"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

They're coming out with their first album in almost 40 years. I've been hearing about this for almost 20 though, lol

No, I just happen to like those songs.

Going with FWM.

Without strife, your victory has no meaning.
Without strife, you do not advance.
Without strife, there is only stagnation.

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

Black Sabbath - Sabotage
Fairport Convention - Rising for the Moon
AC/DC - High Voltage and T.N.T.
Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

I like Fairport COnvention (and Sandy Denny, Richard/Linda Thompson) but not by album, but I believe that was the album after they broke up. I'll check it out.

Thanks!

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

I listed Red Octopus. I'm a fan of Neil Young, but if I included him, I'd have to add another dozen. I have some Joni Mitchell, always liked "Fat Lady of Limbourg", a couple of songs by Roxy Music.

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

Roxy Music and Brian Eno are among my 10 top ten artists evah.

Neil Young is one of the few non-British rockers I like.

I respect Joni Mitchell but she's too sleepy to listen to.

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

There's a few songs from "Hejira" that I like, about three.. And songs scattered. I started collecting albums in the mid-90s, but then immediately after, came Napster, so I'm more of a song-person.

Joni isn't someone I like. I saw this interview of hers, and she kept saying, "See, I'm an Aries, so I'm deeper than most people" - what a dumb thing to say by someone so "deep"

I like funk, too, but I get Parliament mixed up with a lot of other stuff from that era. I seem to like off-genre… I don't like Robert Johnson blues, but I LOVE "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".. I don't listen to Bill Haley, but I love "L.A. Woman", Bob Marley for reggae (that's about it), a lot of 70s prog.. Flavor. Even with folk, Phil Ochs' "Changes" is beautiful, Jackson C. Frank's "Milk and Honey" and my favorite Lightfoot song, "Beautiful".. I like the slower funk, stuff by George Harrison, Average White Band (everyone knows "If I Ever Lose This Heaven").. I love Sabbath, but no other "heavy metal". I guess I just don't like the root of any genre, and I don't like the word "genre" much. I just sorta judge it all on its own, just like with albums, since there's many great albums with 1-2 shitty songs I don't want to be associated with.

Currently playing (randomly)

Mellow Candle - Sheep Season

Lately, all I want to hear is female voices.

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

Yes, there are times when a guy doesn't wanna hear another harsh male voice.

I agree with you on Black Sabbath. It's the only heavy metal I like.

My taste veer more towards British and punk.

I love the 70's edgy glam acts - Bowie, T. Rex, Roxy Music, Eno. But other than that I don't listen to classic rock.

Except I have a soft spot for Neil Young.

You like folk. So what do you think of Leonard Cohen?

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

I have a few songs of his, and I especially like "The Stranger Song".. Have you seen the amazing movie "McCabe & Mrs. Miller"? - his first album is the entire soundtrack, and in that same year, Cat Stevens was on "Harold and Maude"

I think 90% of my favorite bands/artists are from the UK, which is kinda fucked up if you think about it. The US is the epicenter, where even the English, etc., come to make their fortune, name, etc., and then you have the amazing population in the US, so one would think it would be the other way around. I guess the ratio for talent is much higher there. Same with movies. Out of the movies I like from the last 40 years, a majority are from outside the US

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

Rock music is an exception to the rule when it comes to America versus Britain. Look at all the best rock bands. They're mostly English.

I think most of it is the top 40 pop mentality of Americans. It's more difficult for an innovative band to gain a base here.

Plus America has large country and folk traditions. It tends to adulterate our rock music to a degree. And though country and folk are great traditions in their own right, they tend to mollify rock.

I don't really listen to folk. Like I said I'm more a decadent rock and punk guy. But I was introduced to Cohen when I was in college by a good friend. His work is great, really coming out of a beatnik tradition.

Check these lol lyrics:

You were Marlon Brando,
I was Steve McQueen.
You were K.Y. Jelly,
I was Vaseline.
You were the father of modern medicine,
I was Mr. Clean.
You were the whore and the beast of Babylon,
I was Rin Tin Tin.

Re: Favorite Albums of 1975

Good point. It's almost akin to those who know they won't make a movie or album that makes money, so they go for prestige or critical success. Or the sometimes typical "OK, we made a commercial album, NOW we can do what we like" - which is anti-artist to me, but happens anyway.
