Christians are subject to different laws of reality than everyone else.

Re: Can you be both Buddhist and Christian?

bikini hot and brainy. monicah for the win!!

good question. i mean, for those who were catholic, the entire leadership of nazi germany were never excommunicated from the catholic church or they themselves denounced their belief in christ so you can be 100% antithetical to Christianity and still be nominally identified as a christian so why not what you posed as a question? i'd rather have the first than the latter.

organized religion is most destructive to human happiness.

Re: Can you be both Buddhist and Christian?

Christianity is not spiritual.
They take everything in the bible to mean it as it happened and they are pretty material.
Buddhism is spiritual.
They are not compatible so I do not see how anyone can be both.

Whomever does one or the other is going to be comfortable with doing that and not want to try the other.
They are not like ice cream flavors where you can put them on the cone or in the bowl at the same time and enjoy them.
Ppl are set in their ways and do what they think is right for them.

✝️ ¿Can you be both Buddhist and Christian?

I used to work with a Buddhist woman who celebrated Christmas in a big way. At the time I was a Christian who didn't celebrate it at all.

You're Muslim now?

✝️ ¿Can you be both Buddhist and Christian?

I'm a Messianic Jew. Some of us celebrate Christmas, others do not. We'll all be celebrating Rosh Hoshana this week, though not all on the same day.

Re: Can you be both Buddhist and Christian?

Ironically enough, when I was in Southeast Asia in 2019, I discovered that many Asians start out as Buddhists, and then morph into Christians late in life.

Yes it is. It was definitely a surprise to me.

Re: Can you be both Buddhist and Christian?

No. There's no way to reconcile the two.

Do people not understand the fundamental principles of both religions?

Re: Can you be both Buddhist and Christian?

So, when the Buddhist has their Christian hat on, they realize they can't be a Buddhist?

So they can't be both.

The Buddhist couldn't believe in Jesus either. Or heaven. And so on.

Thanks. Sorry if that seems dismissive. It wasn't meant to be. I just don't see how it's possible and so it feels redundant to discuss it.

No strictly no

That’s like asking can you be a satanist and a Christian

It is written choose now who you will serve also written thou shall worship the lord thy god and only him xx

Why are you so obsessed with me?

Re: Can you be both Buddhist and Christian?

I think the answer is that it depends. It depends on what beliefs you want to keep from each religion, and how you mesh them together.

There are some beliefs that could be in conflict and some that aren’t. For example, Christians believe in a single afterlife, while (most) Buddhists believe in rebirth and multiple after lives. So you would naturally have to believe in one or the other. But you could, for example, believe in rebirth from Buddhism, and God from Christianity, and the belief system could work. You could believe in Enlightenment (perhaps as seeing God…that’s what I believe of a sort though I’m pantheist. But the Christian gnostics had a similar path and description of enlightenment, they just called enlightenment union with God and saw it that way).

Belief wise, nobody can tell you how to believe or what to believe. You do not have to settle for a “set” of beliefs and believe all of them. You can mix and match beliefs if they all work together for you and make sense for you.

It’s true that if you have a mixed belief system like that, some Christians may say you are not Christian, especially if it’s very mixed. But, I doubt all Christians will be that way. You might be able to find some Christians that are more flexible if the important beliefs (like belief in Jesus) remain. But a lot will say you cannot do it.

Buddhists, on the other hand, say, if you want to believe in a mix of beliefs, go ahead, you can still be Buddhist as long as the core beliefs are there. (For example belief in enlightenment, and belief in the impermanence of life).

I would also disagree with people who say that Buddhism believes the world is an illusion. It’s pretty real. It’s just that it’s an illusion to think that this world is all there is, without another side to reality out there. It’s also an illusion to think that ANYTHING in this world is permanent. And reality as we see it, is often filtered through the perception of our thoughts, so that filter could be said to be an illusion.

If you really want to mix beliefs and not care what other people think, or be among like minded people, you might find a home with the Universal Unitarians (though Buddhists would be happy to welcome you too). Universal Unitarians are more accepting of mix belief systems (in fact that’s what they’re all about), and I would be willing to bet that there are people there who consider themselves Christian but have mixed beliefs.

Another option, if you really really want to keep the Christian belief system in it’s entirety, is to practice Buddhism in a secular way. You could focus on the meditation side, for example. You might want to look into Zen Buddhism, Vipassina Buddhism, and just keep it secular. Or you could look at just meditation practices, though I think you can get a lot more out of the meditation side if you find a Zen Buddhist place and just keep it secular when you think about it. (Zen Buddhists will go deeper into meditation than most secular folk will).

I would also look into the Christian Gnostics. They’re a denomination that died out long ago, but from what I understand about them, their belief system would mesh well with Zen Buddhism in particular. (Probably Vipassana Buddhism as well).

Many Christians, by the way, don’t believe or follow 100% of their religion. Not all, but a number don’t. The question is how much of each religion to you want to believe in, and do you believe in the core beliefs of each religion or not.

But nobody can tell you how you identify. They may say “to be Christian you must believe xyz” and you can accept that or not. But, I personally would consider anyone who believes in the core teachings of Christianity to be Christian. Who else would believe that Jesus is the son of God but a Christian? What else would you call them?
