Pretty Woman : Perhaps the worst movie ever

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

You're overthinking it. It is just a sweet tale.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

You're looking at this movie completely wrongCOMPLETELY! The whole point of the movie is that they changed each other in the best way possible. Due to living like a rich and classy lady, Vivian becomes more classy herself and cares more about her self respect. The more time Edward spent with Vivian, the more he realized that there's more to life than just money and work. There's love too. This is a beautiful film with a great story line, characters, and actors. Maybe you should re-watch the movie and try to understand why so many people love it.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

To start with, I want to make it clear that I am not one of those who agree with the subject title. Whilst this movie is far from perfect, it has many strengths to it, the least of which is its likeability. It is a warm, encouraging picture, and the greatest crime that it has committed is that of being overly-optimstic. There must be a million different reasons why a woman might become a prostitute but being one does not automaticslly make her a 'bad' person.

That she succeeds in improving her life (no disrespect to her previous situation, but I think marrying a considerate, good-looking millionaire who loves her counts as am improvement!) under improbable circumstances simply makes this film into a fantasy. Unrealistic - yes. At least the circumstances that lead to her 'salvation' are, but I don;t feel that Vivian is unrealistic, nor Edwward, nor Kit - and certainly not Stuckey or his wife or the hotel manager.

People make mistakes and get into unplanned and unwanted situations. Seldom do they manage to reverse these situations just by being decent, hhonest, caring and loving. Erwars and Vivian do. Good for them.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

I think you have to take it for what it isit's a kind of fairy tale really, and I think that's why it's popular.
personally, i don't care for it muchbut it has its moments, the two leads are great.
it's pretty unrealistic, but it is pleasant and we like the character Julia plays. we also I think are glad for her (and him) at the end.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

I don't think it's the worst movie ever, but I've got to say that it was so hyped up, that by the time I actually watched it, I was less than impressed. It's certainly not on my top 20 list of rom-coms, and I highly doubt if I'll ever watch it again.

As for the actually message of the movie, I don't know that it exactly glamourised prostitution, and I don't think it really matters. It's such a slow movie film, and the ending is so stereotypical, and it lasts at least 30 minutes too long, so that any message is forgotten.

"I have something to say, and I'm gonna say it to you, and you, and you and your hump!"

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Cddevine, you are a CLODHOPPER!!! LOL

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

It's not a god-awful movie. It's a romantic comedy with the plausibility of an action flick like Face-Off or Commando, but I assume (or hope) that people who like it just take it as Hollywood entertainment.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Its a movie. Its not suppose to be realistic. But its a very silly plot. I do get off on gere though. Technically its well made.

Don't hunt what you can't kill!

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

So, basically you're unhappy with life and have committed your time to try make us realize the completely obvious fact that this movie is unrealistic. Newsflash- the keyword here is "movie". Let us enjoy it and go spread your joy elsewhere.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

No, I am quite happy with my life. But I am unhappy with people who would spend their time defending this POS movie. Just because it's a 'movie' doesn't mean it has to be mindless drivel. But if that's what you like, by all means

BTW, my 'commitment' to this topic was a few days in April of 2009. Why did you feel the need to reply to an abandoned thread?

Why do you feel the need to check?

You are as transparent as glass. LMAO.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

I get an email when someone replies to the thread. It piques my curiosity to see the asinine comments people feel obliged to make.

Thanks for playing!

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Why are you "unhappy" with what other people choose to do with their lives? Is it affecting your life? Personally, I really enjoy Pretty Woman, it's just a lovely film that I can put on a relax. You don't like it, fine, but don't criticise others (which you have done) for their choices. We can't all like the same stuff, and I'm damn sure some films you like I could happily call a "POS", but unlike you, I respect others opinions

I was gonna let you *beep* me, but I got my rag, and I know how you hate a mess

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Go watch Steven Seagal movies.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

I'm a man, and I liked it. It's a love story. Also, I date young women.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

I agree that this film is dreadful- poor acting, dodgy premise, bad script- but I think that calling it the worst movie ever is perhaps hyperbolic unless you have already seen Coyote Ugly.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Julia Roberts was a Ho.

For some reason that rich man/whore movie trend continued in films like Honeymoon in Vegas and Mad Dog and Glory.

crazyhellboy, IMDb users can opt for email notification whenever someone responds to one of their posts no matter how old the thread is, and Miss October has opted for such notification.

crazyhellboy, if you think people who read old threads are "passive-aggressive OCD nutbags", then why are YOU posting here on a two year old thread?

