Re: Great Actor

Tomorrow is another day

Very talented actor in many movies.

Re: Great Actor

Just re-watched THE SPANISH MAIN [1945] with Paul Henreid at his dashing and handsome best.

Re: Great Actor

Henreid was a great actor, it's such a shame that his career was hurt during HUAC's "investigation" into Communism in Hollywood. Although there were few heroes and villains during this time, to deny that some of them were overzealous would be insanity.

Re: Great Actor

He's wonderful. He's charming, urbane, continental, a liberal (in real life), a great actor (LOVED him in both Now Voyager and, even moreso, Decption......that one is a masterpiece of an entertaining film. Just fantastic. I wish more films were made like that one...and starring him.

Re: Great Actor

a liberal (in real life)

According to his autobiography Ladies Man, Paul was apolitical. He avoided politics because he promised his dying father on his deathbed that he would never involve himself with politics.

But things were different in 1947. When Paul heard that the HUAC was completely violating the First Amendment of free speech and freedom of assembly, he was outraged. For the first time in his life, he decided to go against the vow he made towards his father. He joined a group that protested the actions of the HUAC, which included his fellow Hollywood actors/directors Humphrey Bogart, John Garfield and John Huston, and they flew to Washington D.C. to protest. John Huston eventually turned turncoat against the group and wrote that they were betraying their country's ideals. And so Garfield, Henreid and many others were blacklisted from working in major studios in Hollywood. While Paul discovered that he was blacklisted, he felt that breaking his vow was an unwise decision with terrible consequences and he continued to dwell upon the matter for several years afterward.

Re: Great Actor

As for Henreid's acting, I find him quite likable. He was suave and charismatic, but there is also a modesty and sincerity that comes through.

Re: Great Actor

There was an intelligence about Henreid that made him very watchable. There was also a sense of humor there as well as charisma.
