on EBAY...

http://dvd.search-desc.ebay.com/robinson-crusoe-on-mars_DVDs-Movies_W0QQfromZR41QQftsZ2QQsacatZ11232

Seems to be slated for a full re-release, according to listing on Amazon.com...

I got my copy on Ebay

b.t.w. Favourite scene?
when the orbiter "just out of reach" screams by overhead (with nice "doppler" effect!!!)
and the stranded astronaught triggers it's self-destruct...

I saw that scene in the original theatre release (I was 10...) and I've remembered it vividly for 40 years

Truely a film FAR ahead of it's time, with only PARTIALLY "cheesy" effects,,,

Re: DVD finally released!

and ripped from the Criterion Laser Disc..

don't know if it has the commentary though?

Re: DVD finally released!

I got the EU copy of the DVD from someone in the UK on Ebay. ALL Region. No commentary.... It would be really great to get an official DVD with a commentary and maybe hear from the actors, today. Image is very good, but there seems to be about 3 relatively long anoying gaps, altho when things resume, it doesn't look like much is missing. I saw this film on TV when I was a kid and was fascinated by the way Captain Christopher learned to survive. Friday was a really awesome guy too, not taking his oxygen pills to help Christopher and taking care of Mona. And there was the scene where they are walking in the distance, and you hear Chris reciting one of the Psalms. The auroras were awesome too. Nice film, should have been on DVD LONNNNGGGGGG before now.

Re: DVD finally released!

I bought a copy from eBay in the US and have since watched the film on DVD ( burnt) as well. The long annoying gaps were the side changes of the Laser Discs.
The CAV encoding causes one awkward side break, and with the movie being 110 minutes that would be four sides, thus , three changes. The gaps were maybe two seconds long. Stereo sound only, no commentary, no extras, no chapter stops ,colors were a little bland, the picture a little fuzzy and bit vibrant bright.

I agree that the movie should get the royal DVD treatment and therefore the extras would include 5.1 stereo, production stills, as well as a commentary.

Re: DVD finally released!

In a small little email just sent from Criterion they announced they were releasing it next year. Awesome.

Re: DVD finally released!

Once and for the last time....Your full of it! Criterion does not own the rights to this movie and therefore will not be releasing it. Why are people insisting that this is being released on dvd by criterion? I already contacted them back in november 2006, it's now april 2007......they do not own the rights to the film anymore. Just because criterion released it on Laserdisc eons ago, does not mean an automatic DVD release. They sold the rights back to the distributor. Pure IMDB sillyness

I suppose you could always save face and eat a shoe :O

Re: DVD finally released!

It is official; Robinson Crusoe on Mars is to be released by CRITERION in September 2007:
Here are the details:

Robinson Crusoe on Mars (SRP $39.95) will include anamorphic widescreen video (2.35:1 aspect ratio), Dolby Digital 1.0 mono audio, audio commentary (with screenwriter Ib Melchior, actors Paul Mantee and Victor Lundin, production designer Al Nozaki, Oscar-winning special effects designer and historian Robert Skotak and excerpts from a 1979 audio interview with director Byron Haskin), the Destination: Mars featurette, excerpts from Melchior's original screenplay, a music video, a stills gallery (of behind-the-scenes photos, production designs, and promotional material), the theatrical trailer and a booklet featuring a new essay by filmmaker and space historian Michael Lennick, a Brief Yargorian Dictionary of the original alien dialect, a list of facts about Mars and the original screenplay

Re: DVD finally released!

I don't get why you are so against the Criterion release. Obviously it has been released on dvd and blu by Criterion, but why so adamant and angry about it not happening? What was in it for you? As a fan why would you not want a Criterion release, they are hands down the best in the biz...

Re: DVD finally released!

dude, I wrote that back in 2006...it's now 2012! If you want the ultimate release of Robinson Crusoe on Mars, I have it from Criterion Laserdisc that I burned to DVD with extras you wouldn't believe.

The name is Scruffy Nerfherder

Re: DVD finally released!

sounds like someone needs to apologize. Watching my criterion dvd that you said would never be...

Re: DVD finally released!

Hey! you got a thing from Criterion?? Did they give you any idea on a release date?

Re: DVD finally released!

Can't wait to buy the new DVD from Criterion on 9/18/07.

Saw RCOM at the Egyptian in Hollywood in 2002, and the two main actors (Paul Mantee and Vic Ludin) told some amusing stories of their experiences making the film... (the monkey 'Mona' was actually a male, and Paul said he was 'fed up' having to eat all those 'Martian' sausages by the end of filming).

Any idea if the DVD extras are some of the same extras from the Criterion Laser Disc edition? (which I sadly have not seen)

Re: DVD finally released!

HONEY-BUMPKINS DAHRLING; IT'S A BOOTLEG, YOU BOUGHT A BOOTLEG...IT'S NOT A FACTORY RELEASED DVD. SOMEONE BURNT IT IN THEIR BASEMENT AND SOLD IT TO YOU. THERE HAS YET TO BE AN OFFICIAL DVD STUDIO RELEASE OF ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS TO DATE EXCEPT FOR THE ONLY ONE TIME OFFICIAL RELEASE ON CRITERION LASERDISC, WHICH THEY NO LONGER OWN THE RIGHTS TO AND THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO RELEASE IT ON DVD BECAUSE OF THAT.

Ya gotta love this guy! Especially seeing as Criterion has just announced the release of this dvd on 9/24!!!

Re: DVD finally released!

Actually, the release date is scheduled for 9/18, not 9/24.

(FYI: DVDs are almost always released on a Tuesday and 9/24 is a Monday).

Re: DVD finally released!

THIS ISLAND EARTH: I was in Virgin Mega store in NYC last night and saw The "factory sealed" dvd for myself. It's a criterion release. I'm sure everyone accepts your apology. How's that crow you're eating? Pretty tasty, huh?
