Star Trek: Deep Space Nine : OMG what was I missing!

OMG what was I missing!

When I thought I would hate this show because of Ferengi and Odo! After reading reviews I have started watching on Amazonthis show is incredible! Now I find Quark and Odo essential and enjoyable characters! I am still on just the first season and have enjoyed every episode so far! Reviews say it even gets bettercan hardly wait!

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Oh glad you discovered this show.
If you like the first season I bet you will love how this show and it's characters and plot develop.

I personally do not like most of the episodes of the first 2 seasons.
It gets better every season at least up to Season 5 - I love Seasons 4-7.
Best Trek there is.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

You haven't seen seasons 2 to 7 yet? How I envy youyou have so much amazing Trek to discover.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Season 1 is legit the weakest. If you like it, if you are down with series, you have some amazing experiences ahead. I think you will be one happy bunny.

Have u ever transcended space & time? Yes. No. Uh time, not space. No, I dont knw wht ur talkng abt

Re: OMG what was I missing!

You'll watch the whole series again and again. I've enjoyed it more after every re-viewing!

Re: OMG what was I missing!

It's a Great show but it get so Dark at times and the story so long that it's not the same experience as The Original or Next Generation. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing show just such a different tone and feel to the other series.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Me againtwo thirds through season 2! Just finished "Shadowplay"! What a brilliant episode with the people who did not know they were holograms! Odo was superb in it! Ren Auberjonois is a great actor

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Please write again in this thread when you are near the end of Season 3.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

DamnI am even starting to like the Cardassians!

Re: OMG what was I missing!

The Cardassians had a great start in the TNG episode The Wounded and they would have been an awesome addition to TNG as the main antagonist but that sort of fizzled. I'm glad DS9 picked up on the Cardassians.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

I wish the new movies would feature the Cardassians (or at least one) as an antagonist. Far more entertaining than the Klingons and the Romulans by far.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

I found that, for me personally, DS9 hit its 'rhythm' in Season 2-3 and started to gain traction in Season 4 onward.

The fact that there's continuity added a refreshing change to the Problem-of-the-week 'Comfortable Shoe' Star Trek likes to settle into.
With echoes of an over-arching plot developing, the series found a touch of Babylon 5 continuity intrigue.

That, plus some rather more, for sake of sounding cliched, Mature themed episodes, made for a refreshing look into Trek. Not overly pious, self reverential and more character driven, and with some occasional EXCELLENT episodes and acting, I feel it's the best Trek thus far.

"I Blame Television."

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Give us another update. There are a couple of episodes that are insanely good!

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Welcome to ds9. This show never got the attention and accolades is deserved.
This show is so good

Re: OMG what was I missing!

that's putting it mildly.. I'd say this is hands down the best ST series to date

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Glad you like it.

I watched the show during its first run. I need to get it on DVD at some point. Even back then, I didn't exactly look forward to Ferengi-centered episodes. I didn't care about the Nagus or Moogie or none of that. I didn't hate them, exactly, (except "Profit and Lace" wtf were they smoking with that one), I kindatolerated them. Though I did like "The Magnificent Ferengi," "House of Quark", and "Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places".

Sidenote: imagine if Quark and Grilka had a kid.

Odo eps however were a treat.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

just finished the 2 parter that started with Garek's shop being bombed! The thing I got most out of it is thisthe Defiant "is BITCHEN"!

Re: OMG what was I missing!

If you love season 1 then you in for a real treat. DS9 only gets better with each season, my favourite Star Trek series hands down.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

I didn't like it when it first aired, and stopped watching after the first season or so. I watched off and on in later seasons, but never really enjoyed the show all that much until I watched it all the way through a few years back. It definitely does get better and better, and the last few seasons are just about the best Trek TV there is, IMO (this coming from a huge TNG fan).

Re: OMG what was I missing!

OKwrapped up in season 4! Starting to like Gol Dukat!!! Hope he does not turn out bad in the endthis show sure plays with your mind and gets you "wrapped up" in the characters

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Noooo don't worry, Dukat will turn into a cotton candy and unicorn like hero .. seriously You can trust me Muhahahaha.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Oh my god just you wait until they get the Defiant! That's when it starts to get REALLY great.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

I also just started watching for the first time on Netflix. I am almost done with the first season. I'm not hooked yet. I really don't like several of the characters. Kira, the doctor and the Ferengi kid are some of the most unbearable characters I've seen.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Well, the good news is
Kira Mellows out.
The Ferengi grows up (in maturity, not height) and has some pretty decent moments.
The doctorwell, I hated him from beginning to end, but he has a few moments that are bearable

On November 6, 2012 god blessed Americaagain.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

First season is pretty bad (although not as bad as the first TNG season).

I like Bashir and he developes well.
Kira is OK although I never liked the actress.

Nog isn't a good character but at least in later seasons he is better than the ubearable other Ferengi character (only Quark is a good Ferengi character).

Re: OMG what was I missing!

