In an excellent movie (gattaca for instance) and it flops for no good reason (besides maybe bad marketing) or hes in movies that LOOk like they should be good, then when u see them it feels like you watched a glorified b-list movie.

poor guy, it seems like he just keeps getting the short end of the stick lol. He either chooses a good movie to be in and it flops, or it seems like a movie WOULD be good on paper, but it doesnt come together and ive never once felt like it had much to do with any failures of Hawke's end, the movies just dont come together very nicely..

I think its because his talent is really quite limited.

He's a third tier actor, so he won't be getting great scripts anyway.

Other than Gattaca and the Linklater films, he's not really been in prestigious or successful films. I think something like The Purge is one of his biggest hits.

GoonGirl for Hire

He tries it all. Unfortunately, his hot streak in the 90's didn't seem to give him the opportunity his contemporaries have gotten. I think he's talented. You can really see his passion for movies in interviews too.

He doesn't have a Production company like Brad Pitt and I don't see him having b68 the clout to like Leonardo Dicaprio to get something off the ground. And he still says it was hard to get "Wolf of Wall Street" made. Maybe the subject matter, but it's just an example.

He's at the mercy of screenwriters. He can't write them all. He is over 40 and still works and tries to remain viable. Good for him.
