Sons of Anarchy : Do you think Clay was a good leader?

Do you think Clay was a good leader?

I'm just curious before these boards disappear (hate that they are shutting them down by the way) what everyone's thoughts are about Clay's leadership.

In some ways,i thought he was a good leader. The club made a lot of money under his leadership, he was never afraid to make difficult decisions, and he always did what he thought was best for the club. He was good at negotiating deals with the different clubs.

I didn't like that he killed Piney or that he put a hit on Opie although I sort of understand why he thought it needed to be done. He could put emotions and feelings for people aside if he needed to in order to take someone close to him out if he felt they crossed him or endangered the club.

I hated the way he beat Gemma. That wasn't cool.

I did feel bad for him because he would try to lead or made decisions for the club and Jax would constantly undermine him and argue with him in front of the others.

I think he was a better leader than Jax.

Re: Do you think Clay was a good leader?

He was. He ran the club for about two decades, he was loved by his brothers, and respected in town and among the rivals.
Only in s4 he lost his cool and started acting rather stupid. that's when he went down as a leader.
Overall, he was much better than Jax. Jax treated the club as his personal property. He did some good things, but caused much more grief to everyone.

Re: Do you think Clay was a good leader?

Jax only started to ruin the club when Opie died and the love of his life died. Otherwise he had a straight head and gave Clay a run for his money

Clay was the one who got the club into the cartel/gun business which was the beginning of the end for them.

Re: Do you think Clay was a good leader?

This is a very tough question.

He was the leader of a club that was fundamentally "evil" and did a lot of bad things. He supported those actions and encouraged them. From that perspective, he was putting his brothers in danger and at unnecessary risk. He could have avoided that by moving the club into more legitimate revenue streams.

By "good", are you asking if he was an effective leader, or are you asking if he was a good guy that helped the club. He was good at keeping control of the club and maintaining order, but he also used a lot of sketchy methods over the years to do so. He was effective, but at the cost of being a bad guy.

Re: Do you think Clay was a good leader?

I'm a bit partial here because i always loved Clay and never quite liked Jax.
Yes, he was supposedly 'the bad guy' but in s1-3 he just seemed to be a nicer person. I.e. he looked out for the community, did not want to get involved with drugs or prostitution, kept peace with rival gangs, and the affection between him and Gemma was very sweet. In s4 he did thing that his old self would never have done, thats when he lost control.

He was good

But he was taking the club in a direction that Jax knew his father (John), who was the original leader, wouldn't have taken it

Bobby backs that up because he was one of the original members and knew John wouldn't have approved

That's why there was so much angst between Jax and Clay and why Jax tried to steer the club away from that direction