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

@ bluzulu:

I don't think this film glamorizes prostitution at all. One of the prostitutes is murdered near the beginning. There's several scenes that portray it in its true and dangerous light. The whole point of the story by throwing Julia and Richard's characters into the mix is to create a modern day fairy tale, for adults. Remember at the time of the film's release this was rated R. Part of the basis of this is for the strong themes on prostitution. It's not really a kids film. Any adult watching this should have the capability to recognize this and just appreciate it for what it is a fun feel good movie to remind us to "keep dreaming"

BTW re: Julia's acting capabilities. I'll be the first to admit she's had her share of duds in her career but hey she's been acting quite consistently for a number of years. We all have hits and misses in our lives all the time, right? Pretty Woman is definitely one of her stand out performances for which she even earned her 2nd Academy Award nomination.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

I never watched this movie and thought "oh I wanna be a hooker so I can fall in love with a rich dude." Most movies would never happen in real life. We use movies as a chance to escape reality. They're for entertainment. and the message behind the movie is what women like. It's all about love. The portray the characters in a way that we forget Vivian is a hooker at all. She becomes a loveable character who we root for. and Edward can look past the fact that she is a hooker and love her anyways. All women want a love like that. We don't want to be hookers.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Wait. What's wrong with hookers? Aren't they people, too?

Or, have you already decreed that all sex workers are something less than respectable human beings?

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with hookers? I was responding to his message saying that it glamorized them. Which it didn't. The movie showed her life before Edward, her crappy apartment and her drug addicted roommate. Plus my statement is true. I never wanted to be a hooker after watching the movie. I don't think anyone grows up wanting to be a hookers. That doesn't mean that the ones that become hookers aren't good respectable people. To each their own.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Yes it does. It doesn't glamorize it in the sense that having sex for money is a great thing but it glamorizes it in the sense that it makes it seem like it's a great place to meet the love of your life. That yes you are down on your luck and have to have sex for money but the guy you are going down on could be the guy to save you. Could help you.

Which is ridiculous. Men don't respect prostitutes. Which is why so many of them are beaten and murdered. They don't look at prostitutes as their next wives. They look at them as things that the men use for release and gratification.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Yes, because I know so many women who became prostitutes to meet the rich man of their dreams after seeing Pretty Woman.

I was gonna let you *beep* me, but I got my rag, and I know how you hate a mess

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Well said, KRJ47. The anti-sex worker garbage on this board, often dressed up as "concern" just as it often is in real life, is nothing short of revolting.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

OH MY GOD, JUST SHUT THE *beep* UUUUUUUUP. Why does there always have to be some *beep* complaining on every board about how some movie is "the worst ever." Not every movie can be the worst. Is it acceptable to say Pretty Woman is bad? Yes. I don't like it either. But, it's not the "worst movie ever." Rant over.

The knack to flying lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Obviously it isn't the worst movie ever, since it was a big hit with audiences in 1990.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

It did not seem very realistic. Anyone with a brain can figure that out. I doubt prostitutes meet many men like Richard Gere. If they are lucky they do business with mediocre losers instead of sick losers. It was just a movie. It is light entertainment. Anyone who takes it too seriously is a moron. I have seen prostitutes working the streets. Most of them do not resemble Julia Roberts.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

It's a mediocre moving (6.8 IMD, 5.1 RT) with an absurd premise and message, which has no basis in reality, and treats prostitution light-heartedly.

But no, it's not even close to the worse movie ever. It isn't even Gere's or Roberts' worse movies.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

It's a MOVIE, not a documentary. Only a retard would confuse it with real life.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Sorry but you need to watch more movies! I watch many and have seen a lot worse. Movies are not real life. If you are trying to say that it is a bad role model then you could say that about every movie.

Why is it odd? Movies are not real life. People do not watch movies to see the norm. You'd go to the local pub or bar for that. I have no idea what you instituting but I'm going to guess you're saying it's a bad role model for kids? You can say that about every romance, action, horror, crime movie there is! Most people do watch movies for fun and entertainment. They don't take them so seriously.
As for worst movie, you need to watch much more :) As an avid movie watcher I can say there is a lot worse out there.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Totally agree! It just baffles me that people think this film is "romantic" The way it presents prostitution as something glamourous is very disturbing, and that it then presents the scenario where a rich man hires her and falls in love with her? It would have been more realistic if she pooped rainbows and had a pet unicorn!

But it is just part of the culture that encourages girls to think that their greatest ambition should be to be desired and loved by men, and that being beautiful is your meal-ticket. Would the film have worked if Cathy Bates played the lead? It is worrying that so many women like this film and are defending it!

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

People who hate on movies like Pretty Woman probably try to talk themselves out of enjoying almost everything else in life. You're not Moses. You're not God. You're not some supreme authority on what's moral or right. You're a person who can be just like the people in this movie if your circumstances were different. So, STFU and enjoy this particularly enjoyable piece of fiction. This is a beautiful, modern Cinderella story. Get over yourself.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

so modern day Cinderella..takes it up the farter for a couple of hundred bucks ?{its not really modern day it was over a quarter of a century ago}

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

The plot is bordering on the ridiculous but the chemistry between Roberts and Gere is electric and when combined with the witty script and soundtrack this film soars. For me this is the greatest romantic comedy since 'The Apartment'.

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

There is a real problem with this movie. It is a Disney (technically Touchstone) film, yet features a hooker as the heroine. What does that say about the moral decline of the USA?

Re: Perhaps the worst movie ever

Is this a joke?
