The Big Bang Theory : OT - A Grammy Review
Re: OT - A Grammy Review
Honestly I thought 90% of the Grammy's was a trainwreck from the technical issues to the mostly boring performances. I mean. How do you have THAT many tech issues in one show?
I agree with you on Bruno and I'm surprised it has taken people this long to realize how good he is.
Tori Kelly is really underrated, hasn't blown up yet and someone she has performed at every major awards show the last 3-4 years; ,what is going to spark her career???
Overall I'm getting sick of how formulaic and predictable these award shows are, let's do something out of the ordinary for once.
And I'm a Beyonce fan, but the level of worship she gets in pop culture is venturing into unsettling. You'd think she was first singer to ever be pregnant.

That was 100% unacceptable. It's a MUSIC Awards show. Wouldn't the first thing you do is to make sure the STAGE is set up and working correctly?? Multiple people should be losing their jobs today.
I mean. How do you have THAT many tech issues one show?
Bruno never disappoints. I had heard of him prior to 2012, but hadn't really seen much of his stuff. (As my wife constantly tells me, I'm not hip - lol). But when I saw this performance in 2012, I was immediately sold and a big fan.

I'm with ya here. Even the stages are boring and recycled. They've had that circular stage in the middle for years now. And the small pit in front of the stage. And I really don't need CBS to pimp their Late Night host (in typical award show fashion). Was he funny? Maybe. Sometimes. But every moment he's on is a moment stolen from the point of the show - which is music.
Overall I'm getting sick of how formulaic and predictable these award shows are, let's do something out of the ordinary for once.
The way everyone gushed over her last night - ESPECIALLY Adele, was vomit inducing. It's almost like Adele had to apologize for winning - for fear some clown like Kanye would either rush onto the stage, or simply start a Twitter for about Queen Bee not winning.

Maybe security grabbed him before he could. Thankfully, someone in his entourage finally told him to shut his yapper.

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
I haven't watched an awards show of any kind in years. All they are is a bunch of overly self-important celebrities congratulating themselves and each other on how wonderful they are. Most of them come off as smug, pretentious douches. And don't get me started on the ones who think accepting an award is license to lecture the world on their political views.

I, for the most part, agree with you Goth. But The Grammys usually have a great amount of music. Unlike garbage like The Golden Globes.
Even so, we watched in on the DVR so we could FFwd through the speeches (and actually the award portions). I just wanted to see the performances.

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
Come to find out, my sister recorded it and we did the same thing tonight, watched the performances and a bit of the jibber-jabber in between. You were right, The Time was great and Bruno Mars was awesome. Enjoyed the BeeGees tribute and even got a kick out of Metallica and Lady Gaga - love how she got into character as a rocker chick. Underwhelmed by Katy Perry, and there was a bit too much new country. Pentatonix did a nice job on the Jackson Brothers' "ABC".

I adore awards shows, especially film ones. But I watched the Baftas last night on catch-up and thought I was drowning in champagne-socialist statements! I am very political but can we keep it out of my award shows please!

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
Same here. When you are at an event that has a specific purpose, just honor the event. Don't make it about what YOU personally think. It's the height of narcissism.
I am very political but can we keep it out of my award shows please!
The big excuse is "You have this big audience - you can reach so many people!". But they aren't there to be reached. They are their to honor and enjoy music, or film, or plays. You have a big crowd at a wedding. Should the Best Man give a lecture on abortion because he has a big captive audience? Or should a person giving a eulogy give an Immigration speech - just because there's a crowd?
Honor the event, don't make it about you, and that way EVERYONE can enjoy it. Don't hijack an audience just because you can.
Re: OT - A Grammy Review
Not enough politics in entertainment, imo.
Re: OT - A Grammy Review
Really? You like Katy Perry lecturing you on politics? Well, if you need more, just head down to the local bar and ask the guitar player or drummer their geo-political views. Because essentially that's what you do when you listen to celebrities. The only difference is the guy at the bar doesn't live in a bubble, and probably has a more intelligent view on world events than celebs do.
Not enough politics in entertainment, imo
If your comment was sarcasm, I apologize in advance. I'm hoping it was.
Re: OT - A Grammy Review
She makes some good music but she's not a "queen" and certainly should not be bowed to on any stage whether that was supposed to be artistic license or not. It's CREEPY as F$%&.