I'm watching for the first time and have seen through episode 5. I'm glad to hear that it gets better I'll stick it out then. Right now, the characters seem very stiff and much of the acting, by a few of the leads, is terrible. "I'm *acting*!" I know that bad first seasons can lead into great series, but so far I've been wondering about all the high praise.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

What are your favorite shows?

And what Sci-Fi shows have you seen and how was your experience with them?

Re: OMG what was I missing!

In Sci-Fi/fantasy, right now my favorites are 12 Monkeys and Orphan Black. In the SF/F-"ish" category, Outlander (with time travel but no other SF elements) and Mr. Robot - though it may not really even fit the "ish" category. I loved all of those from the start. Other favorites: BSG (good all the way through), Doctor Who (which took several episodes for me to get into, but now I love it - various episodes aside). I like Supernatural too (didn't care for the 1st season; some seasons were great; sometimes it's just a habit). Farther back: Buffy and Highlander (both with first seasons that weren't the greatest but they got much better). Non-Sci-Fi favorites would be Justified, Rectify, The Hour, and most recently, The Musketeers. I like a few comedies too, but I wouldn't call them favorites.

Re: Star Trek in particular, I saw the original as a kid (I remember it having quite an impression) and saw several of the movies (love a few of them), but I haven't watched any of the other series other than possibly an episode here or there of TNG.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Thanx.
I think you will like the show. But it will take time and patience.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Ronald Moore and Ira Behr from BSG and Outlander were also main writers on Ds9.

Global Warming, it's a personal decision innit? - Nigel Tufnel

Re: OMG what was I missing!

If TwoMinutesToMidnight think those characters are bad he obviously hasn't seen Riker, the Plastic Doctor & her son, & the appalling Councillor in STNG, or Harry Kim & Neelix in Voyager. They are the pits, particularly Trois.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

I am near the end of season 3 now. It is getting better. Won't be my favorite ST series, but I'm glad I am finally watching it.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

We will see. It may still end up being your favorite st show.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Halfway through season 5 and it is really getting good. The overall quality and story is much better than the first couple seasons.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Lucky you, there is an episode in season 4, I'm not going to name it but you'll know when you see it that left me feeling empty and drained for a week after. I re-watched it a few months ago to see if it was a good as I remembered and still broke down at the end.

It only gets better. Enjoy!

Re: OMG what was I missing!

it has to be "Hard Time"

Re: OMG what was I missing!

It could also be The Visitor. Both fantastic episodes beautifully acted.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Deep into season 5just keeps getting better

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Final episode of S5 will melt your face.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

OH NO! Not againlol

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Just watched episode where Odo is nurturing baby Changeling! I am unsure if I want to continue watching this seriesI want EVERYONE to continue "Living Happily Ever After" and somehow I do not think that is going to happen. I like all of the characters so much that I do not want to be saddened. (already know about Jadzia and prepared for that)
I almost cried for Odo in this episode.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

Just watched 6 part beginning of season 6I am at a loss for words. Best "television" I have ever seen. Everyone here is right, this is the best of trek!

Season 6 imho easily has one of the best starts in television history. They do a lot of in-depth coverage of both the station and Defiant/Rotarran, and their crews.

The acting is superb, and the intense moment don't stop in the least.

Destroying an empire to win a war is no victory and ending a battle to save an empire is no defeat

Re: OMG what was I missing!

It's really cool to see ds9 gets more viewers, being a 20 year old show. You're making me want to rewatch it again. The dvd boxes for ds9 were some of the first i bought (the clunky, dark purple, weirdly shaped ones that are difficult to open), and yeah Pretty pricey. Worth every penny tho.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

That's great. And it only gets better. The first season while still good is the weakest season. Season 3 is when they start to build up major a storyline that spans throughout the rest of the series. Then Season 4 comes and cements itself as one of the greatest scifi series ever.

You're move, creep

Re: OMG what was I missing!

I don't like about this show is THE RATING! There are tons of episode just really standing at an 7 or so. For the uniform easily a 9 but standing at an 7.7.
And there are more great episodes in season 3-6 wich are just low rated. But there really entertaining and sadder than most other tv-shows. One of the most underrated sci-fi shows i've ever seen.

And that comes from a guy who's seen all of stargate, BSG, Star Trek TNG and VOY.

Re: OMG what was I missing!

DS9 is imo easily the best of these shows (although you have to consider that I have only seen the Stargate movie and the first Season of Stargate: Universe).

DS9 is very good (aside from the weak first 2 seasons although I like the Pilot very much and a couple of episodes here and there).

I recommend to you "Babylon 5" (imo even better than DS9 when you give it a chance, it too starts out rather weak but gets even better) "Farscape" and "Firefly".

Re: OMG what was I missing!

It's never to late to discover a show. I didn't watch it in it's original run either. It's awesome

Re: OMG what was I missing!

I am in Season 7 nowsoon will start final 9 part chapter! I wonder what the series would be like if the person who played Jadzia had stayed "on board"!
who knows
