Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Here's mine:

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Lovecraft is a racist, overrated bore.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Phew, what a relief to hear that!

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

We can't say for sure he was racist.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

His cat was named "Ni**** Man." How isn't that racist?

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

I'm just realizing why I avoided him for years. Basic instinct.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Well what else are you going to name a black cat? Charles?

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

I don't know, Soot? Child Laborer Chimney Sweep?

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Cinderella?

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Honestly, and hear me out on this: even if you told a friend in 2020 that your black cat was named "Soot" they'd be like, "What kind of name is that for a cat? Why not just call it Nigger-man?"

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Oh goodness. So I assume it’s the same for cats called Midnight?

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

"C'mere Midnight!"

I'm not feeling it.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

In the age of irony people might even think it's funny. Maybe Lovecraft was ahead of his time after all.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

He was a postmodern hipster who knew that the signifier and the signified were always already sliding past each other.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Oh, God. You've finally made Lovecraft scary. I'll have nightmares tonight imagining a postmodern iteration.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

calling ur black cat "n….man" isnt being ironic tho. it's just overtly edgy and fucked up, still 100 years later or whenever that guy lived.

suck it.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

It is if you're black. I call myself a dyke to be ironic.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

would u feel perfectly ok if u hear a strange hetero person calling their dog on the street "dyke"?

suck it.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Yes. I don't get to decide what other people find offensive, though. I was being sarcastic anyway. Lovecraft was an insufferable racist.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

no u dont decide that but u can also not deny them from feeling hurt by what u are saying or whatever… in an "open" society such as ours we just gotta consider other's people's feelings too, especially us as whites. or rather that's how i roll and live by, here in my environment and in the way i was brought up.

suck it.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

idk i might have worded that wrongly sorry. i'm tired.. nevermind, it's not important,

suck it.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

No, you've got a point. I had nothing to say against it.

My bff's cat is named Django. It's black

I don't know if this helps or not

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

I know, it’s terrible but I kind of equate that with my grandparents naming their black cat “Blackie.” Plus, he was a little boy when he named that cat and was surrounded by racist family so he was just echoing what he was taught. As I wrote in my other response, he felt awful about all that, later in life.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Lovecraft is one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Whatever your hang ups about Race are, dont let them cloud your reason.

The only poster who had his account banned 4 times without ever breaking any rules each of those times.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Hardly. I took seven years' worth of literature classes, and not a single one ever so much as mentioned Lovecraft. He's about as literary as Harry Potter. All entertainment, no substance.

He's fine to enjoy, and many people will disagree with my opinion for very valid reasons, but I'd never list him among the greats.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Blah blah blah. We get it. Your professors raved about Hemmingeay ad infinitum. Spare
me. Lovecraft is brilliant and his stories resonate with far more people than anything Steinbeck or Hemmingway or any of the other so called Giants of Literature ever wrote.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Actually, I don't like Hemingway either.

Tip-of-the-iceberg writing is pompousness guised as profundity.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Jackie, did you know that Lovecraft regretted all of that later in life? He lived a super sheltered early life and his fear of racial degeneration was due to his lack of experience in the world. He ended up falling in love with a Jewish woman who opened his eyes to reality. Their relationship didn’t work out, I expect due to his anxiety issues, but still he did change his world view. And I do think his stories are worth reading because they give you a glimpse into that kind of fear. Fear is worthy of study.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

I've read his work, I just find it to be tedious. I understand that society has different ideas regarding what is or isn't scary depending on the time period, but even the baser elements of his stories fail to resonate with me. The bodies of work he's produced respond terribly to any sort of literary analysis. Its literary fluff that's only recognized today for its antiquity. He's the turn-of-the-century Stephen King. Even his ideas regarding evolutionary degeneration were primitive when compared to works like "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," which explored the possibility through a moral rather than racial lens.

(Literature major rant over.)

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

I recently called him the "poor man's Edgar allan Poe," but I don't think that's fair to Poe!

Brilliant analysis, btw.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

No, it's not fair at all. Poe's ideas are still chilling to consider. He mastered the short story, after all, and the art of frisson.

Thank you! Talking literature is what I do.

Hark! Harold the angel sings.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

"turn-of-the-century Stephen King" is so brilliantly reductive, but also so true!

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Poe couldn't write " At the Mountains of Madness " even if he had a century to complete it. Poor man's Poe. You're an Idiot. But we already knew that. Didnt we.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Kind of like Darth Vader

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

Lovecraft is a racist, overrated bore.
Why would I give a rat's arse if Lovecraft was racist? If you want to judge all the great literary figures of the past, you'll find much which doesn't jive with our modern sensibilities. I'm sure he was a raging homophobe as well as were most heterosexuals in Western society up until recently. So? The art is separate from the artist.

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

It ruins it for me. Like I can't listen to Chris brown after hearing he beat up rhianna. I didn't listen to him before that but I definitely won't now. I think that's just a personal opinion. One person might not care about supporting a POS but others might

Re: Enough nonsense - what's your favorite Lovecraft story or poem?

I disagree. No human being is perfect, but some are worse than others. Thomas Jefferson wrote most the Bill of Rights. And he also owned slaves. But we don't chuck the Bill of Rights.

Shadow Over Innsmouth. Terrifying. I’ve had dreams like that since I was a kid. Being surrounded with nowhere to go
