Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns.

some of which I have to say: 'slap iron, you sonsabitches!' I don't believe movies that take place in the forties/fifties/sixties...like Hud, Bad Day at Black Rock..etc.. are NOT westerns in the truest sense. Call me a purist, ok. lol

Run, Hide or Fight!

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

I'd forgotten there was a sequel to The Man from Snowy River.

"He was a poet, a scholar and a mighty warrior."

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

I did too. I liked TMfSR and I guess the sequel was more of the same but I can't recall it at all.

The Searchers? Seriously?

Want three steaks?... My mistake. Four steaks.

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

...IMO, The Searchers is easily the best western of the 1950's...

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Really? I like Wagon Master and Rio Grande better. And that's just the Ford movies.

A lot of Peeps love "The Searchers" because they can rattle on about "racism".

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

I don't get the love for the film. The only character I liked was Scar, due to his complexity, despite making no attempt at hiding the fact he's a white man in redface. He's a mirror of Ethan. Other than that, they don't really dwell too much on the racism theme as they should. Once Upon A Time In The West and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly were far better films to me. Heck, Stagecoach, another Ford film, I feel was way better.

Want three steaks?... My mistake. Four steaks.

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

The point isn't that the Searchers is entirely about racism - its that it gives the critics a CHANCE to rattle on about racism.

Which is what they LOVE to do.

The West was about a lot more than "OMG! John Wayne's a bigot who doesn't like Injuns" or "That raciss John Wayne doesn't kill Debbie, he kisses her!"

But nice 'pushback'.

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

back in the day, not only was the Searchers one of the top westerns..it was also noted, by film critics, as one of the top ten films ever made. I've been baptised Reverend.

Run, Hide or Fight!

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

I am a sucker for Northwest Mounted Police..and the early Hopalong Cassidy movies with James Ellison and Gabby Hayes. Sucker for most John Wayne westerns except those Three Mesquiters stuff. Big Jake is really an above average western..with a great performance by Richard Boone as a heavy. The script was written by a couple that would write Dirty Harry.

Run, Hide or Fight!

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Years ago I told you how awful Northwest Mounted Police was and you laughed it off and told me good naturedly it was a guilty pleasure of yours.

Today I'll just say good for you for liking it.

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Yeah, I know...I can't help it. lol the script is laughable..made the Golden Turkey awards.. I know it's terrible but I like it. Even the Plainsman is bad..BUT, I like it. Same for Unconquered. It's either Gary Cooper or CB DeMille that I like and the combination of the two..is just golden for me. You know what they say, there are horses for courses..and that is my course! have a great day, glen. tut!

Hard to criticize any on your list..I am a westernophile..so I like all on your list. Will Penny is a real sleeper..love that movie. The little kid in Will Penny that played the son...was actually the director's son...and played Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite.

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

I like everyone of the movies on your list. Have you ever seen any of the early Hopalong Cassidy movies that costarred James Ellison..those are really excellent 60 minute oaters..if you can handle subtitles there is a great silent movie: The Iron Horse that's excellent..a John Ford silent. I also like Joel McCrea in Buffalo Bill. tut

Run, Hide or Fight!

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

No. I'm very partial to the 50's and I have a difficult time warming up to the older silent westerns and anything up to late 30's. I know I'm most likely missing out on a plethora of some pretty good flicks, but as it is, I'm more interested in completing my 50's western watchlist.

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

you certainly have a nice list thus far of excellent westerns. probably my favorite genre.

Run, Hide or Fight!

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Interesting list.

It was a toss-up whether I go in for diamonds or sing in the choir. The choir lost.

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Westerns which I have enjoyed:

The Ox-Bow Incident

Rachel and the Stranger

High Noon

The Bravados

Sergeant Rutledge

...and some others which I can't think of now.

The Bravados is such a tearjerker.

Jim Hutton (1934-79) & Ellery Queen =

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Hi MEQ2,

Nice list..Rachel and the Stranger very good movie..Sgt Rutledge is a real sleeper..very interesting film with an outstanding cast. Saw the Bravados in the theater..before I knew who Gregory Peck was at a Saturday matinee. The Bravados had a cool twist at the end.

Run, Hide or Fight!

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

I admit that I never guessed the ending of The Bravados. It should have been obvious to this mystery lover, but it wasn't. I was crying like a baby when I found out the conclusion. Terrific movie and fantastic acting by Gregory Peck...as always. He was really top-notch on the big screen.

Jim Hutton (1934-79) & Ellery Queen =

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Atticus made some really nice westerns. Yellow Sky, Duel in the Sun, and a very under rated: Only the Valiant, in his pre Finch days.

Run, Hide or Fight!

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Duel in the Sun

I wanted to like this one so much. I kept wondering how that teeny weeny little blanket Jennifer covered up with didn't just pop open..alas, it was really hard to get into despite the terrific cast...

totally agree...I love westerns and this was one on a grand scale..but, wow, it didn't work for me either.

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

Another very unique western is "The Great Silence" (El Grande Silencio) featuring Klaus Kinski...

The Covered Wagon (1923)

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

it is amazing how many of these westerns I/we all have seen. Not a dog in the lot. I enjoyed Hearts of the West too. A suggestion: Four Faces West...Joel McCrea vehicle; Westward the Women; and I LOVE all the early Hopalong Cassidy's..that include Jimmy Ellison and the early one's written by Doris Schroeder. tut

Run, Hide or Fight!

Re: Always kind of interesting to read a best of..in this case: Westerns

McCabe & Mrs. Miller. I like seeing the 'old west' in the cold.
