Watchmen : # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

# 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

I love both the graphic novel and film versions of Watchmen. The Ultimate Cut of the film isn't a movie, it's an experience. So here's my aforementioned Top 10:

1. Superman: The Movie
2. The Avengers (2012)
3. Watchmen
4. Thor 2: The Dark World
5. Guardians Of The Galaxy
6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
7. X-Men: First Class
8. The Incredible Hulk
9. Iron Man
10. Batman Returns

Honorable Mention: Swamp Thing (which a lot of fans either forget about, don't know, or don't classify as a superhero movie.)

What's yours?

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Not a fan of Nolan's Batman hey? I guess we are just two different people!
I'm glad you included (apart from Watchmen) The Incredible Hulk on there - I for one really liked that movie.
My list would have all 3 of Nolan's films, but I guess that's why they call it an opinion. All in all, a good list - sounds like 2014 was a good year for you!

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Thanks, Crimson Giant. I'm not a huge fan of Nolan's Batman, or Nolan in general. He's very thematically oriented, which I like, but I don't care for his execution. He crams too many ideas into his movies, and lacks subtlety. I blame him for Man Of Steel, which I absolutely loathed, more than I do Snyder.

2014 was pretty good for me, movie-wise. Looking forward to Guardians coming out on blu-ray next month...

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Nolan isn't responsible for Man of Steel. That was snyder?? The studio put his name on that film to make money.

-The Dark Knight
-The Incredibles
-Batman
-X Men Days of Future Past
-X Men
-Watchmen
-The Dark Knight Rises
-X Men 2
-X Men First Class
-Batman Begins

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

The avengers is number 2 (!) and before watchmen? (!) Hell no.
Thor 2 number 3?? My god this is the worst superhero movie i have ever seen, no exaggeration, this movie was sooo bad! Even Hell Boy 2 is better...
In 6, the amazing spiderman 2?? This movie is also unbearable! So bad.
Iron man in 9? I never understood the hype around iron man but the movie wasn't a total failure so i understand.

After that rant i still have to agree on some, like watchmen obviously, best superhero movie of all time as for me. X-Men first class, i totally agree, awesome movie with such a "badassness" to it, Michael Fassbender just steals the show! Much better than days of future past i think.
I also agree on the incredible hulk, loved the movie for some reason but i'm a bit ashamed of it since i can't really explain it and since it has such a bad reputation. The ending was kinda bad though...
The avengers was pretty good too, but doesn't deserve number 2 by a long shot.

Haven't seen guardians yet so i can't judge.

Happy you didn't mention the dark knight rises, this movie was really bad, but i liked Batman begins. Dark Knight isn't bad either but i'm unable to rate it objectively because of all the hype surrounding it, so many fan boys defending it tooth and nail. Loved the grittiness and badassness, yet it seems a bit overrated still and it has a lot to do with Ledger's death i think.

At last, i think they did a good job on the winter soldier, but it is also a bit overrated...

My 2 cents anyway...

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

1. Superman The Movie
2. Superman II
3. Guardians of The Galaxy
4. Spider-Man II
5. Watchmen
6. Batman
7. Hellboy 2
8. X2
9. The Dark Night
10. Spiderman

Outside of Guardians of The Galaxy and the first 2 Spiderman movies, the Marvel stuff has been complete garbage IMO

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

"Unbreakable".

Makes all the above (save "Watchmen") look like the kids movies they really are.

For all it's professionalism Nolan's trilogy was still mutton dressed as lamb.

If only you could see what I have seen with your eyes.

This. (except for the Watchmen bit)

I hope they never make a sequel. Everything important is already said, any sequel would probably be action only.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

I think Unbreakable is a brilliant film, adam_jondo. Of course, I don't agree that the movies on my list are all for kids. That's like saying all comic books are for kids. Marvel Comics have always been aimed at the widest market possible, both kids and adults (who haven't lost their sense of wonder). So the movies are going to reflect that.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Unbreakable was enjoyable the first time around. Then I watched it again (twice) can't believe I ever liked it. It's pretty bad. I watched all of Shymalanas films again. The only one that's decent is signs but even that got on my nerves a little.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Sorry you feel that way.

