Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

I've decided that my favorite film composer is Ennio Morricone. He did The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (and other Dollars Trilogy films), Once Upon a Time in the West (and America), The Sicilian Clan, The Desert of the Tartars, and many more. I think his music is some of the very best. He also did good jazz back in the 1960s and '70s.

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Difficult question that

Howard Shore did a magnificent job with LOTR
Don Davis was brilliant with The Matrix Trilogy
James Horner in Avatar is the only soundtrack that's made me cry

Probably one of those for me

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Hans Zimmer
The Dark Knight
Inception
Batman Begins

My Favorite Movies of All Time: http://www.imdb.com/list/QAC63eYnzU4/

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Hans Zimmer and Howard Shore!!!

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

I like Hans Zimmer except for his scores for Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and Inception. Except for the last piece of music on the Inception soundtrack. That one was amazing. Time.

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Michael Nyman. Especially his scores for early Peter Greenaway movies "The Draughtsmans Contract" and "A Zed and Two Noughts (ZOO)". I noticed horrible, updated versions of tracks from both movies in the recent "Man On Wire",,, alongside the Erik Satie piano pieces.

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

elmer bernstein wrote many a great tune many of them for westerns and a film called stripes and many others

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Yes, Bernstein.

Alfred Newman

George Bassman

Ennio Morricone

Alex North

Hugo Friedhofer

Jerry Goldsmith

.... so many more, obscure or not, discography or not, who steadily built the glorious corpus that is film music ...

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Howard Shore
Hans Zimmer
James Horner

I'm a sucker for the epics.

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

My favorite is John Williams.

Jaws
Star Wars
Superman
Indiana Jones
Black Sunday
Close Encounters
Jaws
E.T.
Jurassic Park

Williams' music perfectly fits my imagination and soul, as well as the movie scenes it was written for. The man is brilliant.

Jerry Goldsmith is right up there with Williams at an almost even tie.

Poltergeist
The Omen
Star Trek-The Motion Picture
Alien
First Blood
Rambo-First Blood-Part II
Rambo III
Patton
Rudy
First Knight
Total Recall (Arnold Schwarzenegger version)
Capricorn One
Outland
Planet of the Apes
The Ghost and the Darkness
Congo

Goldsmith's music is also pretty tight in terms of sync with the picture, and is an equal blend of heartfelt, simple main themes with complex off-rythm and frequently dissonant orchestrations as underscore and intermediate music. Goldsmith tends to lean on percusssion, synth and other bizarre instruments to create a weird cocophony and atmosphere, and it works. And he can SCARE better than anybody (The Omen, Alien, Poltergeist)!

I'm gonna throw in Bernard Hermann as an almost equally effective third.

Psycho
and most of Hitchcock's pictures
It's Alive
Taxi Driver

His music has a FEVERISH quality about it.

And let's not forget:

Maurice Jarre

simply because his magnificent music scored my favorite David Lean films. He painted a vast musical canvas to accompany Lean's vast vistas. Grand, highly romantic.

His music to Ghost is quite beautiful and haunting as well, and his music lends a surreal, atmospheric quality to Witness, Mosquito Coast and many other fine Peter Weir films as well.

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Angelo Badalamenti followed closely by Ennio Morrione.

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Probably in that order.

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

Hans Zimmer
Dario Marianelli
John Williams
Alexandre Desplate
Joe Hisaishi
Danny Elfman
James Horner
James Newton Howard
Ennio Morricone
Howard Shore
Yann Tiersen

Re: Favourite composer of movie scores

I like Hans Zimmer. I haven't really disliked anything I've heard from him. That being said, there are some other good ones too. Michael Kamen, John Williams, James Horner, Danny Elfman. Even Trent Reznor.

The grave is no bar to my call.
