Youth : Fonda was great in this

Fonda was great in this

Happy to see her in a good role again. Her 8-minute scene with Keitel was fantastic, and her freak-out on the plane was one of the high points of the film.

Re: Fonda was great in this

Of course, she's always great! But yes, it's the first quality film she's been in for years. If only she had more screen time.

I loved when Harvey Keitel's character "saw" her without all the glamour, and they intensely locked eyes and she seemed to reveal all kinds of mysteries...a brief moment, and I imagine lots of viewers won't even realise it was her, but I found it very powerful.

That is a masterpiece of understatement.

Re: Fonda was great in this

He saw (envisioned) her as her character in the TV show she told him she was leaving his film for, right? That was a great moment, Sorentino made sure to keep the camera on her face for a few seconds longer. I hope this role gets her another Oscar nomination. Caine, too.

That hadn't occurred to me - I'd forgotten by then that she described the character as a grandma recovering from a stroke - but I watched it back again and you're probably right. But there's definitely depth to it. At first Mick (Keitel) looks at her like "Oh come on, what the hell are you doing", but she stares at him and seems to be saying "This is the reality, Mick. This is what we all are, or become", and then the realisation hits him...That's how I interpret it anyway.

I'd be delighted for Jane to get an Oscar nomination because, as you may tell from my avatar, I'm nuts about her! But it is a brief appearance, so it would be difficult and (if I put aside my bias) maybe a bit unfair...

Re: Fonda was great in this

Absolutely agree! I didnt realise why she was having that meltdown on the plane at first but now realise she has just been told he is dead and intensely rehrets how they parted.

Re: Fonda was great in this

I didn't understand that was the reason for the meltdown either until I read this thread. It makes perfect sense now. I wish Jane Fonda's role had been longer here, but she's more enigmatic during her brief scenes.

Re: Fonda was great in this

She did a great job. You couldn't tell it was her except her voice. She was brave showing her face in a close up. It was an interesting movie. I couldn't figure it out and then when I found out it was Italian It made since like an Italian opera
