A Nightmare on Elm Street : A real nightmare indeed…

A real nightmare indeed…

Freddy Krueger gave me nightmares for many years. Quite literally. Robert England was scary in every way. His appearance (with and without make up), his voice, and mannerisms. Now I understand that Robert England was too old to be Freddy, but replacing him should have been thought out better. Jackie Earl Haley was too short and skinny, for starters. His features were too feminine, as well. This made the realistic approach to a burn victim less impressive. The main cast, especially in a remake, is very crucial to the success of the film. Unfortunately, they failed on putting together a cast that we could sympathize with. They weren't necessarily awful, but not good either. The characters themselves were not dissimilar from the other kids in the hall. They were too ordinary. Characters who lacked character and the actors who failed to bring any life to them. They were dead from the start.

The plot is what I have a huge problem with. Making him a child molester changed the tone of how creepy he is. While this could be argued that it helped, it just made me uncomfortable. I hate him rather than fear him. Besides, Freddy Krueger was a sadistic teen murderer who liked playing cat and mouse. Makes sense. Teens are hormonal jerks who would be more deserving of such horrific death. Lol. Also, the roles of who the protagonist is seems to be a bit blurred. While we know Nancy is the main character, they seem to focus on Kris a lot in the beginning of the film. While it's okay to have more than one main character, they seem to keep jumping between characters and their discovery of who this man is. Thus, making the obvious frustratingly long.

Although I did like some of the new effects (snow falling in the bedroom, ashes in the classroom, drugstore scene, ect.) the biggest disappointment is the scene where Freddy is coming through the wall. Obvious CGI is not impressive. Also, they butchered original scenes. The bathtub scene was far off. They should have stuck with him torturing her under water. The idea of drowning in your sleep is also very scary. Being pulled by a maniac makes it that much scarier. The scene where Kris (Tina in the original) lacked greatly. First off, she was slashed then dragged around, making a gory mess. The scene was also rushed. Remember, Freddy stalks his victims and plays with them. The bodybag scene also was disappointing. While she did look scary, the whole scene was set in one place. It was boring. The cinematography was also very boring. They just didn't create the panic I was suppose to feel. Having jump scenes are not what makes a movie scary. It's the build of when the killer is going to make his next kill. The death scenes lacked creativity. I understand some people would freeze in despair, but you'd think some people would run or I don't know... Fight back. He's a man with a knives for fingernails. Not a chainsaw or machete.

I was hoping they would try to make the movie their own while they captured original scenes without altering them too much. Every time a failed remake is made, I die a little more inside. This one was the ultimate kill.

Re: A real nightmare indeed…

Yeah they had many directions to take this and make a great film. They were lazy and went for a generic story.