Personally I find "Unbreakable" gains stature with each viewing and that "Signs" is the least successful of Shyamalans opening quartet. Then again I also loved the "Village" but get why "horror/thriller" fans might be underwhelmed by it.

Conversely, I just re-watched Watchmen and it crashed and burned before my eyes.

Don't get me wrong I think Zack Snyder, his cast, and crew worked miracles translating the original graphic novel, but you can't make silk out of a sows ear and in the cold light of hindsight...

Alan Moore's original GN is actually a hollow misanthropic slice of epicly packaged pulp with unrealized thematic ambitions way above it's station.

There I said it.

But praise to Snyder for his (misguided) labor of love and in particular...

******** SPOILER **********

..his ballsy decision to ditch Moores lazy and ridiculous "Giant Alien Squid" climax and substitute "Dr Manhatten" as earth's pseudo-nemesis, thereby salvaging the narrative threads some much needed substance and integrity.

If only you could see what I have seen with your eyes.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Sorry you feel that way. Perhaps you have a wire missing.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Dude. That was lazy.

Instead of the glib one liner, how about you highlight some of the Graphic Novels merits.

Could be I failed to plumb Moores hidden depths.

If only you could see what I have seen with your eyes.

That is quite literally the first time I have ever heard someone talk about the graphic novel like that. It's such a different kind of opinion that it may take some time to process.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

You may be the first and only person besides myself who has ever listed both Watchmen and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as two of their favorite comic book movies. Kudos, sir.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

I really don't get why people don't like TASM2. It's a masterpiece. The love story is done way better in TASM 1 & 2 than in the Raimi trilogy, and the whole reboot is so much closer to what the comics are.

I guess people just don't like Garfield for whatever reason. But in my opinion he's doing a much better job than McGuire, and Emma Stone can act circles around Kirsten Dunst.

Really, I don't see how a true comics fan could not like either of these movies.

Apparently, everyone who disagrees with you cannot be a True Comic Fan.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

I wouldn't exactly call TASM2 a masterpiece, but it was certainly not the odd man out of the 4 superhero movies this year. It and Interstellar were my most anticipated movies going into 2014, and I enjoyed it much more than X-Men: DOFP (which I also liked).

The only film on your list I absolutely would not include is Thor 2. For me, it's only half of a good movie. And as that half is good, and not great, I can't in good conscience support it, and deem it one of Marvel's lesser efforts. The only one on your list I have not seen is Batman Returns.

For reference, here are my top 15 superhero movies:

1. Watchmen (in my top 3 of all-time next to Interstellar and The Hobbit trilogy)
2. Iron Man 3 (took me a long time to come around to this one)
3. The Dark Knight
4. Captain America: The First Avenger
5. Guardians of the Galaxy
6. The Amazing Spider-Man
7. The Avengers
8. X2: X-Men United
9. Superman Returns (never understood the hate for this)
10. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
11. Batman Begins
12. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
13. X-Men: First Class
14. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
15. Thor

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

I nod your inclusion of TASM2 and Superman Returns. I believe both to be underrated.

My favorite 10:
1. Watchmen
2. Kick-Ass
3. Spider-Man 2
4. Thor
5. Winter Soldier
6. TASM 2
7. Spider-Man
8. Hellboy
9. Guardian of the Galaxy
10. X-Men: First Class (or X2 depending on my mood)

Least Favorite:
Man of Steel (Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn)

I'm not an actor, I just play one on TV.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Thor 2? TASM2? You must be really kidding.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

In my opinion...

1-The Dark Knight

2-Batman Begins

3-The Dark Knight Rises

4-X-Men Days of Future Past

5-Watchmen

6-Captain America: The Winter Soldier

7-Captain America: Civil War

8-X-Men First Class

9-Iron Man

10-The Avengers

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

1-The Dark Knight

2-Batman Begins

3-The Dark Knight Rises

4-X-Man Days of Future Past

5-Watchman

6-X-Man First Class

7-Man In Black

8-300

9-Iron Man

10-The Avengers
300 a superhero movie? I don't think so. I loved it though.

