked at individually.

Right but we’re talking about the dietary affects and there is tenuous if any link between dietary Cholesterol and heart disease risk. “Cholesterol in food is bad” , has always been a widely repeated myth not substantiated by research into a connection.

Re: How can you tell if someone is Vegan?

He’s comparing murder and enslavement of other people to consumption of chickens and pigs for food.

I'm comparing the killing and enslavement and human animals to the killing and enslavement of nonhuman animals.

If we were killing human animals for the consumption of food, would it make a difference?

Is it because they're being killed for food that makes a difference, or the because they're not the human species? Or both?

The "compare" argument is false reasoning. The person using it assumes that x is different than y, without explaining why it is different. This is an argumentum ad populum.

Person 1: The same should not be done to X as it is to Y.

Person 2: You're comparing X to Y? You're crazy!

Person 2 did not refute Person 1's argument by the simple opinion that Y is different than X.

If two people were arguing slavery before the Civil War, the opposition could say:

He’s comparing murder and enslavement of white people to ownership of negroes and women for labour. There’s nothing logical about it. It’s a tired argument used by moralizing abolitionist who largely know nothing about human rights. The structure of our society and industrialisation have evolved to accommodate the necessary labour of slaves.

The actual act is the same. The only thing that is different is how we perceive the justification of the act because of culture, tradition and the status quo, by which the morality and practices of humankind are heavily influenced.

We need both meat and vegetables in our diets with few exceptions based on immune deficiencies.

Humans don't need meat in their diet at all.

The human digestive is a self-cleaning and regulating system. Eating meat does not taint your digestive tract. You think eating dead animals is a danger but somehow eating rotting dead plants is somehow safer?

What nutrition courses did you and PE take to confirm these opinions?

Uhuh. We all know cholesterol clogs the arteries. We all know healthcare professionals advise us to limit to the consumption of red meat. Eating less meat is healthier than eating more. Common sense.

No one ever died from eating carrots.

But it's likely the ultimate condition that killed Elvis Presley was constipation. Now you may laugh as you read this, but consider this. The coroner found over 35 pounds of white chalky fecal matter in Elvis' colon at the time of death.
