Although I love Casino, it's not on the level of Goodfellas for me. I think the cast is better in Goodfellas, along with the story, soundtrack and plot. I view Casino as a slight attempt to replay the magic of Goodfellas due to casting choices. Pesci's characters are just too similar to me as are De Niro's to a degree. It's defintely it's own movie, with seperate ideas but I wish Scorsese would have casted Casino a little differently. No offense meant as I've said I enjoy Casino a whole lot.

I always felt like there was something missing from Casino, I cant really put my finger on it.

I -enjoy- Casino more a lot of the photography is better and I frankly like watching DeNiro more in it.
But I think GF is the groundbreaking movie. Maybe if Casino had come out first it would've gotten the same acclaim.

I think Goodfellas had more authenticity to it and got to the point. Thee was something very unforgiving and grounded about it. At the end I thought "Wow."
I found Casino to be repetitive, and a bit overblown. To me, it was like instead of telling a real story, everyone was thinking "We're making a mob movie". It was entertaining but wasn't as intriguing. At the ed I thought. "OK."

I watched Casino before Goodfellas and I have to say that they were really similar to me. I liked Casino more too but maybe it's because I watched it first

I think CASINO was just Scorsese going back to the well one more time and trying to pull out another GOODFELLAS but not succeeding. To me CASINO is pretty inferior.

There a lot of us who like Casino better, we just are not as vocal as the Goodfellas lovers. That's just how it is, even if it doesn't make sense to those that love this movie.

I recall a similar (now deleted) discussion on the Casino board in which someone raised a point that liking one over the other might have something to do with what area of the country one is from. Goodfellas is more an East Coast movie, whereas Casino covers the Midwest (Chicago, KC) and West (Vegas, LA).

Goodfellas is a better film, but I slightly prefer Casino.
Liotta is kinda sleazy, nasty, and difficult to like (though the film does a great job of making us empathise with him) whereas De Niro in Casino is much more of a good guy trying to hold it all together - you like him more, and the love triangle with his wife and best friend is an easier plot to follow. Pesci's obligatory psychopath is explored more and given his own narration, and the Vegas imagery and camerawork is more seductive and glamorous, like a weird heaven that all goes to sht.

As in the mob's rule of Vegas all falls apart when the law steps in. The bosses get arrested, everyone gets assassinated, De Niro's wife dies, his best friend supposedly tries to kill him (then also dies, horribly) and Vegas turns into a soulless theme park version of its former self. De Niro is practically the only thing left standing, and even he retreats back to his betting days.

There both awesome movies. I have to place Goodfellas slightly ahead though. It's a masterpiece.

If you like tedious overbearing narration and bland characters, sure. I don't. Hence all Casino really did was make me crave Goodfellas.

I have to confess that when I first saw Goodfellas, I thought it was okay, but I didn't like it as much as my friends did. I didn't think it was that great at first. Then, when Casino came out and I saw the ads for it, my first thought was "Oh no, not another one!"
But then I saw Casino and was totally blown away that it prompted me to give Goodfellas another viewing.
I think I developed a new appreciation for Goodfellas mainly because of Casino, as strange as it may sound.

Both excellent. A great lazy weekend afternoon to me would be watching Godfather 1 & 2, then Goodfellas and Casino.
I can't say I really prefer Casino, sometimes I crave one and sometimes the other.

No. I like Casino, but for me it's missing something that makes Goodfellas addictive viewing. I'm not sure how to pinpoint it.