My main problem with Nolan's Batman films is that the hand to hand combat scenes are atrocious. Batman is supposed to be a master of MANY different martial arts yet he never throws a kick? They should have got some Hong Kong martial arts choreographer or something. You can almost say that the corny 60s show with the ZOWIE! and BLAM! had better fight scenes that Nolan's. However, everything else was pretty damn good.

You are right about the Batman films. The lacking of Batman's hand to hand combat skills was okay for me at first, but started bothering me a little during repeated viewings. The rest of the actions are very good though.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

The Dark Knight Trilogy has grown on me, but I still can't take those movies all that seriously. But then, I've always been more of a Marvel fan than D.C. I love the Burton Batman films, though. And even Batman & Robin has a special place in my heart cause I love Uma Thurman, and Arnie is hilarious as Mr. Freeze.

That's my movie list. Does V for Vendetta count? If Series Count I would remove X-Men and shift 5-9 down one spot and put Daredevil Netflix Series in 5 spot

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

1-3 are sort of interchangeable.

1. X-Men DOFP
2. The Winter Soldier
3. Watchmen
4. The Dark Knight
5. Man of Steel
6. Age of Ultron
7. The Avengers
8. Batman Returns

Nice list, although I loathe Man Of Steel for its acting, dialogue, and contrivances. Good to see Mystery Men on someone's list. That and Unbreakable rarely get mentioned...

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

I liked Man of Steal except for the villain, and Jonathan Kent's death. Zod was too 1 dimensional, and the motivation for the antagonists was just too simple. Otherwise, I loved the tone of the film, and the new Superman.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

You didn't find the acting horrid? I know several people who enjoy MOS--mainly for the action--but they all say the acting wasn't great...

Gotta admit, I compare every version of Superman I see to Chris Reeve, and his portrayal is so awesome that it's gonna take something really special to equal it.

www.amazon.com/author/jlrucilez

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

I generally don't care what other people think. Because most people that make judgements on these forums are just hopping on bandwagons, since they have the inability to make an analysis for themselves.

I liked Superman. I thought Costner as Jonathan Kent was great. Martha Kent was fine. Saying the acting is horrible is a pretty broad statement. I assume most people are referring to Michael Shannon. To that I'd say is the acting the problem or is the script/directing the problem? I just think some of the characters fell flat on the script/story side. If you write someone like a cartoon character, it doesn't matter how well they act, they are going to be *beep* In Shannon's case, he was portraying a one dimensional character, with sloppily written motivations.

So no, I don't think the acting was horrid. And I have no nostalgia colouring my perception of Cavil. I quite prefer him over Reeves.

Also, when you actually go back to those old Superman films now, they don't really hold up. They're pretty campy and ridiculous. I much prefer the MOS tone and atmosphere, and the current direction of the DCCU. MOS is also beautifully shot. The cinematography is excellent. The pacing is great. The score is fantastic. The arch and beats are all there. It just has that one hole of the antagonist. But overall it's a great film.

I am surprised you'd have such a problem with MOS though, and have TAS 2 in your top 10. The issues that are sprinkled in MOS are found in spades in TAS 2. That movie is filled with all sorts of pacing, tonal, and character development issues. Not to mention Electro/Rhino's razzie worthy performances.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

See, I have to disagree on all points, except that the direction was probably lacking. I thought Costner's performance was stilted, and I didn't like that he was written to make Clark ashamed of himself. Ditto for Martha, and for some reason the way she has to pat everybody's shoulder while talking to them gets on my nerves.

Shannon's performance was comical, although I do like his monologue at the end where he says his only reason for living is to protect Krypton. I also liked the terra- (Krpto?) forming idea. And I'll give MOS credit for giving Supe a real reason to actually care about Lois.

Other than that, I feel the flashback scenes are incredibly rushed. We see Clark for a total of 20 seconds on the fishing trawler before he's leaping into action on the tanker. Same thing with saving the busload of kids. And the Jesus symbolism is way too heavy-handed.

