too bad this movie didn't go into more depth on the rising HIV / AIDS rate in amerikan prisons due to anal rape and sodomy.

The film had nothing to do with raising "social awareness" or "bringing up issues" or that stuff, so the HIV situation in prison would have turned the end of this into some sort of crappy lefty lesson.

I can not stand when people reduce works of art to their "social message", and I do not agree that everything is political and those who claim they are not political are just supporting the status quo. These people take the fun out of everything and they are normally self-righteous holier-than-thou types.

this film is ok, worth the watch so to speak, but with your suggestion it would have left me sour and pissed off that I wasted my time watching it.

My guess is that the "It happens." response is
probably pretty accurate. Incarcerated convicts
are not the most well-advocated substratum of
American society. Their boosters are not nearly
as numerous or obstreperous as many others (animal
righters, NRAers, all sides of abortion debaters
come to mind). A lot of people, rightly or wrongly,
feel that criminals get what they deserve.
Also, although I usually (but not always) qualify
as a "lefty", I agree with the guy above. Every
movie does not have to push or opinionate on
some social issue, even when the issue is shown
in the movie.

Yes, had THAT been the 'Topic' of this particular piece of Cinema, it would have turned into a Docu-Drama,.as it is,I can see that David Mamet has most likely never been in Jail, much less Prison. I have been Jailed a couple of times and was threatened with Anal Rape,til' I stood my ground and said, "Man if I look like a piece of chicken meat to you, than come on and get it!" And all 'backed-down'. Now perhaps the fact that I'm six-foot two,200+ lbs. saved me,.but the time I did was nothing like this film. So in that aspect, it's hard to judge. But I'd rather DIE than let anyone think I'd just Roll Over and offer up my Butt for whatever reason. So to me, that part of the script went South. Other than that, Mamet & Company have offered up a film that has Teeth and should be seen by everyone. Rock On!

Hey tomcat, since you've had experience in this department, was the scene where they walked Macy through the prison naked realistic? It just seemed sort of wrong to me. Maybe because when I see those reality prison docs on the Discovery Channel, the prisoners at least have underwear on when they're being transported from one area to the next. It just seemed a little over the top to have him marching naked with all the other prisoners throwing $hit at him

The reason that the medias never talk about rape and HIV in prisons is because 90% or so of the rapes are comitted by black men and the victims are white men most of the time. The PC liberals would rather sweep this issue under the rug rather than admit there is a problem.

actually from my understanding, most prison rapes were uni-racial or however you put it. most blacks raped in prison are raped by other blacks and most whites raped are from other whites. i mean, it's inevitably all different ways too but that was the reported general trend from inmate accounts.

You do realize that most larger prisons are actually segregated by race because of gang violence within the system.

Prison rape victims have actually heard similar. Sometimes they'll even tell you to find a prisoner that you'd have no problem sleeping with so that the others will leave you alone. So the writer did pretty good work in that respect.

Irrespective of whatever negative qualities Edmond had, one thing he demonstrated throughout the film is that he;d experienced a transformation, and had become a very assertive man, quite capable of at least attempting to violently defend his interests. That is one reason I believe he was actually a homosexual all along (I mean, c'mon, did you see that early scene with Rebecca Pidgeon in her underwear; no straight man would claim he "didn't find her attractive"). There is simply no way the new version of Edmond would have fellated that Black prisoner, if he'd been truly horrified by the prospect. The fact he offered so little resistance, and of course the nature of his future relationship with that prisoner, clearly seems to indicate he was always homosexual, even if he was, as I suspect, unaware of this fact.

I just dont think that AIDS education was what the film was intended to convey. It would have been a little too "after school special" I think.