At this point she HAS to be playing into those rumors with the imagery she's using in her performances.

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
Bruno continues to impress. I think his Super Bowl 49 halftime show a few years ago opened a lot of eyes. The guy has a very fun energy. He's on top of his game and was perfect for the Prince tribute.
Gaga and Metallica was interesting because of how they handled the technical difficulties.
But that combination seemed forced. Fake mosh pits are so wrong.
Not sure what that Neil Diamond skit was aboutbut it got my GF singing. Soit worked? And Neil seemed to be having fun.
Adele? Her 2012 Rolling in the Deep Grammy performance was astounding. If anyone still reading is a fan of hers and has yet to see her live performance from the Royal Albert Hall seek it out. And forget what happened last night. And last year.
When I was a kid learning about music the moniker 'Queen' referred to Aretha Franklin. I'm sad to hear it used elsewhere.
Grammy show score? D Looked like something from the 90's.

All you need to know about the Grammys:
Adele, Beyonce, Eminem, and Lil' Wayne EACH have more grammys than The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Kinks COMBINED! (not including lifetime achievement Grammys which are not won, but awarded).

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
I understand your point but you shouldn't include Eminem in it.
Are you trying to imply Eminem is not deserving of the awards he's won? No one who knows anything about hip hop would disparage his career.
Beyonce as a performer is great but I agree her music is no were close to the level of the band's / artists you've listed.

are you saying Eminem is so much better than the groups I named, he deserves to get far more Grammys than they ever did?

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
That's not how awards work. There are great actors with zero Oscars/nomination and average actors with multiple Oscars/nomination. Wining awards is more about climate ,timing and popularity in a certain era than anything else, and certain categories are easier to win awards in.
One person having more than another you feel is more deserving doesn't invalidate the first person's award , you just have to account for all the variables I mentioned.

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
Climate I'll definitely agree upon. The Beatles, Stones, etc. were the musical counterculture when they came out. The Grammys were the establishment stuck in the past.
Pat Boone being more popular at that time than Little Richard singing Tutti Fruitti is a pretty good indicator of the attitude of the public back then.

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
Otter, the reason for that is because since the late 70's and early 80's, The Grammys have clearly focused on Pop and R&B - especially for Song and Record of the Year. Plus, there are WAY more awards given out these days, so it's very easy to rack up multiple Grammy wins. This year there were EIGHTY FOUR categories. Forty years ago there were about 45. I took the liberty of not counting CLASSICAL MUSIC awards that the Grammy's no longer honor. They have vastly expanded R&B and Rap awards.
The Grammy's only started in 1958, and during the height of The Beatles and The Who, the Grammys were still tilted towards music from Sinatra and Streisand, with a heavy focus on Classical Music.
You just can't compare total Grammy's for groups from the 60's and early 70's to what the Grammys are today. It's not a fair comparison. And it's one of the reason the Lifetime Award was created, to honor those groups from an era where the Grammys didn't focus on their genre the way the do today.

Re: OT - A Grammy Review
All awards are. The way you get nominated in the first place is based not only on quality, but popularity. But you don't seem to want to address the reasons for your complaint. There actually are some other than 'popularity'. The bands and acts you listed are fabulous. But there's a reason why what many feel to be some of the greatest groups of all time have fewer Grammys. Ignoring those reasons is obtuse.
Grammys are a popularity contest.

On the downside, I've never really heard anyone adequately cover The Bee Gees, and after last night, I still haven't. Andra Day did okay with Night Fever, but the rest of them fell far short. The speed and tempo of the lyrics seemed to much for Demi Lovato and Tori Kelly, and they seemed like they were just trying to keep up.
Overall, a decent night of music, and since we used the DVR, we could skip through sections of the show we didn't want to hear. And I still got to see The Walking Dead!