As for the Reeve Superman films, I can understand anyone not liking Parts 2-4. They are very campy and kid friendly, despite the awesome performance of Terrence Stamp as Zod. But the original Superman film is an homage to all the Superman serials, cartoons, and comics that came before. Some of those were campy. Personally, I love Luthor's wit, and Otis's bumbling antics.

I guess what it comes down to for me is this: when Supe lets out that scream after breaking Zod's neck, I don't feel anything. Makes me chuckle. But when Supe screams after finding Lois dead and takes off to alter time, I'm moved every time, even after countless viewings.

I guess it's a generational thing.

To me, TASM 2 is a masterpiece. I don't understand the hate it gets. That version of Electro isn't what I grew up with, but I liked Fox's interpretation, and I'm not much of a Fox fan (liked Django, though). I'll agree the depiction of Rhino was more for comic relief, but it's also such a small part of the movie that it doesn't bother me.

Oh, and I didn't mean to imply that you're a follower in any way, it's just that even people who like MOS usually agree that the acting wasn't the best, so I was somewhat surprised...

But hey, I wish I could've enjoyed MOS. I'm hoping Batman VS Superman will have a better script.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

You liked Foxx's portrayal of the stereotypical nerd?

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Yeah, because it isn't what you'd expect from a comic book villain, not to mention that it creates a kind of symmetry in that Parker's a nerd outside of his costume as well. I also liked that they gave him some depth with his inner fantasies, showing that he's a bit paranoid and unbalanced. Also not what you'd expect from a comic book movie.

But...I'm more impressed with his performance after the change. It was handled well from a psychological standpoint. At first, he's afraid, doesn't know how to control his newfound power. The cops attack him even though he's not a threat...yet. He sees Spider-Man, whom he already has a fantasy relationship with. The whole situation is so precarious, with only one realistic outcome. So his paranoid delusions drive him over the edge and he blames Spider-Man.

As far as Fox's performance, he plays Electro very menacingly. The stare, the voice. Yeah, I dug it. Even when he's helpless, you feel his rising anger:

"You do realize that you locked me up in a prison that runs on electricity. I feel it in the walls..."

2.BLADE II
3.X-Men
4.Blade
5.Spider Man II

8.Hell Boy II:The Golden Army
9.Batman Begins
10.The Avengers

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

Interesting list. Thor 2 over the first? Batman Returns as the highest Batman movie? The Amazing Spiderman as the highest Spiderman movie? Very different taste from mine but respect for being original.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

I Loved both the film and the graphic novel. In fact Watchmen was the first comic book story that I ever read. I have to say that I cannot praise the wholly original graphic novel, Watchmen, enough. It elevated both itself and comic books as a whole to a much higher standing in literature. It is the standard in which all other comics should be compared and judged, a standard in which all other comics should strive for. That being said, while the film was amazing faithful to it's source, taboo of taboos the film did out due the original in at least one aspect.

I am referring to Ozymandias' Plot in which the film makes a substitution of the city destroying unknown alien threat for that of Doctor Manhattan's "Turn".

I found it more elegant and logical as well as more succinct in some way and that it coheres better with the rest of the story.

Watchmen currently ranks #2 on my list, entitled Super-Hero Movies, the best and the worst.

I am afraid we differ quite a lot, based on your top 10 selection.
www.imdb.com/list/ls008449809
But here is a link to my list of over a 100 comic book movies and super-hero movies, in order from mind blowing all the way to why is this even a movie, oh and spoiler alert Catwoman isn't the worst, hard to believe though it may be.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

1. Kickass
2. Guardian of the Galaxy
3. The Crow
4. Avengers
5. Kickass II
6. Thor
7. Blade
8. Unbreakable
9. Black Mask
10. Faust (not a good movie, but my favorite "super-hero")

Now...... Let's get a "Lobo", movie.

Re: # 3 On My Top 10 Superhero Movie List…

While I did think watchmen was a good movie, I like the kickass series better since it too takes on the same scenario but it's more fun and at times silly
